Pumuckl
« on: February 27, 2018, 15:59:10 »
"Pumuckl neckt, Pumuckl versteckt und niemand was meckt...

...das reimt sich, und was sich reimt, ist gut!"

Pumuckl is a friendly kobold well known by - I dare say - any German child. Created by famous children's books author Ellis Kaut in 1962 (first as a radio drama, later on as books, audiobooks and a TV show) the stories of the wee red haired kobold and his human friend master chippie Eder have been watched, heard and read by countless children since.

Pumuckel ist ein freundlicher Kobold, den so ziemlich jedes Kind in Deutschland kennt. Er wurde 1962 von der Kinderbuchautorin Ellis Kaut erfunden - zunächst für eine Radiohörspielreihe. Später erschienen die Bücher, Hörspiele und Fernsehserien, die seither von zahllosen Kinder gesehen, gelesen und gehört wurden.

Trotz seiner Bekanntheit habe ich bislang nur drei Playmobilversionen von ihm gefunden. Though quite famous I've found only three Playmobil versions of him:

Dabei wurden zweimal Erwachsenenkörper verwendet. Nur das dritte Bild zeigt einen Kinderkörper, dem der Kopf einer passend großen Pumucklpuppe aufgesetzt wurde. Jedes ein schöner Eigenbau - aber zu groß, wenn's ein richtiges Dio werden soll. Es war also höchste Zeit, endlich einen "richtigen" Pumuckl zu bauen, der auch die passende Größe hat. Denn schließlich braucht's ja auch den Meister Eder mit dazu.
Twice an adult figurine was used; once a child showing an other Pumuckl figurines head. Each a nice custom, but too big as to provide an entire scene. So it's about time to create a Pumuckl small enough to allow Meister Eder to be cusotmized as well.

Hier nun also Meister Eder und sein Pumuckl in Playmobil.

Sounds very interesting - watching and waiting!

But what exactly is a cobold?  I doesn't translate into English or French.

A kobold is a small mythical creature, like a gnome or a fairy. More information than you could wish here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobold

JJ's use of the word here sounds like an extended meaning - just a little magical type creature, and not a mine-dweller as in the old meaning of the word.

Cute custom, I wonder if Pumckl is related to Puck, a small supernatural creature that sometimes helps out or might cause mischief.
Pretty sure that the figure with the pigtails is Pippi Longstocking, not Pumuckl.
Great grandfather type custom too.

Great custom :)

I remember Pumuckl  - I mean, I remember the red hair and main colors, and he kept saying something like "it rhimes, and all that rhimes is good"...  Unfortunately, I don't remember the "human friend".

(those last ones - from ebay - are not playmo though..  )

Now sprites I understand.  Thanks for the link.

Ok, it's "sprite" then. I checked for possible translations but none of the given (e.g. pixie, gnome, goblin or imp) seemed to match properly. As "kobold" was sugested also for those creatures said to be residing on ships I chose that. But am I to assume "kobold" is not a regular BE word?

The tricky point is that the German word "Kobold" also has different meanings or connotations, so it's hard to guess which may be represented by which English translation.

Back to topic  8}. Und weiter geht's.

1. Pumuckl

Ich hab mir für eine Kleinkindfigur entschieden, um das richtige Größenverhältnis zum Meister Eder hinzubekommen. I chose a toddler's figurine to find a proper ratio to Meister Eder.

Die Frisur mußte ein wenig aufgepeppt werden, um den passenden, roten Wirrschopf darzustellen. Hair had to be beefed up to represent the mop uf fuzz.

Den roten Wirrschopf, um genau zu sein - a red mop of fuzz more precisely.

Das Hemd gelb (die Hose ist grad zum Lackieren  ;)) - a yellow shirt (britches taken off for painting).

jj:

Kobold is much more rarely used in English, and doesn't have the broad connotations the German word does. In fact most people (at least Americans), if they recognize the word at all, will know it from Dungeons & Dragons, where it refers to a lizardy type creature:

Natürlich brauchen unsere beiden Hauptpersonen auch ein Haus.

So schaut's im Film aus - Master chippie Eder's house as presented in the TV show.

Mal schauen, wie nah ich da rankommen werden - let's see how close I can get.

Die Haustüre  mußte ein wenig angepaßt werden - und ich finde, "falschherum" schaut sie besser aus. The entrance door had to be changed.

Böden und Wände kommen dazu. Floors and walls will be covered.

Der Chef inspiziert den Bau. Meister Eder has a close look at what's going on.

Da kommen noch ein paar mehr Fenster rein - more windows will be added later.
