-
Very nice! I like their hair.
-
They look German. ;D
Arg! Cheng, if you keep doing this,
I will have to destroy my sisters speedo dad!
-
Very nice! I like their hair.
Me too! Will have to make me some! (since I missed the Gauls entirely :( )
-
so how can i make them look either very Gaul or very Germanic (but not neither)? hair? legs?
-
Works very well!

Pigtails with (Viking, sorry WoT!) horned helmets! That would do for Gauls, maybe with an amphora full of wine? Beermugs would fit the Germans better, I think.
Best,
Arnaud

Osprey is pretty good for colour plates. The general Gual warrior is portrayed with mustaches and hair spiked with lime to give them a more fearsom appearance.
Of course, fashion changed over time (not AS quickly as it does now) and it would depend upon the period you are trying to recreate. It would also depend upon the exact geographical location. However, I'm sure you're just interested in a "general" interpretation. Anyway, I'm sure your library has tonnes of information from Osprey. Book stores as well you can browse in (use your digital camera on your cell phone if you see a really good picture ;) ). You can also do a google search for osprey celts, osprey gauls, osprey vikings to get an idea of their graphics.
-
Some historical accounts of the time state:
Diodorus Siculus reported that "Some [Gauls] use iron breast-plates in battle, while others fight naked, trusting only in the protection which nature gives."
Polybius wrote an evocative account of Gaulish tactics against a Roman army at the Battle of Telamon of 225 BC: "The Insubres and the Boii wore trousers and light cloaks, but the Gaesatae, in their love of glory and defiant spirit, had thrown off their garments and taken up their position in front of the whole army naked and wearing nothing but their arms... The appearance of these naked warriors was a terrifying spectacle, for they were all men of splendid physique and in the prime of life."
Livy recorded that the Celts of Asia Minor fought naked and their wounds were plain to see on the whiteness of their bodies.
The Greek historian Dionysius of Halicarnassus regarded this as a foolish tactic: "Our enemies fight naked. What injury could their long hair, their fierce looks, their clashing arms do us? These are mere symbols of barbarian boastfulness."
-
I found a thread that you might enjoy that shows some Osprey plates:

Here is a picture from it:

thanks everyone!
many thanks to you, WM and the osprey plate too!
(very interesting 'top-knots' so I should try one but too bad our klicky earrings are oversized even for a germanic klicky :P
spiked hair?! maybe PM might come out with a skateboarder with coloured spiked hair ;)
youre absolutely correct in that I'm interested in only a general interpretation (just like my red indians, I cant differentitate mohawks from cheyennes etc)
Library? oh no....even our largest chain of bookstores do not carry Osprey...you can imagine that there's hardly anyone here interested in ancient european wars..maybe some kids wargaming on their PCs but they have no money or interest in historical accuraccy.
(I just dont want my custom to look neither this nor that nor historically impossible 8} )
-
hey cowabounga-arnaud! I thought you were kidding about horned helmets!
I just goggled and do see some kind of horned helmets but no beer mugs in any of their hands ;)
-
Cool !!! i like these klickies a lot !!!!
-
Cool !!! i like these klickies a lot !!!!
I quite heartily agree!
As they are, they could be used for either Vikings or Celts. (that, of course, might be because Vikings are Celtic - but they can be used for any of that 1000 year plus time spread)
-
I have 150 - 160 of these gauls from the funpark all still in their bags , i was planning to use them with my vikings but due to space restrictions i think they will stay in the bags until i set a roman fort etc etc/ egyptians and use them there.. might still use some in the medieval set up though....

Lucky you... i was not buying many playmobil in the 90's... so I have around 6 of such klickies, and only one bag of the DS ones... but keeping my eye on ebay for them.
-
They look good, cheng. Certainly the Romans would recognise them as barbarians and wouldn't bother particularly what sort of barbarians they were.
-
Germans, definitly! I like so much the hair and the beard... have you thinked to make some celtic custom? It could be sweet ;D

-Duke Kamehameha with a ukelele

Back to the topic of Gauls, I am actually quite surprised that the gauls didnt last long, i have always thought that they were superb klickies that can be used in wide time span from romans to medieval .....shame really i think they are really good. :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:
-

I cant seem to find the right legs for them :P
-
why dont u make some 'barbarians' ? I would like to assemble some celts? I cant seem to find the right legs for them :P
Well i have about 120 vikings + 160 gauls thats enough for me as an opposing army to my 450+ leggionaires..... :)

Hey Ace...gangsters with no shirts? Eh? Cant be italians...nothing comes to my mind :P
Do you have a picture?
-
Hey Cheng!
I think Gauls were Celts' offsprings if not Celts themselves (WoT will see to that! ;D). Maybe with nice stickers...*whistles*
BTW, are you coming to Paris or straight to London?
A.
-

-
Cheng,
You are going to see Kew Gardens and the Naval Museum (incredible oil paintings of all the old British naval battles and full of models of ships) at Greenwich while you are in London, aren't you? If your wife is into art, please don't miss both of the Tate Museums and of course the British Museum, which is so full of history. You will pick up a lot of new ideas for Speedo Dad at these museums because the British were all over the world at some point it seems.
Have a wonderful trip and a speedy recovery from the 8 or so hour time difference from KL.
Cheers, Pgal
-
;)Ythanks ;) pgal...kew gardens this coming saturday...jsut back from rainy cold annecy..nope, my wife is a shopper....oxford st alone takes a day....didnt have time to visit hamleys :P i did see lots of lego but very little playmo in geneva and london...refused to buy those ?Figures but was very tempted to buy the lego ?Figures as i dont mind getting a few of those bearskin hat redcoats but felt silly to be feeling those packs at the airport hamleys

