Hi all, Wesley Myers' recent thread on his newly aquired collection of steck gave me the idea of this thread. It a reference to all the old steck houses and how they look once assembled. I am not showing any klickies or accessories that go with them, maybe another time, so here we go:
3440 Tailors house

The rest a bit later ;)

This is a great reference, Panos! - I could have done with this when I got my houses and disn't have a clue how they went together! 8}

Damo :)
Thank you Damo, the idea just came to me this morning. it seems eo many of us have no clue how they are put together, or what walls the original houses had. Its a good opportunity to do this :)
-
Yes, very good idea!
-
And I can use this thread as a list on what to find and buy on E-bay ;D Thanks!
(My bank account says 'O-ow')

Thank you!!!

This is great Panos, I had no idea that the houses came in so many different colors! I love them all!

Joe
They really are nice!
What I don't like is the whole upstairs that is not accessible... That has been changed on the new ones, however, by adding the open gable end [url]http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-07-0730/url].
I don't think I'll add that the medieval houses, though, well maybe. LOL I was thinking of adding the double roof open section but it would be cheaper to just add the open gable at the end and then have the old ones like the new ones and a full roof when you look down but the backs open on them. Well, we'll see.
I know the girls want to build the 'Princess Village' with them so they can play. Sorting is taking a long time, but these are special so I want to make sure they are correct.

On these houses yes.
I still need plans for the Inn, Town Hall and the Museum. 3447, 3448 and 3449 respectively.

Drool! Great idea, thanks!
-
Great idea Panos, :thanks:
I have some parts for the tailors house but didn't know what was missing. I never realised that the steck wall with the bottle glass window was part of that set.

I realise now I miss the chimney... :( Oh well... back to ebay...
more of the houses in a while ;)

I never get tired watching over and over steck houses, they are indeed the best think that playmobil ever created in my opinion and as a matter of fact one of the best toy lines/ construction system. i bought my first steck in 1978 and still use it. the bakery i bought in 1981 or 1982 i cant be sure and its still 100% intact all stickers and everything 100% . I have over 40 steck houses i hope to get anotehr 40 in the next decade and create a double the size castle and cirty from the current one . Unfortunatelly there is never enough steck !!!!
-
I can't agree more with you George!! My first steck house was the pottery one... so much fun...
Ok here is the next house: 3448 Medieval Inn....
Look at the attached pics first at the end of this post... this set became available in two editions... one with green stickers and the other with an orange and blue sticker... he one with the green stickers had a green robin-hood-like hat on the sign white the other one had a crown. I have the crown one, but the building of both houses is the same. apart from a little detail... the first house (green stickers) had a chimney, the second one had only a window on the roof... as I was putting this back together I remembered I joined the chimney and window openings ... but now I see I miss another chimney... :(
Oh well, here are the pics:

I wish I started collecting back then. Had no idea about this theme at the time. :( I wonder if there is any chance that PM will re-release them. ???
Joe
-
I think if the Bakery goes over well in this year's DS catalog that there is a good chance they will continue releasing the sets one at a time. They did that first colored red house after a campaign by collectors, and then followed up with blue and yellow on their own initiative. What I would most like to see next is one with the squared roof like the Museum. That would make all of the hard to get roof parts available again.
-

Joe
You can get most of the parts for the houses/buildings separately and put them together. A few of the parts are hard to get (ie signs, museum roof, front of blacksmith) but the release of the bakery alone covers so many of these pieces so you can start putting them together.
There is nothing saying you can't be creative and start making your own buildings!
Mix and match pieces together to create really neat constructs.
I think that's what I may do next. Try to make some of my own designs and order the extra parts that I will need (ie roofs, windows, etc).

I had a few ideas about that the past year or so ;D

So if someone (let's say for the sake of argument, me) had a sign with both green and orange on it would that mean there could have been a version with green AND orange decals?
Or could that indicate that I have two inns?
I have a little robin hood hat.

you mean two different signs? or a single sign with one side being green and the other orange?
---edit---
Look what I found

so obviously, the set came with two sets of stickers... and you could choose which ones to use.

Yes it is orange on one side and green on the other.
I found out the Ratskeller sign goes with the Rathaus, by the way.
I have another set of signs I don't know what they go with though.
One is the banner sign and it reads, "Restaurant, aux caves de l'hotel de ville"
the other is the hanging shield sign that has the Nrnberg coat of arms (half yellow tih eagle and the other side ride and white diagonal stripes. and on the other side of the hanging shield is the blue background with the yellow bird with man's head on it.
Would those be for another inn?
----------------------EDIT------------------------------------
Wait! George has that hanging shield in front of his museum.
So it's the Restaurant sign that I have no idea where it goes.
-
I love that Inn, what a great way to make use of multiples of the wall section with the door in it.
-
This thread is a great idea, Panos! :)9
One small remark: shouldn't the Pottery be equipped with a sign too?
http://www.collectobil.com/catalogue/catalogue.html
And I like your Tabard Inn a lot, I think I'm gonna copy it  ;D
Personal idea: I would exchange the framework-door & window on the ground level in the middle with a stone door & window, because the structure above it are stone windows; a wooden structure wouldn't support the stones above normally.

