The 5135-ship I used in the review about the hulls & decks, has become an 18th century English Navy corvette (or frigate if you like).
I kept the original 5135-stickers plus the "fake-gun"-deck, and placed guns with black carriages on the topdeck as on the Dutch ship.
This ship too got a midbrown anchorwheel and a redbrown stearingwheel. Different is the bow-ornament; I exchanged the red one for a spare golden-coloured one from a 3940/3286.
As with the Dutch galleon "Verenigde Provinciën", the pics are bad quality and I hope to replace them by better ones soon. Plus I"ll then add a pic from an indentical 2nd English corvette, but with the name "HMS Surprise" on the stern.

@ the mods:
As the ships aren't that much customized; perhaps I should have posted this thread and the "Dutch galleon"-one in another subforum, like "collectors' corner" ?
-
ooo, another question..... the 3286 has a bit of a raised "step" at the bow of the ship adjacent to the orignal uncovered access to the forward guns. Does the 5135 still have a raised foredeck? or is completly flush with the main deck?
-
Looks like the 5135 shill has a raised foredeck (I am wondering if it is big enough to be called a forecastle),
But it looks a bit smaller then the forecastle of the 3940.
I have a question myself.
How do you attach the ensign??? ???
I have been lashing mine using rope,
but yours looks better...
More sophisticated. ;)
Another magnificent ship!
Hopefully I will get a fleet big enough to match on of you guys eventually.
Then Rutileo shall rule the seas! >:D

I hadn't otice the 5135 has a red dow-ornament... :lens:
I think its ok to leave it here Erwin, it might be swapping parts but in my book thats customising too...
In a few days you'll se my work on a few ships ;D

IMO it wouldn't be big enough to be a forecastle, as a forecastle should be accessible (have an inside), usually the galley of the ship.
btw, what is an "ensign"?

apart from a junior rank of a commissioned officer, its the flag that distinguishes the ship at the aft. Actually thats the reason for calling the officer an ensign, he is traditionally the carrier of the flag.

Better pics coming up right now! We're having some sun this morning, so better conditions for taking pics... :)
The ensign (English flag at the stern) comes with 5139 Fortress and 5140 English Gunboat. It doesn't have to be attached with a rope or piece of string, but just clips on to a flagpole.
The shape of the "forecastle" is exactly like on the 3940/3286; just the gap in the deck in front of the mast to reach the frontguns has been closed. The only difference on the upperdeck is towards the back, where the stairs to the aft/stern-castle is now part of the deckmould.
No grooves or such in the upperdeck for the guns, so the front ones just slide over the upperdeck like on the 3940 when the ship is not 100% horizontally, the movement of the ones midship on the upperdeck is somewhat restricted by the upward edges of the cargohold-hatch.

Et voilà, here we go...
They're from the 2nd English corvette, "HMS Surprise".
(the previous pics where from the 1st one in my other place)

best quality ones coming now...

flag (ensign) direction has always kinda confused me. On most promo pics of toy ships, the flags always blow aft.
In reality I would think flags would blow in the direction of the wind (which would either be at some angle traverse to the beam of the ship (coming from the side) or in a forward direction (if the wind was coming from behind blowing the square rigger forward).
However, I've observed footage of the HMS Suprise being blown forward while its ensign (the HUGE UNION JACK FLAG being flown from the spanker rigging) trails aft as the ship moves forward. My only explanation for this is there may be a vaccum behind the sternmost square sail which allows the ensign to trail behind the ship's forward direction, thereby trailing opposite the direction of travel. but sometimes the flag does also blow forward with the direction of the wind.
I find it interesting, you have your ensign blowing forward rather than the commonly-seen toy pics of people posing their ship flags trailing behind the direction of motion. (I too also usually have my flags blowing in the direction of travel/wind, not trailing backwards)
In your ship's case, the flagpole on the stern is angled backwards. with no breeze it would hang straight down as it sometimes can be seen doing when at port. It's too bad there isn't an angled flag (to compensate for the angled flagpole) that can be aimed forward (like yours is) without it looking like it's being blown upwards.
I do like your flag there though :). That's one aesthetic I love about the 4290 over the 3286: the 4290 has a flag on the stern and prominent stern lanterns (instead of the 3286's nob ornaments). So I like your transfer or parts!

Sorry, I couldn't get hold of Russell Crowe as Capt'n Aubrey, so this fellow will have to do. ;D
His legs are totally white with black shoes, they come from a redcoat-soldier (not the officer) in set 5139.
I think the completely white ones are better suited for Navy officers.

Wow this keeps getting bettr and better!! I love the aft stickers, something that I have not clue how to do, or tha patience to do... but thank goodness of Arnaud ;D And the captain is awesome!!!! :wow:
-
Erwin, I love that you decided to name tour second corvette the surprise. Your Jack Aubrey looks great too. Now you must make Killick and the Doctor (was Mathurin?)
Best,
Arnaud

 wonderful work mon capitaine.
 the surprise looks great.
;) you have to find a way to man it.
:yup: as the royal navy saillors form the original schooner are so rare and difficult to find on ebay (and so expensive) i suggest we all ask for a new ds set with 6 of them and a couple of officials.
in the patrick o'brian's master and commander series - i just finnished reading the last of the 21 books this summer for the 4th time (or was it the 5th?) - the doctor's name is stephen maturin (or esteban maturin y domanova) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Maturin.
he is a character just as important as jack aubrey.
besides being a phisician he is also a secret agent.
;) using the chimey sweeper as basis a for a custom it shouldn't be that hard to produce one (although i don't want to go that way ever or i know i'll never stop).
a violin (for jack aubrey) and cello (for stephen maturin) couls also be added.
they both play these instruments and they actually met (i think it was in minorca) during a concert.

Magnificent! :wow: :wow: :wow:
As I said before, I cannot wait for the 3135 ship to come to the US!!!
