Title: State Fair Diorama
Post by: bonniebeth on December 14, 2014, 18:29:12
This is a project I've been wanting to do for a long time, since even before we first saw pictures of the fair theme. Most of this has been set up since late August, waiting to add the last couple of rides to it. But here it is, finally! There are a lot of custom carnival games in here, as well as livestock areas and such. I have also set up lighting for it, and tonight after dark I plan to light it all up and take video of how it looks at night. But I couldn't wait to post the pictures, so here they are!

Nice fair :)

Great creativity for the rides - and you did capture the weirdness of the booth people!

Ah, and what a nice variety of klickys   (saw the vsk kid on the swing :) )

And grandma finding her inner child!  ;D

I didn't like the savages with the sheep (well done though), and the animals as prizes look.. creepy - maybe because we KNOW they're supposed to be animals? Wait. They're all plastic... Uhm.

Wow it looks beautifull! so many details! I love how you displayed the prizes next to the basketball game and other games, the dunking book is brilliant too!
You really captured the setting very well!

Happy grandma is great too!

Great diorama Bonnie! Love the games, some clever custom work there. The pizza cart is a great one too! Maybe Mrs Santa's pizza parlor will expand with a cart for summer time sales. Hmmm it's a thought.

Thanks so much everyone. I've really had fun with this one. Well-spotted on the special klicky, Tahra.

Anyway, here is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XkVU8F7shA&feature=youtu.be

I also took a few still shots with the lights on. I don't have the skill to make them look great, but here they are:

Wow, brilliant ideas on the game booths. They really are just like you presented. The floating barrels in a kiddie pool, perfect. The basketball game, so simple but spot on. The target shooting, great use of a strange part. The balloon pop, western arrows, never would have thought of that solution.

Then all the animals, country rockers and food contests, looks just like our county fairs.

Great dio bb.

I think your carnies need to be a bit weirder though, ours seem to always be way out there.

Also more fences around the rides to give separation and a sence of safety

Thank you so much, everyone.

Yeah, we have reeeeally creepy carnies at our fairs too. It makes you a bit afraid to be there after dark. In fact, this year Chris and I were stalked in the parking lot on the way to our car, and had to loop back around to the entrance and wait for thicker crowds before we tried it again. We reported it to the police on our way out. But it occurred to us that in order for a person to think he could escape after mugging someone in the parking lot, he must have actually worked there.

Ras, you're right, I was thinking we need fences around the rides. It's hard to make fences look right in a dio, though. They don't blend in like they do in real life. After all my zoo dios, I need a break from fooling with fences.

Even without the fences it looks great! I think the lighting is what makes it so awesome. Did you use little Christmas lights for it?

Makes me want to try something like this after I complete my zoo (which at the present rate will be next year since I want the new zoo parts and animals for the zoo and the outdoor adventure.) Plus I still need to get the rest of the Amusement Theme items

They were actually just some tiny light strings that I found at a party store, and then the lights inside the buildings are submersible lights meant for flower arranging. Both kinds came from the wedding decor section. I may do a how-to topic and show some pictures of them later.

As soon as I can get the alpacas, I think I'm going to set up my zoo again. I've added so many exhibits, I'm kind of dying to set it all up.

Wonderful!  The game booths with all their hung up prizes are my favourite parts.

Very clever to take the photo of the boat swings in action.  I totally failed trying to take a photo like that.

The ferris wheel close-ups are lovely.

The artist with his purple checked cap, though - I do like that cap.  Is it from an artist Special set?  Or from where?  I'd love one of those caps.

Well, there's kind of a flimsy fence between you and most of the animals. Only the goats and sheep are actually walking around in the same enclosure with you. Camels can be kind of dangerous, but most of them are pretty docile.

You know, I honestly have NO idea where he is from. I was trying to remember that myself. Probably some victorian set. Anyone know?

He's from 5510 The Victorian Family. He also appears in 5955 (although the shoe covers were added as the Klicky does not have them in either set)

I remember being butted by a sheep when I was little - but most of the time we got along   - I used to take him bread, on my way to school with my grandpa. And on a later school there was a goat near by (back then, kids were not locked up behind high fences - that actually changed the next year on that school :( ) and I used to share my food with her - she'd eat ANYTHING though - had to be careful!

Must be AWESOME to pet a (docile!) camel :)  (they make many appearances in the Amazing Race (my guilty pleasure), and they are usually.... not .... easy.  ::) )

Looking forward to you new zoo!

Ah.. the hats I have repeats of are the grey one (from the GORGEOUS torso gardener), not that one.

There can be weird choices in fair petting zoos, must be decisions made by the carnies. Ours had a deer, kangaroo, and many animals I had no idea what they were. Keeping baby wild animals who were bottle fed do not make them docile pets. No camels yet, give them a few more years and I bet a baby elephant will be in there. Alpacas and lamas in our area are quite nasty, biting and spitting, must be the mountain lions stalking them that make them nervous

He's from 5510 The Victorian Family. He also appears in 5955 (although the shoe covers were added as the Klicky does not have them in either set)

Ah yes, must be from the FAO schwartz set. I wonder where I got the shoe covers. I sure don't remember customizing this guy. 8}

Wow, this is fantastic Bonnie.  :inlove:
I love so much of it but especially the game booths, they are so cleverly done.  :wow:
The whole diorama really captures the feel of a fair.

