Title: Vikings!
Post by: Elric on August 04, 2011, 23:30:47
I sure do wish I was collecting when the Vikings were on the shelves.  Just grabbed these off ebay.  Both sets are complete but without boxes.

The vikings are going to fit good with the wolves of Melnibone!

Those are some nice sets, Elric! I'm also a little disappointed that I wasn't aware of the Vikings when they came out either. Those look like some excellent finds!

They are both great sets.  I wish they would have lasted longer in the catalogue.

I have been eyeing the longboat for awhile but finally got one after seeing five of them in Grangel's setup.

Awesome sets.

This is one of the things I have really been struggling with lately.  Our pirate collecting is on hold until the new sets come out in 2012. In the meantime we got our first (System-X, please hold the boos, I quite like it) castle and both the boy and I have fallen in love with Dragonland. Do I have room in my life (and on my shelves) for a Viking longboat and/or longhouse?

Sigh, why wasn't I collecting in 2003?

Congratulations, the Vikings are a great series. My longboat has been on continual display since I got it in 2004

You must mean the Dragon Castle (3269).  I have three of these and they are made in such a way that you can combine them to make bigger castles.  I really like it.

The other system X castle (Lion) is not customisable like that.

The only complaint I have about the vikings is that the logs used for the "longhouse" are completely undetailed!  They are link brown oblong shapes, not logs.  They really could have moulded a LOT of detail into them to make it even better.  It might be a toy, but kids don't need to have simple and crude.

Hey Wes,

No we got the Eagle Knights castle (5783) for the boys birthday. As far as I can tell it is exclusive to Toys R Us and has been around for a while.  Not a bad set, although the castle feels a little incomplete as it does not come with enough ramparts and the floors of the towers seem to be missing.  At the price ($80 CDN) I guess it is to be expected. Here is the playmodb link:

Okay.  I have a couple of those I bought used to add to the Lion Castle, as I planned on getting that one day.  However, I think I will stay away from that one now - I like the colours and the contours, but the walls are noticably shorter than the Steck walls and they just are not as expandable.  It does hold together well (Steck was changed to a second version where the wall tabs are made better but the first version of Steck won't handle being lifted and moved and put down again nearly as well).

The figures in the castle you have are nice.

I've been thinking of adding the Knight's Empire Castle but at 200$ (from Playvalue) I'm not sure it is in the budget. Even if it is the choice between that and the new Lion Knights (230$) castle won't be easy.  The walls are too short especially with all the Steck homes you have it can look silly.

I really like the figures that came with the Eagle Castle as well, good variety and a respectable assortment of weaponry. I also like that they come witha flag and a large banner.

The Vikings were a great theme!  While the ship is one of the best sets Playmobil has ever created, the two Viking structures were, in my opinion, disappointing.  They really could have made an awesome longhouse to go along with their great ship. :viking:

I agree. i love the vikings and its a shame that the fort was such badly designed and had a short shelf life . Some of the klickies were superb and far more realistic than eg the dragonland klickies . shame really as the drakkar was simply superb. Something worth mentioning is the Playabig drakkar which fits nicely with the playmobil . i have one of them and its pretty big and has a catapult on it too

I really love the Viking theme. I picked the longboat up in 2004, I think, and last summer, grabbed the longhouse at a toy store. Both sets are superb! :)

I love the vikings too.. it is a shame they never did a proper house..

Giorginetto, could you please share more pics of the playbig drakkar?  I have one, but it's all busted... I didn't find proper pics of it in Google... My dad wants to try and restore it.... and he needs pics of what it's supposed to look like..

Those viking sets are fabulous. I do hope that the relatively short life span of historical sets doesn't prevent the release of more - though it does seem to be the case sadly.
