after the Qin Dynasty (during which the Terracotta army was built),
came the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE), the golden age in Chinese history,

I'm still trying to figure out how to make their headcovers :P

				WOW! Very nice! :o :wow:
I hope to see more from this theme! :)9
 He looks amazing Cheng.

Also not to be confused with Han Solo! ;D

Don't you have a pic of these head overs?
Nice custom, my friend, although his moustache is askew.  :-[
 Best,
 Arnaud
-
				great custom!!!  :)9

-
thanks and you will WOT, much much later  :P

 and Arnaud-cowabounga,
I will look for those photos
(and ancient chinese with such "as-cute" cat-like whiskers!)
I forgot all about Han Solo...maybe he's also a 'Han' chinese, light years later :P

-
Are any of these the hats you are talking about Cheng? :)

-
				thanks WolfKnight!

yes, somewhat like the officer(?) in the second drawing (looks funny, maybe because he's wearing a toy sword :P)
 thanks still !
more like these (soft cloth caps, tied under their chins); (hello Playmogal, if youre watching, can hubby cast this(Han head cover)?
-
Excellent already. I hope you find a solution for the hair cover.

There is a white scarf  (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-05-5770) that is open on the rear. Or maybe http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-05-6200 (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-05-6200) if it can be found somewhere. It might fit better then the red one while being depicted in the last of your reference pictures.
-
the 1st one is too 'loose' (see pic) but I  dont have the older one 30 05 6200
 ...probably not available anymore
(i was going to cut (yes!  :P ) the armor to accomodate the white loose scarve you suggested..thanks micheal!)
-
I don't have any idea for such hat but, I have just found this part I've seen several times on Asian customs: http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?mode=view&partnum=30+05+9030&pics=on
Not my idea, but when you reverse it (the bow at the back), it looks really cool on warriors, IMO.
It's also available in dark pink.
Since it's been used in several sets (it's a headband for a maid), I guess it might still be available from DS.

@WoT: what is the soldier in the first picture you posted holding in his left hand? Some kind of shield I reckon, but it looks like it has arms like a bow??? Any hint?
 Best,
 Arnaud
-
Your approach is not bad but it is just too small.

The peaked helmet of the mongol warrior special/egyptians might come quite close with the peak sanded down. But then you still need the flaps. There are a few space or motorcyle helmets that could be taken into consideration but there the needed amount of modification would be much more extensive. PlayBig hairpieces maybe, somehow, too...

-
You might try the hunters/explorers cap from 3628, and in navy from 3191 and 4076, you'd have to make some adjustments but it sort of has ear flaps already... or close enough to become ear flaps...  >:D with some adjustments.  you could modify some stethoscopes for chinstraps too.

-
Cheng, are those wigs custom made?

-
				Sorry Arnaud, I don't know. ???
It does look like a bow with some sort of boss to protect the hand. :!:
 Very interesting. :)
-
				hey cowabounga-Arnaud,
I bought these maid's bows for two of my samurai(s) but I never noticed the dark pink(not bright red? :( ) one
and youre right, may be a reversed red one will look just cool on a chinese warrior....I'm a accuraccy-nut so I will make one once I convince myself it existed  ;)

and WoT, that thingy in your first picture's left hand sure looks like something meant to function as a shield but I never knew they used such a thing (except for sword fighters who use their swords' sheaths in their other hands)

-
Well these are not my photos, so I don't know much about them.
I was just trying to look up reference photos that might be the hat you were talking about.
 So I Googled it. ;)
-
what is "just too small"? Micheal?  ???
but both my prototype Han men are not wearing any caps (over their hair tied into buns)

I've examined our mongol caps (the ones with fur around) and also the blue egyptian (king's helmet)...both tall enough but not thick enough for sanding down the front section  :'(

will look at the space helmets (I've examine the ice hockey helmets already)
PlayBig hairpieces? I might need 20 ;) so I better look elsewhere  ;D
-
				hello Baron Marshall!!

...by George, I think he's got it!!!
 (the missing flaps Micheal mentioned)

....anyone has one to pose for me here? (side view please and on a chinese head if you have one!)
and the other more rounded(but not so tall) cap has an upturned flap that will look even more correct from the front :)

modified stethoscopes for chinstraps? I see youre a PM purist  ;D
I have used PVC stickers for chin straps on many of my customs, so might do that again  :P

 thanks Baron Marshall !
-
				@ PrimusPilus,
the my first Han wears an original old-type PM hair piece
while the second Han wears a standard hair piece with those jagged edges trimmed off  :P
and both of them finished with softboard pins as top-knots
-
Amazing! The similarities are remarkable! :o

-
Amazing! The similarities are remarkable! :o

 I presume you meant the red-brown hunter's cap  ;)

while waiting for a klicky to model this cap, what do you guys think about this slightly pointed eskimo headcover (in case 20 red-brown hunter's cap take the rest of my lifetime and lifetime savings :P ) ? I will have to imagine that the pointy bit is where his top-knot ends  ;)
(will have to do some cutting of course ;D)

and thanks guys...I'm glad to have posted an unfinished prototype for your opinions and ideas instead of trying to figure it out by myself....my slow and not the best possible use of available parts :P
-
Did a few mock ups this morning, cant find the other hat, but I think this one is closer anyway...

-
				thanks Baron!!
 2 more Han soldiers

....I have neither of these and will be able to digitally sculpt these first to see if I should order a bunch of these  :)

...anyone out there with the old (red-brown) hunter's cap from 3628 (a Han with a perfect side view shot please  :) )

(I have the pointed eskimo headcover and will compare with these)
-
anyone out there with this blue hunter's cap from Dinosaur Transport set?

if so, can you please pose and shoot a Han with a perfect side?  :)
 thanks in advance!
-
I have one... somewhere... hopefully I can find it today....  :crossed:

FOUND IT... personally i think the others are better...
-
thank you so very much Baron Marshall !
you cant imagine how much you've help....from now onwards, I'll ask you guys for help when developing a new custom, instead of spending months, sometimes years to finish one completely (like my koreans) but of course I work on many simultaneously so I dont really wait and do nothing until a new part/new idea comes along. sometimes I show a custom which I'm not totally pleased with but I will keep improving it and share the improvements ;)

this 'Han' hasnt got the right arms, legs and head, in fact nothing is right yet...not even his torso armour, but like i always say, the hat/helmet has the most important visual effect on the likeness of any soldier custom  ;D
-
I would say the arms and torso are pretty close.
But you are right about the helmet being most important. ;)
-
I would say the arms and torso are pretty close.

 thanks WOT!

the yellow/green polar cap seems more appropriate then the white/red-brown hunter's cap because I prefer the longer ear flaps/chin straps  ;)

since I am going to do quite a lot of cutting, maybe I have to ask our ladies for opinions and help now with photos  ;)
I can trim their sides for ear flaps but more importantly, they have the hump for their top-knot covers.
-
and how about this one ladies? if you have one (any colour), please take a side view on a male klicky head  ;D
 thanks in advance
-
might be a few days... you know to give the ladies a chance  ... but I have all of those hats... one might be hiding somewhere... I'll see if they turn up.... ;)

-
				fantastic, Baron!
you must be collecting longer than i have   :o
ok...I shall be patient for a while   :-\
-
and how about this one ladies? if you have one (any colour), please take a side view on a male klicky head  ;D
 thanks in advance

why do you need to ask only the ladies? I can show you pics of these too  ;D but it will have to wait for tomorrow... I am going to bed..
-
I have number 1 and 4 for sure. But, I won't be back home before another two weeks! Since I was away from my PM, I bought 5 Mongol warriors and 3 Crusaders blisters this morning, for company only! They will be dismantled when I get back to Paris.
@cheng: do you have a bigger picture of these genuine hats?

 Best,
 Arnaud
-
This lady doesn't have any of those to show... well I have one of them, but it's at the bottom of the claw machine.

-
Guys I think by ladies he meant the clickies that have those headresses  :P

-
oh yeah, I guess that would make sense too wouldn't it

-
why do you need to ask only the ladies? I can show you pics of these too  ;D but it will have to wait for tomorrow... I am going to bed..

 WolfKnight....WAKE UP! WAKE UP!

 @cowabounga-Arnaud;
I'll go that too(buy a little PM just to tie over our cold-turkey periods when away...what do you do when you miss you wife? is she also on this forum? ;D
 (here's another close-up)

@BB, if you dont have your kid's skill at  your claw-machine, you'll have to claw the while night...no double meaning  :P

 @tonguello; you see, I dont own many female klickies so I dont stock female hats either so I reckon its the reverse for our ladies here but maybe BB here collect more male than female klickies/parts too  8}

@Baron; we wont wait for the ladies then....please shoot whatever you have...with a cam of course  ;)
-
				hello everyone!
here's my digital customisation of the 2 hats supplied by Baron Marshall (thanks again!) and between the 2, somehow I ended up prefering the yellow one as our Baron here suggested...the loose flaps like those of a pilot with chin-strap untied  ;)

what are your opinions (try visualising them sprayed brown and black)?

(I hope I can psyche myself not to visualise our female
PM headcovers when I try to customise them likewise  :P)
-

You're in rare form tonight cheng!   You cracked me up with every one of these comments :giggle:!

 I have mostly modern klickys, so not many of these hats. And the problem with the claw machine is, she's way at the bottom, and the machine has really loud annoying music when you're playing with it that can't be shut off! So I'll go nuts before I get her out! 8}
-
				ok I'm up  ;D

Sorry I did not have time to do this yesterday...

if you need more or better pics let me know cheng
-
				no worries BB!
I'm sure the boys will return with some female parts soon  ;D
(again, I just say these things a matter-of-factly, a little worried that my sense of humour might go awry for innocent cultural/language reasons...maybe thats why the boys have grown silent  anyway if I've unintentionally stepped on some toes, please forgive me :P
-
				Hey WK!
those are great shots, thanks thanks!!
do you think no.2 or no.3 one is more suitable?
(to own practically every part, you must have more klickies than I...I thought I have too many...so now can justify buying more?!)

may I see the rear view no.3(the blue one?)
....its probably a crater so I might have to use no.2

I'll need all your help when I start to think seriously about customising japanese fighting monks  ;)
-
no 2 is ok but no 3 is better i think  ;)

-
				thanks WK!
just as I thought...a empty 'crater'
this is where their hair goes under...for now, I still wont allow putty/fillers.
I'm not used to digital customising  :P
 mine looks bad.,
but I think it might look better when I work with the real object  ;D
 what do you think, honestly?
-
That looks like no 2 Cheng, or are you actually gonna use no 3? ... I like it,  I think it can work. Sorry I have no spares to send you, I only have one spare from number 4 and a couple from number 1. I may have a lot of klickies, but not many female ones... most of them I have only once.

thanks for your vote of confidence WK!

 I'll use no.2 (no.3 would require fillers)
and also thanks for even thinking about sending me spares if you had.
I'll get them from DS (sometimes, I plan a custom, and buy say 10 of the same part just to find that it looked nothing like the drawing, or there's something on the blind side, or the actual collar is too wide etc and end up having extras of parts useless to me  :P )
at least with your 'digital' help, the chances of failure is lower  ;)
-
Didn't step on any toes here... my wife just had 4 days off... so no time to play... though I did get to buy more playmobil :) as she does like shopping... even at the toy store

-
Glad I could help, even this way cheng!!

-
				hey look what I found!
if only PM made an aviator's hat  :P
perhaps the Han chinese were earlier than the Wright brothers?  ;D
-
I could sure go for a reissue of the biplane... which would be a great place to put a new aviator cap. :)

-
What about the hunter's hat? With little modification it works great.

here is a link to a custom I made last year. Hope it helps.

 very nice tonguello!
for a moment I thought PM did make an aviator's goggles  ;D
no milliput for me for now :P

and I have very full shelves and I often cause some to novedive to the floor...any glued part would fly off on impact (one of the reasons why I stopping plastic scale modelling)
oh, tonguello if you dont mind me being honest...for a moment, your aviator's hat looked very disturbingly WW2 japanese :P

still, its a beautiful custom!

				Hey!
I've been trying this (among other stuff, see my latest posts):

I'm not sure what th black part on top of the head band was (on cheng's pic), so I figured it was just the soldier's hair...
It can be improved. I used Plastiline, so I can modify anything on this sketch before I make another with resin.
 Any comment would help!

 Arnaud
-
Is the first time I have read this thread....and was immersed in a feeling of frustration looking for a solution with the original parts  :'(
Finally, I see this pics of Arnaud and I think.....Long live the resin!! The custom alive!! ;D
-
				HEEYYY! fantastic, cowabounga-arnaud!!
this is a great way to collaborate in such challenging situations!!

youve got the angle and fitting right!  ;)
and youre right about the hair (it doesnt look quite like hair in the photos because i suspect they could have fixed false hair in front but there's a samurai bandana on their foreheads to keep their hair neatly out of the way.

and keeping with our oversized klickies' heads, your rear bund is agreeably high. (Excellent work! I must echo what malone just said!)

but I've been researching and asking myself whether the hat is actually just a soft form(cloth) over their top knots (in which case, we should make them narrower and follow the contour of a top knot unlike the actor who might have no top knot inside but suppored by a mass produced empty and exaggerated cardboard mound :P)
what is your opinion about my theory?

arnaud, how about using the 'tighter' Roman hairpiece if you can extend a longer and tighter/closer fitting chin strap (they still look good with the straps untied like an aviator who has unstrapped his cap)  :)

 and my dear malone,
I'm so touched about your frustration looking for a solution with original parts...youve already  made everything possible with your skillful moulding capabilities and yet you still share our desire for original parts wherever possible!

-
				Hi Cheng....
Alwais is possible I prefer original parts.
If tomorrow Playmobil make Greeks (for example)....I take my moulds and throw them away. ;D
-
				and Javi-Malone,
if tomorrow you mould Japnese heads, I will have to chop all my samurai heads off  ;D
-
Actually, I do think these were made of cloth (felt or leather, maybe?) and not hard metal. I didn't know about the hair knot but I guess it explains the strange shape. I'll make it narrower, then. The chin strap will be very hard to make in Plastiline, no matter the hair piece I use.
Another problem to solve before the mass production phase!
 Best,
 Arnaud
-
				mass production Arnaud??  :P
so not so tall either...just to cover an imaginary topknot  :)
are there anybody out there interested??  ;D
it doesnt have to end with narrow chin straps...i mean just a longer broad taper hanging down loose...not wrapped around chin!  ;)
if youre mass producing, i'm not going to reshape any remale klicky's head cover
