Title: ROUGH TERRAIN FORKLIFT
Post by: flatcat on August 14, 2011, 14:35:31
Hi Everyone

This is a JCB Rough terrain forklift truck:

They are used on building sites or farms where a conventional forklift truck with its small wheels would get stuck.

These machines have 4 wheel drive, and large chunky tires to make sure they don't get stuck.

And here is mine! :D :D :D

In the cab, we can see I have added a joystick lever from a helicopter to act as the controls for the forklift:

Under the bonnet, I packed it full of weight so the machine is very heavy, but can comfortably hold the heaviest of weights without tipping:

Here are a few 'Work in progress' pics :)

Here are the two donor vehicles that were sacrificed for this project:

(http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/6139/wheelsandbmx063.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/850/wheelsandbmx063.jpg/)

Thanks to Verity (naflibomyalp) for the tractor

I felt a little bad as she had just bought a new roof for it :-[

The remains of the forklift truck after I had finished with it :sorrow:

(http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/3356/wheelsandbmx064.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/709/wheelsandbmx064.jpg/)

After dismantling the tractor, my first job I did was to paint all the parts requiring black, black:

(http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/4558/wheelsandbmx070.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/683/wheelsandbmx070.jpg/)

The only things that I haven't painted are the mast and the axle clips, as function would have been lost.

Here's how I made the flashing light:

(http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/2397/wheelsandbmx045.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/268/wheelsandbmx045.jpg/)

I got an orange light and systemx connector from the space theme, and put them together to make a beacon.
I made the protection bar from cutting up an old camping chair! :!:

The bottom of the connector was filed down so that the beacon cleared the bar.

I forgot to take a pic of the body unpainted, but here it is getting it's last coat of yellow paint:

(http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/4018/wheelsandbmx068.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/694/wheelsandbmx068.jpg/)

In the pic you can see where I have cut off the front mudgaurds and fixings for the front loader.

At the back, there was just the tow hitch, so I had to shape the front of the forklift to fit onto the rear of the tractor, and I filled in the gap at the top with that engine/winch piece that I don't know what it came off of!

I hope you like my custom

Simple?! It took me a whole week to do! :D (but perhaps that's my inefficiency!)

Well, I meant the overall look was simple as if it were a real Playmobil vehicle  :). Now that I see all the work you put into it, I can see why it took a week! Once again, nice work!

Hubby wants one of these in real life, no kidding!
In the US many people own "Bobcats" for smaller jobs on their property, but this rig would be a much better idea for rougher terrain and larger loads.
A fantastic custom....the step by step details were most helpful, Pgal

I would love one too, and any oher machine; mini digger dumper etc :P

I've got my own pallet truck that I move engines etc about with, but that's as close as I'll ever get to owning a real forklift truck

Great custom Damo. I love the choice of yellow tone. It looks like the real construction yellow of Cats and Deers.

Trust me, you do not want to own any machine, unless you use one daily/weekly. It is so much easier to rent one for the day and give it back for the rest of the year.

True, we usuually hire a digger when we need one as I know they are expencive to keep running what with the hydraulics, oil, diesel etc

Even my pallet truck needs to go in as the hydraulics have sprung a leak, and it's going to cost me an arm and a leg

Besides, I can just play with the machines at work! :P

Great vehicle Damo. If you add a small bonnet to the front of your left over forklift section you can have a dune buggy.

That's a great idea, Tim!

I was wondering what I could do with it now

It's great.  I love it...I'm so glad it was used for a better purpose (I used it to distract my next door neighbours 3 year old so he wouldn't destroy more valuable stuff ).

That roof cost me about 73p-don't worry about it.

It's a fabulous custom-well done!

Nice to know the roofs are cheap - I need to order a couple