Thank you leefert, regarding the purple cap.  I've just looked up the part number, but it seems that the cap is no longer available from Direct Parts.  That's a pity.  The 5995 set is likely to be expensive secondhand, but maybe I can find a reasonably priced 5510 (or two) one day.  At least now I know which direction to look in.

There is so much to love about this diorama!

The booths are brilliant! The creative use of the target for the dunk tank is great. All the games are wonderful (love the construction stuff used to build the hammer strength test!) as well as the awesome displayed prizes.

The contest for jams and pickles, and all the animal exhibits are spot on. And all the food stalls are great.  The whole thing really makes the new funfair sets come to life. Nice job!  :xmascheer:

Thanks so much!

I must admit the dunking booth was the hardest part of the whole thing. It took a lot of researching pictures of them (because I usually only see the one at our fair after dark) and experimenting with a lot of different parts and designs. It's still not exactly what I wanted. The strength tester/bell ringer was hard, too. Chris had to help me some with that one.

Such a  diorama. I really enjoyed the video too. A lot of things have been said; you really have made such a pretty scene with all these customized booths.

Ever since I saw the movie Big Business with where Bette Midler visited a country fair I dreamed of visiting one myself. Maybe one day...

Great settup there some really creative work on the stalls I really like a lot of them and the pony ride sign also the fact that you've mixed in old and new sets I had some of them as a kid with one of the 1990's playground sets. You've also got some nice families there personally I quite like the guy with the grey spiky hair and beard and the stall holder for the basketball game with the flowery shirt don't think I've seen that one before

Uhm.

Totally agree on several points there the commentary throughout was good particularly about Grandma discovering her inner child   :D. Also don't like the look of the sheep rodeo I've seen far worse things but, still there's some strange people in the world cheering kids on as well  :-\  and agree about the animals looks a bit odd seeing them all hung up as prizes hard to stopp thinking of them as real life (... uh sort) of playmobil animals.

Generally though great settup very bright and creative  :)

Ah this is great, I was expecting a dio with the new rides, and it turns out to be a custom made carnival!

Details I specifically liked:

- the Pony Rides sign
- the boy feeding the cow  ;D
- the kids rodeo (since it's in plastic, no harm done!)
- jellie and pickle contests, ha!
- the description of the band playing ("country/rocker wannabe local band")
- the granny who's totally excited about her ice cream cone
- the two kids on the fairis wheel (puppy love?)
- every one of the custom made attractions: wonderfully done  :) Floating cups game! Duck shooter!  Oh and the lady in the dunking booth  ;D
- all the displayed prizes to pick out

The whole dio looks amazing in the dark with the lights on.

Wow!

Nothing much else to add to what everyone else has said. So many amazing ideas Bonniebeth! I especially like the ducking stall, very popular attraction at school fairs over here, when the teachers volunteer for a ducking!

Carnies (I had to look that word up, but it's obvious really!) often do look like that, scary! In our family, we tend to avoid those funfairs which pitch up for a week then move on. Too pricey, too rigged against the punter, too many scary people!

Do State Fairs have flower or vegetable displays/ contests? These are often a feature of the British equivalent of State Fairs, where there is often a marquee for competitors to display their horticultural splendours. The smell in the flower tent is just amazing! Maybe the Big Top tent from the circus (if you have one) could double up as the horticulture tent? You would need lots of flowers and vegetables to display... And another table to put it on. On second thoughts, forget the idea, your Fair is just great as it is!

Thank you! I've never seen flowers at the fair here, but that sounds really lovely. There are contests for prize pumpkins and stuff like that, along with the livestock shows and jelly contests, pie contests, etc. The big top is a really good idea for that, actually. Especially if you cut out just a white cover rather than the striped circus cover. Unfortunately I recently sold my circus stuff. :(

our county fair has a "Hall of Flowers" contest display in one of the huge buildings. Local landscaping companies compete for prizes on a set theme. It takes them around 6 months to set up.

There are at least a dozen exhibitors. Same building we use for the train show

Then the heirloom seed folks show up and do a whole vegetable event at a different time.

Wow, that looks really amazing. It's interesting to hear what they do at different fairs. At our fair this last year, there was a booth where they were making those triangular oriental hats where you could watch how they do it, and selling them. Not a big thing, but I thought it was interesting. I'd never seen that there before. There was also a company that makes pre-fabricated homes (a.k.a. trailers) that had a furnished model home there on site that you could walk through.

Another interesting thing is the types of fair food in different areas. Here, besides normal carnival food, there's seafood, lots of fried alligator, boudin, and smoke trucks selling BBQ ribs.
