Title: How To Train Your Dragon
Post by: tahra on August 26, 2017, 18:55:13
Starting the HTTYD reviews (link on playkingdoms) (http://www.playkingdoms.com/pk2/library/articles/httyd/httyd.aspx)...

First, Dragons: 9245 - Gobber with Catapult  (link on playkingdoms) (http://www.playkingdoms.com/pk2/library/articles/httyd/9245p1.aspx)

More at the link..

And some more later. I don't have Berk, the boat or the weird ballista... not sure we'll get that last one.

Who else has this guy? Does the helmet settle well?

thanks for sharing (as usual, beautiful release by geobra but not for me to collect ;D)

Great reviews; I look forward to reading the rest of them!

I agree with you that the accessories with Hiccup are great, but the printing and mould for Toothless could be improved.

Yeah, Gobber's helmet isn't a perfect fit, but after a while it seems to settle on nicely.

Really? Nothing? I find that VERY hard to believe, master cheng  :P

Great reviews; I look forward to reading the rest of them!

Thank you.. Almost done - still the fat guy to go. I will get Berk and the ship later.. not sure about that multiweirdballista thing yet.

I agree with you that the accessories with Hiccup are great, but the printing and mould for Toothless could be improved.

I was severely disappointed with Toothless's sculpt. HOW in Hades is it possible to ruin it?! :'(  He's soooooooo cute. Probably the cutest critter on the whole thing! And don't get me started on the shooting and blinkywinky. GAH.

Yeah, Gobber's helmet isn't a perfect fit, but after a while it seems to settle on nicely.

Really? How's that possible?

I don't know, I was just playing around with the helmet trying to make it fit and considering some sticky tak and then it just sat properly.

Great reviews so far.
I had a real problem with Stormfly and the wings. The wing attachment mis so tight when I try to bend the wings the hard attachment piece pops out of the body. Easily adjusted but having to reattach the wing every time you change a pose is annoying. I do like this one the best by far of the dragons anyway though.

Thank you :)

That happened to me the first time I moved her wing too! I am hopeless attaching wings.. always have a real hard time  :-[

I do like this one the best by far of the dragons anyway though.

Me too. And she is spot on!

There is something wrong with Toothless, unfortunately. I can't believe they messed it up. :'(

I don't even understand how that is freaking POSSIBLE, you know?

Astrid's saddle looks great (and so does she)! :D

I agree that the gloves are nice too; although, I don't really like using glove pieces since they always look strange unless turned to completely cover the hand.

As for Astrid's hair - is it the same colour as the hair on the northern princess figure in Series 11? That was the first I had seen that colour, and I was surprised at how nice it is.

Yes, they both do

Point.. but.. well.. PLAYMOgloves, we know how they work... (though I agree sometimes it does look off)

Yes, it is..

Astrid's hair color is not THAT unique..  here are a few (there may be more!) of that same color:

The problem is that it doesn't match beards.. I don't really care if the hairs match each other, but they all should have matching beards (and all beards should have matching hairs - and not just a more... unfortunate sculpt, like it happens with Gobber's amazing facial hair!)

(gonna work on the fat dude review now... )

And the last one for now:

Dragons: 9248 - Drago and Thunderclaw (link on playkingdoms) (http://www.playkingdoms.com/pk2/library/articles/httyd/9248p1.aspx)

I hope to get  the others... probably even that silly ballista-contraption-thingy  ::)

I have trouble with Astrid riding on Stormfly, as well. There seems to be one good position for the feet to lock in, & she'll fall off in seconds if it's not found. I'm into Drago's hair as the material allows it to flow over the shoulders, but the shelf life of the stuff never occurred to me. Yes, the seam is VERY obvious. I haven't gotten anything beyond the 3 main dragons so far, but will probably get the rest. I want the little dragons in Berk.

After being on and off the list a bunch of times, Berk is currently in. I want the little dragons, and the Book of Dragons (besides the chief, though I have him).. and the statues!

Boat is to buy too... And maybe the silly contraption too...

I will skip the boat but will get Berk I think. The boat does have the figure with the new bear head hat - not to be confused with the previous wolf head hats. So I will get a few of those from parts, and hopefully the whole figure some time.

So far the plan is to use the sail on another viking ship, and do something else with that one...

