Title: New White Pirate "Schooner" (Sloop)???
Post by: BlackPearl2006 on September 15, 2011, 06:16:53
I was at TRU today (in USA) and saw the 5948 and 5949 boxes in person (the british mini fort and boat).  Has anyone noticed on the box art, in the background you can see a WHITE PLAYMOBIL SCHOONER in the distance, flying white sails, and the square sail has a black skull and crossbones on it?  It's in the background on both sets' boxes!

USA has already gotten the red corsair and the blue one....does this mean we're getting a white one too?  Maybe that's the mysterious missing "5947" we've been wondering about?

(sorry if this has already been covered....I failed to find any info on the schooner spotting in the search function)

Usually in pirate sets (including ghost pirates), if you see something in the background its usually a real set that you can buy too;  although I do know some pirate boxes in the past still showed the BlackBeard ship long after the BlackBeard ship was retired.  For example, the ghost pirate sets showed the ghost ship in the background, which was available.  And the ghostship showed the 3-headed sea serpent which was also available.

I'm curious about the white schooner!  (sloop)  Anyone know anything about this?

P.S.  I took a VERY GOOD LONG LOOK AT BOTH BOXES, and I am 110% CERTAIN IT IS NOT A PICTURE OF THE 5950 Pirate ship (although that would have made more sense).  I saw the 5950 there in the store as well, and it is definitely NOT the same ship in the picture.  That's a Playmobil "Schooner" (aka Playmobil "Corsair") or sloop (in real life) for sure.   UNLESS they used a schooner in place of the 5950 because they didn't have a pic of the 5950 yet when they composed the box art?  I so hope we're getting a new white schooner though!

ooops i found an old thread in july about the new US sets.  Cacholete noticed the schooner as well, but out of five pages only a couple chimed in-- I think it got buried within the thread.  So he was first to notice and say something about the ship.  At least I know I'm not imagining it.

An all-white schooner would be awesome, though I wish it were a non-pirate vessel (nothing a change in sails couldn't fix).  Or maybe playmobil will re-release the original white schooner as part of the victorian theme?  Just like they re-released the car?

I wish

not printed catalogs but they're on the catalog of the US website

sounds exciting if they release a white schooner - do the pieces in the backgrounds always need to exist? i know the schooner has been re-released more than 1 time, just in different colors but sometimes PM puts unexisting stuff in their pictures (like a ferris wheel in the background of the circus outdoor scenery)

Yes sometimes but other times the items in the back do show up. The African hut showed up even though it was a lot smaller than it looked in the picture and then there is the infamous red steck house that 15 years later was released

:) the number missing is the 5947 in the u.s. releases - http://store.playmobilusa.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-US-Site/en_US/Search-Show?cgid=Piraten.
:lens: i know i was the first one to spot this back in july - http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=8498.30 - but i still have some doubts if the "whiteness" is simply photoshopping of an eahisting schooner or a new one.
  :hmm:

p.s.  ;) a visit to this forum's best thread - http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=4639.0 - can help you guess which one of the schooners could be the one.

Oh that would take some digging that I will need time for. I know Richard was around & the theme was not know about  so it must have been over a year ago. It was 6 -12  months before we saw the leaked photos of the African theme

I suppose it could just be an old reference to theUS 5810 Pirate Corsair:

BUT, the 5810 has a dark hull which contrasts definitely against its white sails, whereas the one on the 5948/9 boxes has a hull that seems to match the shade of the sails (white), and the jolly roger insignias are completely different from each other (the 5810 insignia features crossed swords which intersect behind the skull, whereas the one on the 5948/9 boxes features BONES which cross beneath a completely different skull.  To my knowledge there are no other Schooners with all-white sails.  Unless this is just a generic shape of a playmobil schooner taken and used with artistic liberty for the box art with no intention of releasing it in a new form.  I WISH though

When the 5778 Skull Pirate Ship was released, it feated a black silohuette of the then retired (correct me if I'm wrong) 5736 BlackBeard Ship in the background.  So it could be a case of just reusing a classic playmo shape in the background.  I HOPE we get a white schooner though.

Come to think of it, this retired ship's shadow was also featured on the Pirate corsair 5810 as well.

I do believe a ferris wheel was an item they at one time considered producing, though, but it turned out to be just too expensive. I reeeeally wish they would release one, though.

A ferris wheel would be easy and relatively inexpensive to produce with system X if they felt like it... just saying...  ;)

I really want a state fair theme.

But back on topic... a white schooner would be nice, too! ;D
