why were there 2 versions of these crosses? (I assume the green one came later?)
can I assume the red crosses are rarer?
(so if I had to wipe off the crosses or re-spray the cap completely, like into white for one of my customs :P, I'll at least do that on the less rare version ;)

I think there are two possible answers.
The first is that the red cross with four equal arms is a registered sign of the Red Cross and they do not allow it to be used for advertising or other purposes.
The second is that the green cross in recent years has replaced the red cross as a medical sign, for example on pharmacies.
A third answer is that both the above led to the change.

thanks playmofire-Gordon!
until we know for sure, I will preserve the red-cross version as long as I can (not that I'm happy to repray the green crosses either ;) )
