Impressive specimen! Even the colors shown in the picture seem to becoming more exceptable now. Not the Fisher Price looking 4290 one as before IMO. :captain:

I agree! This new one looks to have gone back to the cannons that look like cannons, not the hidden changable ones! :woohoo: This looks closer to the original Playmobil ships of yesteryears!

Although I only know them from pics (so maybe in the flesh they're much different), why is the 5135 "so much better" then the 4290  ::)?
The 5135 has that huge skull & bones on the sail, which besides being totally inaccurate kills any attempt to transform it in a regular navy ship (unless you get a new sail), also has those fake cannons below deck that from what I understood the general consensus was that they were lame.
So why is this one so much better?

Post by: Hadoque on February 23, 2011, 21:08:38
Most parts - and thus masts and sails - should be interchangeable between the 5135 and the 3940 (US 3286) as the same moulds are used (with perhaps a few small modifications).
Case rests with the (fake) cannons below deck of course, of which we don't yet know if they are removeable or not. I hope so, I'd like to install cannons like on the 3940.
So I think I'll really like the 5135 (mostly nice colours), as much as the 3940 (except if the 5135's cannons look too fake).

So why is this one so much better?

Well, the 4290's hull is red...doesn't look that good. A hull should be brown, darkgrey or black. The bow-ornament on the 4290 is plain ugly. The 4290 has no guns below deck, it has 4 cannon-barrels (the gun-carriages are fakes and are part of the deck-mould) on the frontdeck (you can pull switches to hide these guns) and a rotating cannon at the aft-deck. So the gun-layout isn't very succesfull either...
The 3940 (US N° 3286) and the 5135 look much more realistic. Ok, there's a skull on one of the 5135's sails but you can just replace that one with another sail.

Hadoque, in all honesty (except for the silly sail and the gun ports below deck), I do think the 5135 looks better, but that's the impression I have from the pics only.
Title: Re: who likes the new ship?
Post by: Hadoque on February 23, 2011, 23:35:38
If you want to know the differences, you'll have to buy at least one of each (3940 / 4290 / 5135)  ;D
Lame cannons below deck are still better then no cannons below deck at all, so most people already prefer the 5135 over the 4290. When these lame fakes can be exchanged for the real ones like on the 3940, well even better! But yes, to really know we"ll have to wait to see the ship in the flesh..ehrr...wood..doh.. plastic.  ;)

Of course I want to get a ship, but I don't want to open another can of worms :0. I'm probably getting into the firemen theme, which I DEFINITIVELY wasn't supposed to even look at, so at this stage I need another theme as much as I need another hole in my head.

My main problem with it is that I want to convert it to a navy ship...
So no skull and crossbones there. ;)

well primuspilus, if you take a look at the fantastic (just kidding) thread "all the pirate ships playmobil ever made" - http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=4639.0 - you will understand the "skull" problem.  :hmm:

you have a skull in the 5775 schooner, in the 3619/3133 schooner, in the 3174/5733/3900/7581 schooner, in the 5869 schooner, in the 5810 schooner, in the 5778 ship, in the 5780 raft, in the 4331 mini-set and now in the 5135 ship.
if you put them all together you get a tremendous amount of "skulls".
this undermines a bit their individuality as different sets - in a semiotics view - diminishing what makes them unique.  8}

the 3940 has 2 different square sails on both masts.
maybe this is not the case with the 5135 and all we have to do is to get a spare "skull-less" sail to replace the "skull" one.  ???

having sais all this, i must say i like this new ship.
i guess my "love" will be a little less when i get it and "feel" the fake cannons, and the absense of string "sheets".
until then i am rather happy with the return of "normal" colors
  :)

I'm very pleased that Playmobil is coming out with a new version of their large ship.  I don't like the pirate sail, but that can be easily changed, and I'm hoping the fake cannon can be easily changed too.  Those things aside, I prefer the older version of this ship due to the colors, although seeing this new one in person may change my mind. :arrr:
Title: Re: who likes the new ship?
Post by: berkwit on February 24, 2011, 07:52:36
I like all the ships, I don't really mind skulls, hidden cannons or red hulls etc. because they're toys, and I don't have any need for perfect historical accuracy here. ;) I'm still hoping to get the 4290, the only reason why I haven't bought it when it was released was lack of money and the need to make choices (like paying rent and getting decent food on the table). If I can still get it, I'll buy it before I'll buy the 5135.

re the red colours of the hull: I remember a discussion on Playmoboard about the shields of the vikings, people were complaining about the bright colours because those shields were made of wood. In fact the Danes and Norse painted their shields in bright colours for several reasons, so the perceived historical accuracy of the wood-coloured-shield-people was in fact mistaken. So my pirates paint their ships in bright colours too.  ;)

The only thing I never really liked was the big bertha, although it was the best weapon to actually knock over klickies with until the new bolt-shooting cannons. The older ones (especially those with the safety balls) simply weren't powerful enough.

