5394 Caesar and Cleopatra
« on: March 03, 2017, 09:03:33 »
Not much to add to Tahra's great review except to have it here.

The three klickies from the front. Each klicky has a different skin tone which adds to the exotic/international flavour of the setting involving two Empires.

Back view and it's nice to see that the leopard print continues over the shoulder and down the otherside.

"Look ma, no hands!"

Cleopatra has dark brown shoes, a shade or so lighter than they appear here.

Printed face Cleopatras. The two in the middle are almost identical, the differences being the skin shade used, the lack of shoes (why?) of the paler one and the necklace of the darker one. They also had different bracelets. The paler one has an extra pair here than it originally came with. So three different face prints all up.

The attendant in this set is basically a male version of series 2 Cleopatra. Same head, arms and skirt.

The accessories. Good to see the shiny gold being used again. The table is an interesting colour, a very light brown with a golden sheen to it. I thought it was a dull gold at first.
Caesar also has a red cloak and shiny gold pugio.

Thanks for the closeups. I'm looking forward to this set.

The leopard skin guy looks like an exact repeat of the one in 4243.

Too nice, I just ordered a couple of the smaller Egyptian sets from DS.

He is. It's ridiculous.

As I noted, from all the romans in this series, Caesar, Julius Caesar is the only different one.

There's a pic of all of them on the review main page: link at playkingdoms

Yeah, so much copying, which wouldn't be so bad but it's done in a way that makes it difficult to efficiently expand units built up from the original Roman theme. So we get more of the same but in a difficult-to-integrate way.

And yes, by contrast the Gyps are a pretty much full redesign, so there's a clear demarcation. Can't use them to build the old collection but there's no confusion.

I'm sure it's been said, but looking at your review of the blue pyramid I have to wonder why they didn't make it so that if you bought two of them they could be joined back to back to form a whole pyramid. They could even have included breakaway edges to give that breakaway look but have them removable if you wanted to join two together.

The other change in the new sets is that the Egyptian chariot and leader are now separately available via DS rather than being together in one set (4244) as part of the main catalogue. I liked the light blue of the old chariot better, but the new Egyptian leader klicky is really nice.

Disagree here. I saw the light blue as signifying lapis lazuli, since it appeared in canopic jars, jewelry, and the war crown. To me that jarred with the quivers and trappings of the war chariot, which could not possibly have been made of lap laz. So I favor the new chariot, while in general favoring the old Gyp theme.