I like the klicky too :)

Point.. but.. well.. PLAYMOgloves, we know how they work... (though I agree sometimes it does look off)

They nearly always look strange to me, so I have a giant pile of them because none of my figures wear them. I much prefer hands to be coloured to give the appearance of some kind of glove.

I thought something looked off about Drago's hair too. Thanks for showing it in such detail! I don't like that material at all, but I suppose it allows his head to move. His beard looks great, but the figure overall doesn't look nearly as deranged or evil as the character.

I like the polar ones, and for space.. but yes, looks way better when the hand matches the color of the glove. I suppose with polars I am just used to them (our first gloves too  )

Colored hands have the advantage of letting us use any skin color too.  ;D

Well, I tend to focus on the stuff that interest me the most, I suppose. My sister pointed that out.

The hair is great, except the material.. but I have no idea how to make it differently.

I find the beards without mustache a bit weird looking.

Like I mentioned, I didn't much like the second movie.. especially ****'s death (I was shocked - it's supposed to be a kid movie, and I wasn't ready for it). Plus I found the whole idea with the mother kinda.. silly.

So I don't really remember much of the Drago's character...

I love this piece from Berk (9243), even with the silly horns. Its inspiration seems obvious, but who can answer my question: Was the illustrious idea born at Dreamworks or Geobra?

I agree that the introduction of Hiccup's mother as a character was a tad strange, but it worked in the context of the world. Overall, I really enjoyed the second film though, especially with the characters being older (which I was worried about at first). The show is also quite entertaining if you get a chance to watch it.

Speaking of Hiccup's mother, it'd be cool if they released a set with Valka and Cloudjumper. :)

Those are in the films. There are large carvings in the waters at Berk.

What I've been wondering is whether that sword can be used by the trolls or the Colossus.

I didn't like the whole storyline of his mom. Seemed completely outlandish to me.. And the death ruined it.

I think they aged well though!  :)

:-[  I don't remember the names - more dragons? .... Ok, cheated - his mom and a big dragon :)  They would look playmogreat, I think!

Guess you missed it in the PROCESS (link) (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=8205.msg292814#msg292814) :P  The trolls can. I don't have the Super 4 thing.

I believe that had been confirmed on the PCC too.

Ah, nice! Something about the mould (the hilt part perhaps) seems to let them down though. They just don't seem very realistic... even in Playmobil terms.

I like them... For the trolls.. It is good to have some variety. I find the common things (the ones made for klickys) completely ridiculous in their big hands.

First, Dragons: 9245 - Gobber with Catapult  (link on playkingdoms) (http://www.playkingdoms.com/pk2/library/articles/httyd/9245p1.aspx)

More at the link..

I just got mine today. I'm quite pleased with the catapult: very refreshing to see an entirely new model after all those many 3653 war machines (also 3030, 7700, 5738, 4438). I'll do a shooting test soon.

But, while assembling, it struck me, once again: PM is doomed, imo, simply because they do not adhere to the idea that parts should be mutually compatible. What I mean now: basically same machine, same wheels, but - why, oh why - a different connecting bit?

(left 9245, right 3653, etc.)

The parts in 9245 are narrower and have distinctive upper and lower sides. Couldn't they have designed the new frame to hold the old axle parts? Apparently not. :( Chaos will reign.

Best wishes

been happening for a while....aren't the designers told to save on moulds, part numbers and stocking? especially such an unimportant part, even if the old mould is spoilt, they still have the technical drawings and can (faster) reproduce a new mould....i cant think of any reason why they do this, can anyone with design/production experience lessen our pain once and for all?

New one is on the left yes? It uses half the plastic. Take that times 10 thousand and it adds up in costs. Now when you subtract out the cost of making the new mold it may or may not work out, but if they reuse the new mold a bunch of times it will work economically.

Thanks for the great review. I got a few of the bear hats and just want to note that they are a light grey and not white as they sometimes look in photos. I don't think I need this set but would like to get a few of the soldier figures I think, it's a nice one.

Thank you. And true - I expected those side things to be separate parts...

Thank you. The bear hats are nice - and off white, yes - but I do find them somewhat creepy, in a morbit sort of way... Stupid, I suppose. So, didn't buy more...

The ship's sail is GORGEOUS, the ship itself, like I said, and that is IMO, of course, is NOTHING viking-like. But we have plans. Didn't try it yet, but the idea is to use that beautiful sail in a viking ship... We have a couple, and it would look weird if they were all "twins", right?