Well, the Restaurant banner should have the same meaning / use as the "Ratskeller"-one we talked about in the other thread (a tavern/restaurant in a basement), because "aux caves de l'Hôtel de Ville" is French for "in the cellars of the Town's Hall".
Now I'm explaining French to a Canadian... 8} :P
Btw, "police-station" in French is "hôtel de police"... I had to laugh about that one the 1st time. Sofar I never had to stay a night in such a hotel. 0) ;D

But I have two separate signs. Surely Playmobil would have only put one plastic sign in a set and not more than one?

Could you take a pic to show what the "hotel"-sign looks like?
If there are 2 signs of the same shape in a set, that would be weird indeed...
Normally there are just different stickers with different languages.
I'm not 100% sure what Geobra used as french translation for the "Ratskeller"-sign, but "aux caves de l'hôtel de ville" seems accurate & likely to me.

Okay. Here are some pictures.

Here is a picture of the interior ceiling and how it is in this one. I am presuming it is correct (?).

I have not included the accessories in the pictures. I believe I have all of them and the figures for each house, though. When I have everything sorted I will take pictures, like I did the guardhouse.
You will notice this one is put together a bit different than the box art image. It is glued though. Yes, I can take it apart. The stuff was glued with 3 types of glue I have found. The most common is from an hot glue gun. There was the white glue for the Baron's Battle Tower and some of the pieces were glued with model glue. The model glue is pretty hard to get apart! Hot glue is pretty easy.

Thank you for the suggestion Erwin, I very good idea to change the wall piece :)9
I took the pic of the pottery home in a hurry ... the signs were in another box... I'll add them ;)
Wesley, I see now that I have both the ''Ratskeller'' and ''Rathaus'' signs, so your placement and thought is excellent!
I am not sure about the attic floor... ??? I'll look into it, but can you also please add your 3444 pics here as well? thank you!
-
Wesley The attic floor of the Town Hall is correct!!!
I realised I miss some pieces from the rest of the houses, as well as the thingy that the pottery sign can be hang by, and two chimneys... I rushed to ebay and found the pieces... more pics when the missing pieces arrive...
-
I hope to own all of these some day. ;)
-
oh i missed this thread!
anyway thanks for the pics Panos! - it's great to see all the sides of these houses - they're more beautiful than i thought...
i had never seen that window on a steck room (3442 Blacksmith) - is that piece unique?
playmobil seems to be the only toy brand to ever produce a line of medieval houses for kids (just like it happened with the victorian theme) - that was a very good taste of them - I bet not only kids liked them when they were available back in the day, no wonder nowadays they're so sought after.
Too bad they're long gone :-\

Yeah, too bad, its even worse they show up on ebay in infuriating prices... I bought a city guard house a long time ago, payed 120 euros and it was sooo used, the connection points so loose, and the pieces extrememly yellow... the pic was very misleading...
Luis, window are you refering to? the black bars window? thats very common in all steck houses.

Yep, that confirms it: these have the same meaning, just different languages (German & French).
If 2 such signs came with the "Rathaus", maybe the previous owner had a spare one and put the French sticker on it, or there was a 2nd sign added in the box by mistake in the factory.
(http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6007/5979594857_8ac946a036_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/27296563@N06/5979594857/)
That is historically correct: the "Rathaus"-sign upstairs, and the "Ratskeller"-sign or "Restaurant aux caves de l'hôtel de ville") on the ground level (in reality basement/cellar-level, but I assume you're not gonna make a hole in your floor or table ;D )

I could use some help with the body colours of the figures that originally came with the sets.
It is hard to see on the box cover images for some (ie the 3443 Barn - what colour of torso does the farmer have?)
Okay, questions:
3443 - Torso colour farmer
3447 - torso of man sitting
3448 - leg colour lady hanging out of window (red torso, white arms)
- torso colour of barkeep
Did colours of figures change for the various versions?

Maybe if you put it in red I would have noticed it ... naw, I doubt it, I probably still would have missed it ...
I thought you were refereing to how the figure colours stayed the same from release to release. (Still can't find my Collector's Guide - wife "claims" she didn't see it ...) Oh wait, now she says she did "see it somewhere". Yay! She just found it. (from where she hid it ...)