I like it, but not any more or less really than its predescesor.  To me it's just a recolour, and I like the fake cannons mostly because of added seaworthy stability and the fact that you don't have to spend gobbs of money to arm the ship since it come pre-armed.

I honestly think this is the best skull print on a sail I've seen of all the ships so far.  The other ones look more cartoony.  But if you don't like the skull, easy fix: get a set of spares and use the skull-less one.

As far as the stringless sheets....even on the 4290, I don't get what the big deal is:  if you want real string rigging, just go buy some string and rig it!  It's real easy! lol

You can add me to the "love it" group. I'll be buying the 5135 even though I already have 2 3286's (one Pirate crewed and one Blue-coat crewed).

I don't mind the skull and cross bones on the sail either but I admit if I intended it as a Navy ship I would change it out.

As for the fake cannon I agree with Black Pearl that it is nice to have the ship fully "armed" without having to spend 30$ extra. We never fire the below deck cannon on the 3286 anyway so it is not a big deal to me.

I am very excited, that ship looks that it is an improved 3940, I really don't like that skull on the sail but I am sure that it can be changed because all thinks fits with each other.

That's the problem I have with it too: it looks fake.
If there is  a way to get a plain sail to substitute the skull one then that ship would look great.

If I remember correctly, the main sails on front and aft mast weren't the same size on the 3940; one being just slightly larger in length then the other. (all my sails are in a box for protection at the moment, I should search it and check to be sure)
But the difference is small, you can exchange them. Depending wich one you exchange, it will look like it has either a bit more or a bit less "wind blowing" at it.
Should be the same with the 5135 I guess, so getting another front sail without skull to put on the aft mast should work.

I'm looking at my sails right now....I think you're right that one of them is slightly bigger than the other...but it doesn't matter.  They're still interchangeable.  I know cuz I tried.  Not really sure which one goes in front or back.  So the worst thing that'll happen with the new sail is you have two of the same one, and they'll be EXACTLY the same size.  You won't be able to tell.

Btw, like rigging, sails are EASY to replace with your own material.  Just cut it out of your favourite material, and attach just like the stock ones.

Ι think that 3940 was the closest to reliality ship of playmobil, also 4290 was the ship with the better position for canon.those pairs of canon can hit easy the deck of every other playmobil ship, also the rear canon is excellent. The new ship is beautifull with upgade features of 3940 but i'm correct there is not rear canon and those four lower canon are real or fake?I'm sure that playmobil can do better.I do not care about the sails. You can always customize them.

Yeah, we've determined the 4 lower cannons are fake.  Interesting you mention no rear cannons....most ships of this day would have what we call "chasers" : rear-facing cannons that protrude from the stern of the ship, made specifically to shoot backwards at any pursuing ships.  You are correct; the 3940 does not have any chaser rear-facing cannons.  That would be a cool modification to make, not to mention forward cannons at the bow.  FYI, my Black Pearl custom can accommodate 2 forward facing cannons at the bow, just for fun. :D

I like the ship and will add as many as possible to our fleet. Along with changing out some of the ships fake cannons & skull sail I will change the "Ship bow decorative carving" to the 30 21 8830 golden colored one. I think all the gold trim leading up to the bow should end in gold and not red. Simple change but I think it will look better. The shield on the stern should be bellow deck in the treasure hold, again simple fix.

I like the new colored ship and am somewhat glad they brought it back. I would have preferred they made a whole new ship and never again consult the architect who was associated with the 4290 but this will do.

For some reason the Klicky on the loading platform looks like a kid in green shorts with no shoes?

Also one of the most annoying things Playmobil does is in regards to the Skull and bones. From what I have read each band of pirates would have his own unique design. On one ship the flags, sails, hats & other items should all bear the same design. On this ship, and many others the skull design on the sail is completely different than the one on the flag & possible on the hats. They should all match  :hmm: Not always a simple fix as there is not always matching flags, sails & hats.

No, but there are some I have none of  :P

To be honest if you watch trends closely enough you can pick up sets like the 3940 very cheaply. I think I pick up the 5 I have for under $40 used, some even for $20-ish. I did not even want the 4290 but ended up buying 2 sealed store displays in a large lot from a closing local store.

No seriously, even if it said Ark, it wouldn't be so bad, though it would still not be Biblically accurate (the boat-shaped ark isn't accurate, anyway) but to say Noah on it is just crazy!