As to the soldier klicky.. he's gorgeous, and AMAZING for parts too :)

Working on Berk's review. A long one (7 pages, I THINK). Deep breath. You WILL not believe THAT mess. Gah.  >:(

Tahra,

I sent this off to my contact at Playmobil, I too have had brand new sets arrive with scuffing. Maybe they will be able to make some changes. All we can do is advise and wait and see.

Tahra,

I sent this off to my contact at Playmobil, I too have had brand new sets arrive with scuffing. Maybe they will be able to make some changes. All we can do is advise and wait and see.

Please do let me know if you get any feedback. If they are like the "top", unlikely. They were quite clear on that.

I am thinking on how to go about this. I mean, boxes are usually ridiculous, but this is outrageous! I can't believe it's just me. And note that we could probably fit another 3 dragons there, with the wings not attached.

Besides that, having to clean a brand new set...  It's a disgrace.  It HAS happened before, like you said, but this made the set unusable. NOT acceptable for a set bought new.

If stuff was properly bagged AND/OR in a proper box, this wouldn't happen (ok, if that moronic blue bag was included, it might, but damages would be quite limited).  It's an insult to us. Besides being wasteful and all that. Oh, and good luck finding a box in good condition. Not to mention the high chances of getting broken parts. The first pyramid had a broken part when I opened it. Brand new. Another stupid box, with the parts rattling about... :(

I LOVE playmobil. That is why this makes me so mad. And sad.

A great review on Playkingdoms, Tahra! Lots of detail about the packaging and assembly gripes, but your enthusiasm for the final result came through clearly, as well as acknowledging that at least the parts fit together precisely. One thing I notice about non-PM plastic toys is how poorly the parts fit together, often. I must get one of those Stoic figures!

Good use of the word 'fracking' btw, linking your frustration to a disastrous practice of the oil industry!

Thank you..  Sometimes I fear I am too harsh.. I THINK it goes without saying that I do love playmobil, or I wouldn't buy the darn things, and certainly would not trouble myself reviewing it, right?

The thing is beautiful - if limited... One day (if I live long enough!) I hope to be able to make SOMETHING of it, with a bunch or rockies/vegetation.. and maybe some walls...

I must get one of those Stoic figures!

That could maybe be arranged.. Email me ;)

;D   (though I am NOT limited to kindergarten language on playkingdoms, I believe SOME words should not be used - which troubles me greatly regarding a custom.... wip..  Have NO idea how I will overcome that)

I am so sorry you had that horrible mess with the blue bag, what a shame. A shame is also the "Mogelpackung", as germans call it, I still can't believe that whole theme fits in the box!....  :omg:

It was great to look at Berk in all the detail. I agree that the colors work perfectly and those stones with the green steps look beautiful.  The best though was that bird on the mouth of the statue  ;D

And there. Berk done

Thank you for the elaborate review, Tahra!

The blue bag is a sorry tale. You should have this rectified: it looks like an improvisation at the assembly line when they'd run out of regular, non-staining bags.

Great to see Berk in detail. The gate with flanking figures is very attractive. I did contemplate getting it on its own, but decided against it as it won't stand properly without the lower rock part (the connecting bits get in the way), and cannot accommodate it all.

The larger, lower rock part is identical to the big boy in the Western fortress 5245 but in a different colour, right?

Thanks again and best wishes

The beautiful doors just slide in place...  but it is odd - huge doors... and TWO open doorways RIGHT NEXT to it  ???

The larger, lower rock part is identical to the big boy in the Western fortress 5245 but in a different colour, right?

Don't know - I try to avoid these silly system WHY things... Don't have the large western sets. But looking at it on playmodb, I don't think so.  No side systemX connectors on Berk.

You know how they LOVE to make new huge parts, instead of actually reusing something  ::)

A great review and great pics.. Playmo dragons have come such a long way from the first one that came out in the early 90s ( In fact I remember the day buying it along with the Barons castle) and its great to see how from a single dragon this has evolved to this theme ......

Personally, I think there are FAR too many dragons..

Though I would except this particular theme - I mean, there SHOULD be all the main characters, being what it is.. :)

Now you can prepare for reviewing the next batch of sets.

Your customs using Hiccup's flying suit are great. They look like a combination of the Defenders of the Wing and the Wingmaidens from the series.
