Parts Suggestions for Corner Clock?
« on: November 19, 2015, 01:34:51 »
Hello,

I'm in the planning stages of my annual Christmas Playmo display. It'll be Chicago circa 1910s (hello Victorian people and cars/trucks coming out of storage!) and the centerpiece will be the corner (mind you, just the corner instead of the massive department store taking up a block) showcasing the famous clock of the Marshall Field and Co. building on State Street.

I'll be using Steck parts for the building itself (won't be an exact replica, but a suggestion of one. Do suggest various parts if desired - they will be appreciated too!)

My question is, which parts would work for the corner clock?

For a close-up picture of the clock, visit this link: http://s3.amazonaws.com/architecture-org/files/events/tour-macys-on-state-legacy-of-marshall-fields.jpg

As for the overall image of the corner, visit this link. http://jetsetenterprises.com/cruise/images/Midwest%20More%20RT/IMG_1234-CHI-MarshallFields.JPG Most likely only building the first three floors and 4 windows deep on each side of the corner.

Thoughts?

How many faces will the clock have?  From the angle of the photo I believe I can see 3, is there a 4th?
I'm glad that I'm not the only one :)

Looks like 4 faces. Seems the arm is supported at one of the corners of the clock.

Tricky one.

For the bottom and possibly the top I would try this part http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-26-6040

for the corners any round staff piece like this http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-25-9950
with these at top and bottom, also for the very top maybe http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-25-8440
or maybe you could use something like these, but I don't know the length on them http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-51-3660
for the clock faces you are probably going to have to just print something out and put it on a flat surface. Ideally the clock face from the train station would be used. It's this part plus a face sticker and hands http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-03-9710, but they run around $10 on eBay US and have been out of production for years. To get 4 would be expensive and difficult.
Not sure about what to do for the support arm. Something like the sign hanger with some additional bits from the Fairy theme tacked on maybe? http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-60-0750

An interesting project, good luck with it!

Tiermann,

Many thanks for the parts suggestions - the top and the holder were what I had in mind. Forgot about the bowl with the socket in the middle - that will work!

As for painting - which paint would be best (washable so I can return to their original conditions in the future if need be - most likely will leave it alone for future builds.).

Adding those to my ever-growing list of parts to order :) (Finally went through my collection of 10 Rubbermaid tubs and inventoried the broken bits and lost bits that need replacing - thankfully a short list!)

Will be sure to post pics once it is done and up.

Finished constructing the facade (4 stories instead of planned 3 to give it a better balance) only to discover....

... that I'm short two windows! Gah! (The round steck castle window parts). Grr. Had to use almost every piece of gray steck wall and all the brown frames plus odd doorways and "broken" wall pieces behind the facade to use as support. (I'll take pictures of the process as I go and post it when the full creation is done). Could have used two more double wide brown frames and six more windows, but making do with what I have even if it makes for a smaller corner view.

For now, there are two doorways instead of windows on the top floor side view (where they hopefully won't be noticed...). But it bothers me  :'(

I know that feeling, never enough double wide open walls for me. Looking forward to the finished project.

It's done - check out the Diorama buildings page for pictures!
