The two friends TORIM and RIGAS sauntered between the stands over the market. TORIM, a strong lad with fire-red hair and innumerable summer rungs in the face, was the son of the carpenter. He had a merry nature, laughed much and talked gladly. His friend RIGAS however was always seriously and spoke only few. When he was a small boy he had lost his father by an accident. Since then his mother and he lived with his uncle, the baker. The two young men knew each other since their childhood, and although they were so different, a close friendship connected them nevertheless .

"... and then I said to him that the boards are putrid and rotten… “, in the middle of the sentence TORIM terminated his speech river, and RIGAS was pleased about the short moment of the silence. His friend pointed forward to one of the dealer. There stood SINA, the daughter of the taylor. “Lot, we welcome the attractive lady… . “ TORIM knew that his friend admired the young woman for a long time, but he had never found the courage to speak to her. Thus he pushed his buddy the elbow into the side and hurried to the woman. Rigas sent a sigh to the sky and followed his friend.

Secretly RIGAS was pleased naturally to see SINA but he knew that he would bring no word in her presence over his lips. TORIM was only a few steps distant from SINA, when they heard loud shouting and trot of horses over the market place. A horse had shuned and ran now fear-fulfilled through the small lanes of the market. It let an empty cart behind itself. The horse had lost the charge already on the road.

The horse ran exactly on to SINA. The nostrils blew themselves. Foam stood before the muzzle of the horse, and the eyes of the animal were opened wide. One saw its panic. Humans cried and tried to bring themselfs in security. Baskets and cases were pushed, and the goods fell to soil. As the first one TORIM moved again. He tossed SINA to the side. The hooves of the horse missed the young woman only around a hair width.

Only a short moment later RIGAS reacted. He jumped on the shrinking of the horse and got the bridle. With all his power, which he trained otherwise to dragging the heavy flour bags, he succeeded to stop the horse and swing then on the backs of the animal. With both hands hew drew the reins and only few centimeters in front of the conditions with the potteries he was able to stop the scared horse. Heavily breathing he calmed down the fearful animal.

The horse had hardly calmed down, a small thick man came already to him. He was completely out of breath and thanked RIGAS with many words for the fact that he had protected the horse and the cart against further harm.

Then he led horse and cart of the place, and the women and men standing around applauded RIGAS. Some of the men knocked him on the shoulders. Other congratulated him with words to his courageous act. All the attention around his person made RIGAS much embarrassed, and he dearest he would clammy-secretly have slinked himself away.

But already TORIM came there, accompanied from SINA. “I may present to you my friend, the fearless RIGAS”, he began. “A young man who doesn't have also fear before big animals.” BUt RIGAS had only eyes for the young woman, and only as TORIM knocked against him, he brought a quiet “hello” over his lips. SINA showed her most beautiful smile to the courageous man. Their dark eyes sparkled like pearls in the sun. RIGAS could not get enough at all of her sight.
