10. Simple functional test of LGB track switch drive
(from zugpferdchen)

To test a LGB track switch drive (if it´s working or not) you only need a transformer e.g. from Playmobil or LGB

- connect 2 wires from the transformer-output which normally is used to go to the rails to the connectors of the track switch drive.

Now simply drew the controller knob from left to right and vice versa, the track switch should also switch from left to the right and vice versa.

Attention: Do not test too long otherwise the coil of the drive can be damaged due to the high current which is flowing.
                 So test quickly and disconnect the drive soon.

Look here:

11. The crystals (x-tals) for the RC-train
(from Junker Jörg)

Playmobil is offering 5 different pairs of crystals for the RC-train.

Here are the used frequencies:

26,995 MHz = brown (order no. 7569)
27,045 MHz = red (order no. 7360)
27,095 MHz = orange (order no. 7571)
27,145 MHz = yellow (order no. 7570)
27,195 MHz = green (order no. 7572)
(order numbers taken from playmobil.de)

Source: Playmobil

Crystal with different frequencies than provided by Playmobil can be purchased in specialised electronics shops or via the internet.
These crystal are also fitting without the plastic cap into loco and remote control,
only take care that the connectors are hitting the holes while plugging it in.
Otherwise the pins of the crystal can be damaged or twisted.

Crystals are always offered in pairs.
The T-crystal belongs to the transmitter, here remote control; the R-crystal to the receiver, in our case the loco.
The small dents on the plastic caps of the original Playmobil crystals are preventing the interchange between T and R.
If you have different crystals (not from Playmobil) check the printing on the housing.

17. Gauge, scale and track
(from Junker Jörg)

The gauge is the distance between the railheads.
This distance is 45 mm (Playmobil, LGB and the big PIKO).
Faller Play- and E-Train trains, which are fitting from size also to Playmobil, are running on tracks with a gauge of 32mm.

The scale is the proportion between the model and the real example.
Playmobil is commonly counted to the scale 1:22,5 (mainly because the Playmobil trains are attributed to LGB).
But this only nearly correct, because the proportions of a Playmobil figure does not fit to a real person (the legs are too short and the body is too broad)

The track is the link between gauge and the scale.
The big Märklin-train and LGB are running on tracks with a gauge of 45mm.
Märklin designs in the scale of 1:32 (= Spur I / track I), this means that here 45mm are a real track distance of 1435mm (standard gauge).
LGB use the scale of 1:22,5, so the real gauge is (approx.) 1000mm (meter gauge), this gauge is used e.g. by the Harzer narrow-gauge railways.
Therefore LGB (and of course Playmobil and the big PIKO) are belonging to track IIm. The “m” indicates that it is not the standard gauge but rather narrow-gauge.

This means:
Playmobil train = Track IIm

Faller E-/Playtrain (= Track IIe) are running on 32mm , which is in reality (scale 1:22,5) approx. 750mm (like the “Rasender Roland” on the island of Rügen)

Playmobil Mine railway (=  Track IIi) with a gauge of 24mm,  means 500mm in reality, which is the classical narrow-gauge railway.

The gauge IIm is the reason why LGB hasn´t produced “normal” locos like 01,18 or 89 for a very long time. LGB has always produced narrow-gauge trains (even if they produced sometimes also other narrow-gauge models).
This also is the explanation for the buffer in the middle (above the coupling): Standard gauge trains have two buffers (left and right of the coupling), narrow-gauge trains one buffer in the middle. Playmobil never takes care about that and ever uses 2 buffers. So in principle Playmobil started decades ago what LGB and PIKO are doing since several years: Putting standard gauge on narrow-gauge tracks.

Popular tracks today:
IIm (1:22,5 - LGB, Piko and Playmobil);
I (1:32 – the big Märklin);
0 ("Zero") (1:45 – famous in the past, longtime away from market, now back from LENZ);
H0 ("Ha Null" oder "Half Zero", nearly half oft he size of track 0) (1:87 – the best known size with trades like Fleischmann, Piko, Märklin, Trix...);
TT (1:120 - Tillig; was popular in GDR, therefore a lot of GDR model cars are still available)
N (1:160 - Minitrix and Fleischmann);
Z (1:220 - Märklin Miniclub).

IIm (1:22,5 - LGB, Piko und Playmobil);
I (1:32 - die Große Märklin);
0 ("Null") (1:45 - früher sehr beliebt, dann so gut wie ausgestorben; seit ein paar Jahren wieder von der Firma Lenz produziert);
H0 ("Ha Null" oder "Halbnull", weil ungefähr halb so groß wie Spur 0) (1:87 - die bekannteste Größe mit Marken wir Fleischmann, Piko, Märklin, Trix...);
N (1:160 - Minitrix und Fleischmann);

I = 1:32 = 45mm
0 = 1:45 = 32mm
