PBR Riverine
« on: February 08, 2016, 19:52:49 »
Hi again everyone!

New project, having a 3941 Rescue boat as a basis for the "Apocalypse Now" PBR Riverine boat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrol_Boat,_River

As always, this is a step by step making of. Hope you like it!

Some cutting and cardboard mockups for starters....

Nope... that's too big for the front turret..

I'll have to close the stern

That's more like it..

You'll be able to make a sweet diorama with lots of VC wearing that Vietnamese conical hat from the new Fi?ures series.

A legendary movie, looking forward to the result of your work.  :)
I´m for the minimum use of non-playmo parts (unless there is no other way, and I must confess I adopted some F-22 jets which are a totally different brand), so I hope once finished the patrolboat will look very Playmo-like.

Resistance is futile, you will be boarded!

Thanks for your kind comments...

@macruran
Yep! Those hats are great! At the same time, i'm building a vietnamese boat for that purpose

@hadoque
I'm also for the use of playmobil parts wherever possible. Although, flat plastic and weapons are a problem, that's why i'm recycling old cd cases and some ugly chinese toys for the radar and front turret machinegun. The design is what's important (and difficult), I think: finding the right balance between a nice looking adaptation of the original vehicle vs a playmo look.

The decisions, like changing the wheel to the left or the materials used (all plastic vs metal, wood), is what i'm talking about. I guess my style falls in between a playmobil toy and a detailed scale model, always gravitating towards the first.

There's some other projects (1900's-ish steam boat and mississipi steamer) i'll be posting soon, where i used 98% playmo plastic instead.

That said... some progress is made!

Original vs custom comparison

Had to shorten the front gun, waaaaay too big

Front turret well is glued (messy glue gun job  :hmm:)

Soldering the canvas support

Rear railing and engine compartment open/closed lid.

Bitts, airlift tabs, radar and antennas in place...

I adapted a playmo firefighter's hose lever to the instruments panel. Think it turned out pretty good!

The cabin is almost ready!

Wow.

The lever on the instruments panel looks really good!

Amazing how that comes along. Thank you so much for posting the "making of".. I just find the hairless klickys somewhat disturbing...

I am enjoying the progress pictures of this build!  Have you ever looked into using the plastic styrene sheeting (comes in a variety of thicknesses and even some textures) for use?  I used to use it when I was scratch-building and customizing Code 3 Fire Trucks and Ambulances.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one :)

Thanks for your comments

The hairless klicky is one i have around for scale tests heheh

I build with recycled plastic because it's CHEAP. Styrene is priced like platinum over here, it would be of great help though. Perhaps i don't like it because it's too flimsy for my taste, I prefer abs and hard plastics wherever possible...

And yep, I enjoy taking pics of the process very much, it helps a lot seeing the images during the building for detecting mistakes and design errors.
