Title: Toys R Us filing for chapter 7 bankruptcy
Post by: Indianna on March 14, 2018, 15:10:00
James (JLMatterer) reported last September that Toys R Us was filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy (which was intended to let them get back on their feet) but now it appears that Toys R Us is going out of business entirely, as least in the U.S.

Toys R Us prepares plan to liquidate its business  (https://www.cnbc.com/2018/03/13/toys-r-us-is-preparing-to-file-its-liquidation-plan-with-the-court.html)

This will obviously make it more difficult for a lot of folks to buy Playmobil, but keep an eye out at Tuesday Morning, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and other "outlet" retailers after a few months for leftover stock.

It doesn’t come as a huge surprise. I’ve seen the dwindling of the selection. It’s a shame though.

On the one hand that's bad to have fewer places to buy Playmobil. On the other hand it could be good for the local toy stores that are still around. They should be getting some sales bumps out of this, and that is a good thing.

Oh yeah, I think the little shops will be more popular at this point.

Wow. I probably won't miss them, but it's not like we *have* little stores that carry Playmobil here. I wonder if we will see any sales on their website before they go.

Just had a look at their website and unless I missed something, there was no knights, princess, history stuff.

I am going to keep an eye on the selection (most sets are 25% off on their website). I used my remaining rewards certificate to grab the Aquarium for $29

In the UK all TRU stores are closing.

I haven't been to a TRU in quite a while. I have fond memories of the deeply discounted sets I acquired in past years.

The closing of TRU will force me to have to purchase my sets online as there are only 3 small retailers within 50 miles of me (and one jacks the prices up worse than TRU)

Speaking of small retailers, I just visited my local toy shop (5 min walk away) for the first time in a while. They used to have a whole corner dedicated to PM, with bins of loose Playmonimals and DS sets. That's all been cut down to about three by four feet of total wall space, no loose sets.  :'(

Yesterday, I went to one of the stores that was on the first list of stores to close. It was depressing and the entire store was a complete mess. Playmobil was 40% off and there wasn't much left. There was tons of LEGO because this brand had no sale percentage whatsoever! Very odd for a store closing sale!

It´s Always said when a toystore goes belly-up.
It feels to me that each time that happens a bit of the innocense is lost.

It's sad for the founder that this has happened because he's just died within the last couple of days. Ironically his last name was Lazarus.

Maybe unsold stocks of Lego will go back to the supplier. I doubt Lego in it's current state wants to see large amounts of its product flood the market at cheap rates undercutting its other stockists.

I think a lot of companies will suffer from the store closings. Most cities don't have any independent stores that carry Playmobil. The Majorette toy cars were only reissued exclusively at Toys R Us a few years back. The list goes on.

I went to one of the 2 TRUs within an hour drive from me today.  It's only a 10% discount currently- which means its cheaper to buy the stuff on their website.

I stopped by a few more locations and some actually had LEGO on sale....for 5% off! I thought this was a leftover April Fool's joke. Oddly enough, new Playmobil sets have popped up including the new Jet, Aquarium, and a few others. The signs on the doors stated they are clearing out their warehouses and to check back often. There are TONS of the Series 11 Blind Bags available. I'm hoping to snap up quite a few if and when the store is 80-90% off.

They have closed the website now. Still only 10% off here at the most recent check. Needs to get to 25% off for Playmobil before I will consider getting anything.

I’m hoping that the 2 near me will still have decent selections left, but 10% just isn’t enough of a deal.

They've raised the price of the Mystery Fi?ures from $2.99 to $3.99. Toys R Us is not having a good death.