These are lovely photos of some very lovely buildings! Thanks for the primer on Steck which is so informative for us non-Steck collectors. The variety of uses is also interesting as they had to have a separate building for each activity back then because structures tended to be much smaller.
It is fun looking at these buildings after having spent many months in Europe seeing the real thing in so many different places. Brings back a lot of wonderful memories.
Cheers, Pgal

Sir Wolf is spot on as usual ;). These are the colors of the original klickies . Actually this thread has helped me fix some errors in setting up the 3447 signs and its been very helpful in ensuring that i got all the steck houses right in my mediaval set up, i may have added extra klickies and items but all the original klickies and items are there ( i hope ...) The steck houses are simply superb all of them and to think they were ALL available ( well exc the pottery , musuem , train station ) including the two first castles back in 1977 is amazing. The 3666 is simply the bext ever castle than can be expanded in so many ways. The ( probably required for financial reasons ) switch to system x and the clip system probably reflects on todays' customer's preferences and the market conditions , however just looking at these houses and comparing them to the current unrealistic cheapish castles ( sorry fo rhte strong words but that is the case ) they are a world apart. I am glad i invested a lot in my steck collection and have managed to set my mediaval city/ castle ( ugly though  ) , and there are still lots of steck parts i havent used and houses ( no space as usual ) . My dream is to buy more steck and one day set up a twice as big City and castle, BUT withiut twice as many klickies so it looks more realistic. And to have more steck houses in it , as I always preach
' There is never enough Steck '
;D
-
Hmmm I still have not posted the remaining houses... tower prison, town hall, museum... am I forgetting any?
---edit ---
and guard room. since Wesley posted pics of the town hall here, I wont be adding them
-
Wonderful thread ! Thx for the great pics
-
Thanks for bumping this up Rene... I really need to take those pics :-[
-
Maybe we should sort and organize photos of all of them and make a separate sticky thread?
Maybe building/assembly guides?
I took lots of pictures for a guide on 1st vs 2nd generation steck parts and how to identify parts as original or not as I fear with the new parts being available there will sadly be some people out there who will misrepresent things to make a profit. (in short lie, cheat and steal)
-
Wes : Great idea & sounds like fun

Yes thats a great idea. 2nd generation steck parts have small bumps to fit tighter together, whereas 1st generation dont, and usually after a lot of playing they dont keep tiht anymore. Of course, a building like that being more than 20 years old does not worth it. I had bought a city guard house some years ago and even though first generation steck and complete,it was falling apart... not worth it.
Martin Milner has made some really useful step by step building guides for the steck castles. You propose doing the same with the houses?
-

Depending upon the part, I've actually noticed several versions of 2nd Generation Steck pieces. It is obvious they kept adapting and improving things as years went by. It would be interesting to talk with someone who was involved in the development process as to why they did the changes they did within the 2nd Generation pieces.
Martin Milner has made some really useful step by step building guides for the steck castles. You propose doing the same with the houses?
I thought we could. That way people with parts could put them together easier or make custom houses themselves from the Steck stuff they have or be inspired to get some Steck buildings.
The Steck medieval buildings really are beautiful and it shouldn't just be for collectors to enjoy them - children should be the ones enjoying them.
-
This sounds like a great idea. There are other differences too - like older doors not needing the separate hinge clips.

I have all the serie boxed (3440 to 3450 except the 3449 museum)....so I can help with pictures....please le tme know if you are interesting,

Wow - I'd love to see all the pictures on the boxes! The sides art especially. As well as the back art. Even on Playmodb.org and Collectobil the pictures are few and far between ...

2nd generation steck parts have small bumps to fit tighter together, whereas 1st generation dont, and usually after a lot of playing they dont keep tiht anymore
are you sure? I did check on my 3445 prison tower I had for Christmas in 1977 and there are the "little bump". I bought few years ago the 3447 Rathaus boxed (the polystyrene is mint) with the instruction sheet and 100% complete for something like 40€...and there are also the "little bump"...what I want to say is that this guy who sold the 3447 didn't want to make money because of the price, and he had no other Playmobil to sell...
does the problem could be from the mold? may be the really first generation was with "little bump", with time "little bump" in the molds were damaged and they were change later, but some parts were made and put on the marketl with no "little bump"....when they did see the problem they changed the mold and so the "little bump" came back....
I say that but I'm really not sure, it's just an hypothesis...

I have no clue :eh?:... We can only speculate and speculate endlessly... but I am pretty sure my very first steck, which was also the tower, but bought in 1988, does not have the ''little bumps'' ...and still ties very well together, but I did not dismantle it all the time while playing. the guard house I got is a 1981 mould, does not have bumps, and all pieces are so badly yellowed, it even feels very weird in touch. certainly not worth it as a ''collectors'' item...

I will take picures of the boxes. I have the v1 and v2 version of the tailer house (the second version in wrap) and of the inn....below the pictures of the 3440 version 2
-
the first picture show the way to assemble the house....this is very usefull for kids...
the second and third pictures show you the 344x and 3450 building....the second version of the tailor house 3440 and of the prison tower 3445 are not on the pictures
-
THANK YOU!!!
I would love to see the back of the boxes too.
Are the pictures different from the v1 to v2 boxes?
(I would imagine so as this shows so many children and they weren't available 'till 1980.)

yes they are, the box v2 shows the polystyrene whereas the v1 shows something like that (3444)...
I remember when I was 6years old I was using the pictures of the kids to built my tower and not the sheet instruction....It was a good idea to do something like that....and now system X are what they are...difficult to assemble for a kid (the red and yellow parts only) :shhhh:...but this is not the subject of this thread