-
Cheng,
Is this a business or pleasure trip or both? Geneva sounds like a lot of fun because of its location on the Lake. Let us know what you think of the place because neither of us have been there even though Hubby was born in Austria.
We could not afford to spend the night there with the weak dollar in 1978, so Mom and I just rode trains on our Eurail passes around Switzerland a few times and got off for a couple of lunches. Back then you could choose an all night train trip as your sleeping place instead of a hotel, and we spent a lot of nights sleeping on trains those 3 weeks. That was the only way we could afford Europe. And we did see some very interesting scenes on the rails and in the stations, especially in Scandanavia.
Enjoy the rest of your trip; we usually only shop for small artsy pieces because it is so hard to bring things home and prices are so expensive in most places outside of the US.
Cheers, Pgal

Please guys, keep on topic! :)

Back to the topic,
Though i harddly keep any of my klickies unopened, i think these gauls becuase they were on the market for such limited time they will have a significant value MISB in a few years so i am going to keep 50 1 bag unopened !!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
CAnt resist not to open and use my playmos !!!!
-
Hey Cheng!

I believe that is true...
and I know with a few stickers the will look grand! ;)
-

??? Isn't it the other way around? Celts were offspring from Gauls, either way the both had their ofspring from Halstat culture.
Like them too anyway, have none of them and going to stroll internet as long as it has to take.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauls
If you like some reading... the Gauls are basically just continental Celts... and spread into German territories too... so I think anything barbarian probably works out for most of us... as long as they aren't purple/pink
-
... as long as they aren't purple/pink

"you guys are not smiling underneath your beards?? ....look, they're blue suede shoes...not purple or pink....or RED !"
-
   Very cute!
-
Red shoes are period! :P ;)
Excellent job! :wow:
I really do love these creations, a fantastic period of history... and lovely era to customize. :)9
Now..... what about a gladiator??? Or have we all forgotten that idea! :D
-
The Romans called Barbarians every people that did not speak Latin, that gives us a wide choice, doen't it?
About shields? How do you like this one?
I used the Masai warrior's shield, as I said I would.

I've often read this expression "xxx xxxx are period"
Did you mean 'historical period' (as in 'yes, they are historically accurate'?)
or did you mean 'it stops/ends here!' ...meaning "I'll have nothing to do with this(rubbish)!" ?

please put it on a Gaul...better still, on a couple of Gauls ;D
can't wait to make a couple more Gauls myself now :P
and I'm going to customise a celtic helmet with horns
(hope its easier than customising a WW2 Wehrmacht steel helmet ;))
-
Thanks cheng!
OK, I'm not sending you any. ;-).
But you can still print this one, can't you?
Please don't make a Wermacht helmet, or at least, I wouldn't want to see it, and maybe other people wouldn't either.
Best.
Arnaud

Just look at the color of some animal hides.
If there are red animal hides, then there are red shoes... armor... helmets... ;D

I suppose some cowhides might look reddish-brown but presumebly youre refferring to red dyed animal hides (not likely on a Manchu ;) )

But what about dyes! I've seen red, blue, green leather hides of bulls.

But what about dyes! I've seen red, blue, green leather hides of bulls.
sorry, I meant Asian 'barbarians'(or ancient Celts) might not have dyed their leather shoes red during say 3000BC - maybe 500AD (not modern handbags/shoes) ;)

I was referring to cowhides, which can look very red. :)
I wasn't referring to dyes, which they had, but I do not think they used them for shoes.
I know wood workings would be dyed and/or painted,
but the only color I know for sure that was a period dye would be blue. :)
-
.....but the only color I know for sure that was a period dye would be blue. :)
thanks a lot WoT...all the more reason for me to leave Playmodad's celtic shoes blue ;D
-
 Yes, if a very eccentric Gaul decided he wanted some blue shoes,
He could make blue shoes. 8}
-
maybe they matched his eyes?
-
maybe they matched his eyes?
but definitely matched the band on his Speedo

Clearly a very fashionable Gaul... and have you noticed how clean he keeps his skin?
-
Clearly a very fashionable Gaul... and have you noticed how clean he keeps his skin?
aah..that's because he washes his speedo underwear everyday with him inside ;D
(but seriously, I wanted to put the female Robber Fi?ure's smudged face on his naked torso but his body and arms (youre absolutely right) are sparkling clean...I cant swap tattoo arms for him because the inside pin would need irreversible modification....no worries, I'm waiting for the new pirate with tattooed torso ;) )
-

Well, the Gauls did discover the making (and using) of soap.
A.

ok no metal...how about all fur + horns....maybe they existed but never lasted long enough to be discovered by historians....what do you all think?
-
I ont know about historical fact of fiction, but he is awesome!!!

That one is definitely a hero warrior of old times. Like'm 8-)
-
thanks guys, for your comments and help!
ok, this is the final horde for my shelf (but there seems to be some distraction among their ranks...but wish I can know what they are thinking :P)
-
They appear to have a sort of "mulan" among them. :toot:
-
Magnificent hoard! :wow: ;D
I love your custom klicky... And therefore can deal with the horned helm. ::) ;)
-
Cheng,
Fabulous hair and beards!
Is that a new cave woman in drag?
And maybe Uncle Sam's pants?
This gang looks quite fierce!
Speedo Dad looks as if he is the leader of the gang. Very cool!
Is this what you do to overcome the insomnia related to jet lag?
Cheers, Pgal
-
thanks everyone!
(no jetlag on the next day (saturday) surprising myself but on sunday I must have slept some 13 hours...woke up at 1pm for lunch :P)
