Title: Wolf Knights....
Post by: Wolf Knight on June 09, 2010, 20:28:36
Hi all,

I've done a search of the review board and found no thread for the latest wolf knights... sets 4807 to 4812.

(http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/6/6/9/baldthar/f_grpn4kgxm_3d54126.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

I have to admit I am a bit puzzled with these knights...they are totaly on their own, nothing like them was ever produced by playmobil!!

They each have a different wolf as a companion..(apart from the knight who controls the catapult)..(http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/6/6/9/baldthar/f_grpn4khtm_4ea5d23.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

(http://img38.imagefra.me/img/img38/6/6/9/baldthar/f_grpn4khsm_d109b61.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

They each have a big piece of a wolf's head puzzle that when joined together, they make a nice throwing...rock, should i say?

(http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/6/6/9/baldthar/f_grpn4kh1m_9a22965.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

Their armor has a bronze colour, which if mistreated, rubbed a lot or accidentaly hit, its wearing off (not in a significant amount but the wear off is there..) especially around the edges...the effect is not bad as it makes the armor look damaged from battle!!! ---- I am attaching two pictures of two shields that have marks like that... the one on the handle, the second one-the round one-around its edges...insignificant marks really but can be found on the armor after playing...

wolf knight 4808...

(http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/6/6/9/baldthar/f_grpn4lalm_5514246.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

I like this one the best I think because of the shield carried by archers (can you please remind me the name of that shield?) and because of the dragon helmet !!! What does the dragon helmet has to do with a wolf knight you'll ask me.... who knows? playmobil works in mysterious ways!!!

wolf knight 4810...he carries the banner...and has the best coloured wolf in my opinion... a shade of rat-blue

and last, but not least, wolf knight 4812...the one with the catapult...

(http://img38.imagefra.me/img/img38/6/6/9/baldthar/f_grpn4lakm_11d56fd.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

I cannot seem able able to find the reins of the catapult...I'll look for them tomorrow...its a set or reins to which the wolves are tide to drag the catapult....the armor the wolves are wearing has more uses than defence...

What I found most intriguing about these knights is the bronze colour...I have bought about ten of each in order to make knights with only bronze colour. Thus, my avatar!!! Only problem, none of them has bronze coloured hands...

More custom wolf knight's on the custom board!!!! Hope you Enjoyed the regular ones!!! Oh, and I owe you a picture with the wolfs dragging the catapult... so stay tuned!!!

Thanks a lot for showing these detailed pictures WK. They indeed look like a bunch of great Klickies to have with nice equipment and unique armor. Although it looks like the helmet on 4808 wasn't Bronzed. Thats really weird if it is so.

The wolves very nice to especially them each having a different color.

I have these also.  I like the bronze  colors.  I have four catapults and about 30 to 40 wolf knights right now.  I have one set of bronze knights to lead the others into battle.  I don't use the dragon helmet because it just doesn't fit in my opinion.

Aren't they great?

Neither does the bull horned one I think...that is why they need, and offer the opportunity for, extensive customisation!!!!  ;D ;D

Thanks for the review, Panos.  It's not my theme but I like to keep up with what's happening elsewhere in the world of Playmobil.

Like you, I ask the question, "Why did Playmobil introduce them?"  Maybe, testing the idea of fantasy themes?  Who knows?

The sets do show how Playmobil have moved away from authentic detail in their knights.  The long shield first appeared with the crossbowman and with him it is right but I'm not too sure about an archer with the more traditional bow having a shield like this, but I may be wrong.  Similarly, with the original catapult set it was men-at-arms with it, not armoured knights.

Glad to know you enjoyed them Gordon!!! Its true about the shield...maybe if this knight held a crossbow... thats an idea!!! Thank you !!!

Did these knights come out in Germany before Dragonland? Maybe they were an experiment....

I don't exactly know why they did the Wolf Knights perse, but I think they were looking for two series where with more syergy then a normal themed series.

Both when buying the 4813 - 4817 mermaids and the Wolf Knights the idea is that you have other smaller sets to buy which SHOULD be combined. A great way to make sure that kids are more insistant on getting the others as well. This might have been an experiment and depending on the succes, we might see more of such "linked" products in the future.

Why they went with the respective themes I don't know. No complaining though as the Wolf Knights look awesome, and there are some really useful parts with the mermaids :-)

The only problem is, how to categorise these wolf knights...are they good? are they bad? to me they remain a mystery...I think I will categorise them as a balancing force between good and evil!!! Like the green dragons, the unicorn knights and the double axe dark knights!!!

Oh and yes, I have also bought a few mermaids as their parts provide excellent additions to customisation!!!

These look great Panos, Like Gordon, they are not a theme I collect but it is nice too see something close up such as these that I would not normally look at :)

I also love the different coloured stones that fit together

I have bought about 10 5888 blister packs from target. They have these listed as Iron Knights. There is clearly a wolf knight with horse holding the banner. I was curious where they came up with Iron Knights.

Thanks for the excellent review and set of pictures Panos!

I too have several sets of these Wolf Knights, but haven't played with them enough to notice any wearing of the bronze finish. I thought the bronze was integral to the moulding, but if it's an additional finish there's presumably a new production process. I'll have to examine mine carefully and see if they exhibit wear, maybe I should carry one in my pocket for a week or so to see how much rubbing it requires to "age" them.

