The chronicles of Mittland Part 03 Time of the wolves

ARN seized to his neck and showed the dwarf his medallion, which he carried at a chain. „Say to me, do you know many humans, who carry the sign of the wolf?“ The small one saw the medallion and recognized it. He nodded and said some words in the dwarf language to his companions. Then they disappeared together in the dark cave entrance.

LILIAN looked at ARN without understanding. „A last test “, explained the wolf man to the young woman. ARN removed the saddle and the bridle of his horse. Then he took the supply bag on his shoulders. He instructed LILIAN to do the same. Then they hid the saddles and dismissed the horses into the liberty. „They will use us nothing inside the mountains.“

ARN walked now to the rock, and LILIAN followed him. „We are ready!“ The wolf man called against the mountain. In far distance they heard a quiet rattling. Then a small gap opened before them in the rock, and finally a man-high opening swivelled to the side. A dark entrance opened itself before them. LILIAN was astonished. She had seen before nothing from the secret door.

The wolf man and LILIAN entered the passage. The white-bearded one received them with two carts, which were pulled by snow-white unicorns. LILIAN saw such animals for the first time in her life. „Take place! ZIHIT and YESIS will bring you to the highest pit master. He will listen to you. And then you will decide, what is to be done.“ ARN took place in the first cart behind ZIHIT, LILIAN rose in the second to YESIS. The white-bearded dwarf discharged a short whistle, and the wild ride by the mountain began.

The unicorns pulled the carts with high speed by the close lugs. The wheels rumbled over loose rock, and the passengers made one or another inadvertent air jump. ARN and the young woman had to hold on their places, in order to be not hurled from the small carts. On the difficulties of their passengers the coachmen did not take any consideration, instead they propelled the animals to a still higher speed.
