  As a medieval collector, I've always wanted a cathedral in my city. Without church/cathedral, any medieval city seems to be lacking something essential and typical for medieval times. As mainly being a Steck builder, I've always disliked my attempts to create a church or a cathedral as the buildings just weren't large and detailed enough 8} . My biggest concern was the width of the roof, which is, as all steck builders are aware of, limited to 2 building units. If I wanted to build a cathedral, I needed at least a 4 building unit wide roof. The wedding church from 2008 solved my problem as the black sys-x roof part (without slope) allowed me to stack roof parts virutally without limits. :woohoo: That's how I started to discover the fine building possibilities of System-X, resulting in my first small church creation I posted two years ago. After that, I started collecting the parts for this System-X cathedral (see pics). The pictures are all evening/night shots as they focus on the rose and stained glass windows. As I'm living in Belgium, I found a lot of inspiration in the gothic cathedrals of our region (Flanders and Picardy in France). The design is more or less inspired by the cathedrals of Amiens and Paris (France) and the cathedral of Tournai (Belgium). I wanted to make a gothic cathedral but with roman building parts (there are very few useable gothic building parts available, only the gargoyles from the dragontower actually).
The exterior is more or less ready (more statues need to be placed in the front). The interior still needs to be finished, so to be continued...

It is really hard to make out how you put this monstrosity together and I really am curious on how you made it look so great
Thanks for sharing you great talents

(corporate sponsorship?) ;D

Fantastic job Ken! 8-)
Considering that real cathedrals take hundreds of years to build you are going really quickly

You're right, Ras, I'll give you a reference point ;D ;D ;D without the photoshop editing. As you can see the interior is far from finished yet. The big challenge with system-x is the covering of the unused plug-holes :uhoh:, there are so many to be filled. Also the floor is a problem as it looks so 'industrial', more like a prefab concrete floor. I'll use Busch 7201 floor panels and carve church tiles myself.
The story of the building process in short: In 2008 I bought 4 wedding churches and a few DS parts to build my small church. I noticed with the available sys-x parts, a much bigger building would be possible and I got this dream to build a cathedral for my Steck city Kodosak. I played with the nice possibilities of Sys-x and saw this confirmed by some big customs on the boards. Made a rough design on paper and a partlist. To secure part supply I started by ordering the roof parts as I thought they would be run out of stock very quickly (a lot of builders use the black church roofs to build sys-x castles, churches, etc.). The gathering of the parts (every month a large DS order), the building and designing including, it took me about 15 months to complete the structure. Finishing the interior will take me another couple of DS orders. I'll need a lot of bishop chairs, benches, altars, statues, etc.

I do, I have been following this matter. If Geobra could develop Sys-x in a way that the parts have the same look, feel & soul of our beloved steck parts, marvelous creations can and will be made in the future, and then I'm in :)
-
It has been a long time (for me at least) since we have seen a huge building like this created! :wow:
I think it is great when we get to... because now we are all thinking of ways to build our ow Cathedral! :D
-
i have not words to convey my awe. wow :o :o :o :o

Truly a work of art, kenc! Thank you so much for the wonderful pictures.

You even made it in the shape of the cross (from a birds eye view), the way a lot of ancient cathedrals are, didn't you?
-
Its soo beautiful!!! Any particular real life cathedrals you had as a building guide, Ken?

All I can say is "oh my god!" an amazing construction.

the interiors are WOW!!

Actually I had, Panos. Notre Dame of Paris, Notre Dame of Amiens and the four towers in the cross' heart is from the cathedral of Tournai in Belgium

Kenc, this is the most AMAZING building I have ever seen, Playmobil or real scale ! The picture of the nun in the cathedral with the light coming in through the windows behind here is stunning :(o):! Great job!
Ace :brownhair:
-
WOW! You have created an awesome cathedral! Looks like you made some changes since you first posted pics when you were ordering more parts.
-
The church set blew my mind when first opening the box....the pieces are so lovely, and put together are absolutely gorgeous. The light pouring through the stained glass windows is divine. The wall color is so warm.
Left it on our living room coffee table for 6 months and through my son's at home wedding before storing it. The wedding guests loved the PM wedding set up and moving the figures around. Have another set ready to combine with the first one day. Wish I had bought 4 more sets like this!
The church set is the most impressive PM building in the past decade. On pf we seem to be stumped with expanding this set because it is not easy to join the roof pieces of multiple sets. But you have shown us how is can be so artistically done on a massive scale.
And your photos are outstanding...now we can see how the church set is so flexible and can become ornate with some imagination. This is a set that can take on a modern or middle age theme just by making a few changes. And once the floor coverings are installed, the floor holes will not be visible. It is cool that you can attach accessories to the floor through these holes (if you need to make them stable.)
The future of Sys X buildings is assured if you can build something as lovely as this,
Pgal

Wonderfull Creation and great pics !

Hello Kenc,
I love your construction, it is really well made :)9 and the photos are amazing !!!
I here give you a link if you need more idea or just to compare ;) http://www.tricornejock.com/Les_constructions.html (I build this cathedral many years ago)
Kind regards,
TJ

Kenc, I just went trough the pics again. This cathedral is second to none! Truly amazing!
Best,
Arnaud
-
love the new cathedral, way more refined in the sense of detail, the light is really amazing, and the withe color make it even brighter from the inside...
and yeah totally a gothic structure than will suit perfect in middle ages and renaissance...
-
what did you use for the gargoyle heads?
-
what did you use for the gargoyle heads?
The heads come from the 4835 dragon's tower. Although not very customisable, this structure has a rather gothic look and thus has some usable parts like the gargoyles. Unfortunately they're not system-x so I had to attach them using glue paste.

I bet even the pope himself would approve of this magnificent building and your appearantly catholic clickies. ;)
You definatly should send a picture of it to Geobra to show what their designs made possible! Maybe they will send you a priest or something to put in the cathedral?
Just hope that no Protestant clickies will get jalous and rise up. Otherwise you might get something like the "beeldenstorm" going on with your clickies, which happened in the Netherlands. :)
-
I am blown away by this building. It is so incredible, I only wish I could see it in real life :)
-
Would it be possible to see pictures of your medieval Playmobil city?
-
Would it be possible to see pictures of your medieval Playmobil city?
Sure, but I still have to build it however. I have a new room where I display and build with my collection but it's not finished yet. There 's only one table (240x120cm) onto which the cathedral and some surrounding houses are placed. There are four more such tables to come to host the rest of the steck city. The look will be similar to my old city (see pic) but with the cathedral on top of the hill.

In my many years as a LEGO collector I have seen big creations come and go. But Playmobil pushes it a lot further. This is humonguous, incredible and beautiful! Bravo!
Now you've made me want to build the facade of the Notre Dame 8}

This is a brillant work of art, I'd love to see more. That must of taken you a lot of time and parts to make but so well worth all your effort. I am in awe! It reminds me of TricorneJock's Indian Palace and Daniela's Opera house. Yet another awe inspiring piece of system X work. (and steck fans poopoo system X how can you when seeing the vast scope of these buildings ;) )
Well done!!!
