Title: Adventure 6x6 4844
Post by: Rasputin on March 24, 2011, 05:03:09
Well the kids wanted to go with me to the toy store seeing that I and they had soon to expire coupons/gift cards. Our lego maniac picked out the folding rocket (which he was very impressed with) and the other wanted his own folding hoopty ride. I wanted to take advantage of the 40% off sale and bought for $20 a 4844. Talk about inappropriate box art. If you thought a guy drinking one little beer was bad you are in for a treat. Mr Action hear not only can drive hanging out the window as he exits the infested jungle waters with one hand, he is able to sight in on some mysterious prize that requires grappling. Now that is hardly adrenalin pumping enough. Lets have our trusty companion pack us a cargo load of loose dynamite, guns, gas cans and just about anything else we can see maiming us in the ensuing accident that is surly to happen.

It was based on a mid sized amphibious 6x6. The military application is larger and the civilian is smaller.

The annoying "WARNING" deal is firmly in place.

This had a lot of bags. Inside the instruction bag were more bags. I still do not have a scale but I can see how this set has a lot of plastic weight.

Now with the 6x6 we get this interesting working suspension. This time around the center wheels are truly independent of each other . The front and back wheels also have standard side to side suspension. The only thing missing were some springs.

The Klickies were very nicely done. From the clothing accessories to the colors and tones chosen these two looked attractive.

Now the accessories were in plenty. They have it all - dynamite, shovel, GPS, radio, flashlight, machete, new style gas can, ax, grapple, binoculars and just in case a high powered rifle w/scope.

I carefully use the antenna to apply the 4 decals. This way I avoid getting dirt from my skin on the decal adhesive and it helps to align them correctly.

Now one thing I did not like is the storage of the ramps. You can see vertical slits in the side walls. These are probable for water escapes. Now if they were sized appropriately the ramps could have fit into the groves. This would have provided a cargo divider system.

The over all color and print on the vehicle is not the best but not Fisher Price either. It is about as close to real military with preserving some civilian charm.

Over all this was an excellent buy. The boys love it and it get used a lot. I was able to buy if for $20 and comparatively it was a very great bargain. I have yet to try it in water but with the rain every day I may need it for my own rescue.

If you have any inclination in buying this set TRU has a sale until 4/2/11 for 40% off bringing the final price to $20.

Really nice review. It is a very nice set indeed. I've had it around for a while now and must admit that I haven't done anything with it yet as I was re-aranging my Playmobil room.

I've never thought of using an antenna to place the decals, but maybe it's something I'll try next time (especially with the smaller ones).

Nice review of an interesting set, Ras.  One for the custom fire brigade clan I suspect.

We've had this for a while and it is a great set. Thanks for the detailed and amusing review! Poor bikini girl, indeed.  :( Your comments on the box art had me laughing, because it's so true! And very good point about how the ramp storage could have been better. It would be really cool if it was the way you said.

I usually use a clean fine point razor blade but I was too lazy to get up, climb down the ladder in the barn and then find it. The antenna worked fine enough but I prefer the blade

Yes I was surprised that our resident rescue collectors have not customized this set yet. It seems it would make a great military or rescue vehicle.

Poor bikini girl, indeed.  :(

It was the jealous co-pilot, she forced the steering wheel to swerve and purposefully hit the blond walking in the middle of the jungle.

Excellent review Ras! Thanks for showing this interesting set! I was thinking about using it for a firefighting custom, & now leaning more towards it due to its military type capabilites.

I have a question for you Ras, is the vehicle color the same red as the fire department trucks or more orange in color? ???
Title: Re: Adventure 6x6 4844

I suspect that the paintings are tampo printed, and if so, can easily come off with non-acetone nail polish remover, so it's perfectly suitable for a fire-fighting special vehicle. I first want to see how my snow cat will come out, but when it's done i may give this 6 wheeler a go.

The red of the 6x6 is different. It is more of a wine red than a cherry red. The klicky in the middle came from the hoopty truck.

With some quick accessories it easily becomes a fire fighting swamp machine. Every thing is safely locked on. You can see how the ramps are correctly stored.   One disappointment is the gauge of the roll bars. They are a bit larger than a klickies hand so the black clips will get distorted. The 3 way would not fit due to how it can not stretch enough. Now that I see close ups I am wondering why it says RS2X3, shouldn't it be RS6X6 ?

Grigori, even though the color isn't a perfect match, I say it's good enough. In the future I may go for it and try to make a custom (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/luwerner/gif/cheers.gif).

And yes, 2x3 is wrong. It should say 6X6, 4x6 or 2x6 - you have to have power to 2, 4 or all 6 wheels, never just to 3 (or 1 or 5).

Thanks for the color comparison Ras. It will do OK fine. The RS2x3 means 2 rows x 3 wheels = 6 wheel drive.

Bill, 2×3 would mean the vehicle has three wheels but two of them have drive (are powered). A vehicle with six wheels and all of them powered should be expressed by 6×6. Like a front wheel drive four-wheeled passenger car is expressed by 4×2. The only 2×3 in the PM line up is this one:

Marston Mats. The “ramps” you refer to are called Marston Mats. They were used as temporary road bed throughout WWII to include roads, bridges, airfields, etc. Best used as an overlay on some other material.

Thanks for the info Andy R. It is strange that it says they were tough as the ones we had used bent quite easily. There had to be on a firm base for them to work well. If you were in mud they would disappear and get distorted. We are getting 3'X8'X1/2" thick polyethylene mats instead
Title: Re: Adventure 6x6 4844
Post by: Bill Blackhurst on March 26, 2011, 21:33:55
I always thought they would need to be quite thick thus making them too heavy especially if covered with mud for the average worker to handle. Now after hearing they distorted easily in extreme conditions, the mats seem like a better choice!

Great review, and funny too  ;D

My nephew has this vehicle. He mainly uses it to drive over other cars

Is bikini girl ok?  :-\  Maybe she is better off in hospital than sunbathing in a crocodile-swamp anyway.

No, she is currently in the trunk of some hoodlums car, never quite made it to the hospital    :hmm:
