Welcome to the Marketon Jousting Tournament Pre-Game Show.
I’m Vanidel, and this is Sir Edward of Snooks, the five time Joustinarod Champion who is joining me to provide an insider’s look as the Joust progresses.

It’s looking to be a great Tournament this year Vanidel, with many knights seen at the Winterhaven Joust joining some new faces from across the world. The knights have been practicing the last few days, but are taking their rest break before the Opening Ceremonies tomorrow.

With the knights off the field we should be able to get a look at the jousting grounds and maybe a few behind the scenes interviews with the event staff. First though lets take a look at the Marketon Jousting Grounds, known locally as the Marketon Tilt.

As you can see the Tilt is a purposely built competition ground. With jousting becoming more and more popular it’s made sense to build these grounds here in Marketon, the neutral crossroads of Pavelonia and Sweetwater.

We’re out here at the tilting wall Sir Edward, can you take us through the basics of a match?

Sure thing Vanidel, it’s a pretty straight forward affair. Each knight will hold his shield in his left hand, that being closest to the wall and the opponent as they pass left shoulders. He will hold his lance across the back of his horse’s neck with the goal of striking the opponent with the tip of the lance.

From the point where we are standing the knight would be riding directly towards us on this side of the tilt wall from the far end. His opponent would be starting off from just to our right and they would meet somewhere close to the center This should be close to directly in front of where we will be sitting on the grandstand side, while the Marshall of the Lists who will be acting as judge will be directly opposite us on the judging stand.

The man with the horse there is going against the usual direction of movement isn’t he Sir Edward?

He is indeed Vanidel, that’s the Groundsman out smoothing down the track after the last practice sessions. The horses can really tear up a surface, and the Groundsman must go out and smooth things down every so often to keep the track a good surface for the continuing rounds.

Perhaps I can get a word with him, and maybe hear a thing or two about how the knights have been looking in practice so far.

Hello Groundsman! It looks like you’ve got quite the contraption there, it must be hard work keeping things running smoothly around here.

Quite the friendly horse you have there, he’s doing a fine job of pulling the smoothing contraption about.

Certainly Vanidel, we’re quite pleased with how well things are looking. We’ve had no problems with rule breakers or malcontents, just good clean fun.

Could you give us a brief run down on how scoring will be calculated for the Marketon Joust?

Yes of course, it’s not too difficult. There are two ways to win a match either by unseating your opponent, or by being the first to score 3 points. Points are scored by striking your opponent in some way. One point is scored for a hit to the shield, two for a strike to the body or head, and 3 for an unseating. A miss scores nothing of course.

What happens if there is a tie in points when the 3 total is reached, with both having 3?

Well in that case the match continues with additional runs. The first to get a single point ahead of their opponent after the 3 mark is reached will win the match. Some matches are quick with an unseating the first run out, others can take 6 or 7 runs to get a clear winner. I expect we will see all sorts of lengths with as many matches as will be played this Tilt.

How many matches will there be?

Well each of the 32 knights is part of a group of 4 and will play each of his three opponents once, taking a total of three rounds to do so. That makes 48 matches for the Groups phase, broken into 3 rounds. Then we move to elimination rounds with the top 16, followed by the top 8, the top 4, and then the Final Match. That’s a total of 15 matches in the Elimination Round. So 63 matches over the course of the week.

That’s a lot of matches, and multiplied by the number of runs it will be a lot to keep track of.

It is Vanidel, but it will go quickly and we will be at the final match a week from now.

Sure am Vanidel. Shouldn’t be too tough, but there’s some serious reserve seating this time around and some Very Important Personages attending. The High King of Pavelonia. The King of Sweetwater and their Ladies, plus King Esmond of Salish and his Lady all on the top platform. With visiting Royals from all over the world on the middle platforms.

And this back platform here to the right?

That one is set aside for the Squires and Knights who aren’t in active play or warming up. They’re a pretty well behaved group. It’s those Royal types you have to keep an eye on…

Wow, Tim. Wonderful job of capturing exactly the way those announcers for pre-game shows always sound! I could just hear them as I was reading it, in their too-perky little voices. And I love the way everyone kept repeating the names and slogans of the sponsors over and over. I thought I had spotted a few jungle juice posters!

And the.... "stadium" (I can't think of the right word at the moment. ???) looks great, love that it has a concession stand!