We haven't had a proper review of these Wolf Knights before, but they have been discussed several times in the News forum. The Iron Knights (sets 5886 through 5889) that Elric mentions actually came out in the US before the Wolf Knights were available (though we were waiting impatiently for them), and I also have several sets of those. The Iron Knights copied the Wolf Knights almost exactly in design, but having no catapult in the blister packs, the one box set 5889 in the series contained ALL the colored stones with the catapult and a couple of wolves (but no means for them to pull the catapult), and a seventh Iron Knight compared to the six Wolf Knights.

To my mind, Playmobil have been moving dangerously away from the Specials in recent years, and many stores do not carry them at all. This year there aren't yet ANY new specials in some countries, only a re-release of some old ones (welcome though they may be in  their own right) which still hadn't reached the shelves by June.  Introductory pocket-money priced sets can spark a bigger parental outlay at Birthday and Christmas, but are necessary to get people with smaller budgets (frequently children) to invest in some Playmobil on a more regular basis. I think Playmobil should have many more of these smaller sets (in $5 to $10 price range) to keep children interested in new releases throughout the year, and visitng the Playmobil aisle (or in the US the tiny Playmobil 2' shelf section).

The two figure blister packs (and the carry boxes) have been an attempt to tap that market, and also to instil the idea of collecting, so that Playmobil may benefit from the huge market devoted to trading cards, Pokemon etc. Sets 5888 and 5889 sport a yellow star with the motto Collect them all! but unfortunately don't explain what all encompasses. This may be deliberate, allowing them to expand the range of all indefinitely.

As previously mentioned, the Mermaids followed the same "collecting" principle with a more feminine angle, and had their blister equivalents (5882-5885), and for people who don't want to buy the sets individually there are sets 5001 (Wolf Knights) and 5002 (Mermaids) that combined the subsets, though these have not yet been made available in all countries.

Can we expect more themed collections? Maybe Pirates or Policemen? I hope so. My childhood collection of Playmobil ran more along these lines, with just a handful of characters to play out my stories, without the hundreds of background extras and dozens of buildings that I can now afford.

The archer's shield is called a Pavis shield.

The back of the Wolf Knight Packaging clearly defines what all is. The usual contents picture has moved to the side and is alot smaller. And the back features a picture of what you have when you have collected "ALL"

The Iron Knight packaging is different, and doesn't show this, and it's the Iron Knight packaging I'm talking about.

Check out the pictures on Playmodb of sets 5888 and 5889.

I went to playmo DB and check the Iron Knights...they are wearing grey armor right? Thus, I can speculate, the name Iron Knights!!! Nice sets...

@ Martin!!! Thank you for your extensive feedback and information!!!  Somehow I knew you'd be the one to remind me the Pavis shield!! Its a good technic to carry the klicky around all day just to check the wearing off!! I was thinking of avoiding contact with them in order to keep the colour unspoiled but, I need to play and customise them!!!

I agree with your thinking of introducing themes such as these so it will be easier for children to get...and a knight nowadays is not that fascinating to a kid like it was when we were younger...so the bronze colour might be a way to attract younger buyers...

So, if this is a beggining of themed collections, let them come our way!!!!  ;D ;D ;D

Well, I am trying to create the Bronze Knights!! Each wolf knight has only half parts of him in bronze...the torso, the legs...armor is common to all...but for good combinations of total bronze you need all and in quantities!!! ;D ;D ;D

Remember the shop that gave me the dragon land castle as a present? Its closing down and they are selling all their playmobil in half price!!! I got myself 11 wolf knight yesterbay for only 45 euros!!!!

---edit----

on seond theought...they will still be Wolf Knights...on this time their armor will be totally bronze!!!

I like these Knights... to a point.
I think I would like them more if they offered more variety,
Or if these were all the leaders of a nation (or seperate nations)
And there were simpler figures to act as militia. :)

Other then that I like them fine! ;)

Cool pics WolfKnight, I can't wait to see your Bronze Knights! :o

So far I have 47 of sets 5888 and I am going out tomorrow to get the last 4 that I want to get for a total of 51 sets.

As there are 2 kllickies in each set, this will give me 2x 20 each of mounted knights and 2x 30 klicky each of foot units with 1 over-all mounted leader.  I might go as high as 52 sets to have a standard bearer with the Leader.  All together, it gives me an army of 104.

The extra 10 horses will go to other knights.  I wish Target and Toys R Us would carry more of the knight, Roman and Egyptian sets.

Wow, that is a substantial investment in one set! I got 6-10 of the 5888, I rarely have more than 20 or so knights of one type, usually less.

It's always worth asking at TRU or Target if they have any more sets in the back room. I suspect they only put a few on the shelf at any one time, but would be happy to fetch more if you're buying them.

Yesterday I went to all the Target stores around my neighborhood, today I went to all the Toys R Us stores... no 5888.  I will try again Wednesday, I was told they get a re-stock on Tuesday's and Thursday's.  If no one has them by the time I get back next week, I will need to order the last 5 sets from Playmobil.

I did get 2 copies of set 5889 Wolf Knights with wolves.
