Back in 2004 I wanted to start collecting the shops that were released just then. I bought a few (the Bakery and the Post office), but then my dear sister spoilt that project by buying me the 3666 Large Castle - and that project kept quite busy for a while.
Last year I saw all these shops coming on Marktplaats and Ebay and started buying them. I got some spareparts for shops from my sis (bought 2 more bakeries just for the shop) and bought some from the DS.
And this is what I have now as a single street
-
The details inside "Emma's Laden" - or a Winkel van Sinkel as we would call it.
It sells everything from Potatos to suncream
-
Next to that is the Bakery ...
This is one of the first shops I bought ... I really like it!
-
Then comes the butcher - one needs something to put on the sandwhiches ;).
I bought this set only last year and was really amazed about the details. Strings of sausages, the woodblock and butchers knife. It's all there ...
-
And then the hairsalon. Again I was amazed about the set - the details and all.
Few remarks though: I thought that a salon with only a single chair is really a sorry afair (so I bought a second set). And the metallic strips of the hairdryers (or whatever those things are called) are too stiff. They keep dropping off :-[ Perhaps I should use some glue ...
-
The postoffice is a complete seperate building - unfortunately, I don't have any pics of it (yet). I also bought the new cafe and that's now in a corner. I had hoped it would have been possible to attach it to the shoppingstreet, but it doesn't as it isn't System-X. The same goes for the harbour. I had hoped to add it, but that doesn't work.
And for the future ...
Well, I also have the bank and the flowerist.
The Flowerist is giving me some problems. The lay-out doesn't fit the type of shops I am using. I am still trying to figure out how to get it inside a building to my satisfaction. Still not sure how to do it.
The German DS has just released a animal shop that I really want: (http://demandware.edgesuite.net/aabe_prd/on/demandware.static/Sites-DE-Site/Sites-Catalog/de_DE/v1308294018935/imagesOnline/products/6221.jpg)
And then I have some other ideas as well - I really want a bookstore as well!
A few months ago I bought a very incomplete Headquarters (but complete enough for my purposes). I still need some extra parts that have already been ordered but haven't arrived yet. But to give you an idea of what it will look like ...
-
It's all now on a single shelf looking splendid. But now I am thinking of turning it into a sort of square or Plaza.
Best part of it is that I can add all sorts of klickies to itt, whatever the theme. A police officer can be added just as easily as a number of clowns.
A ambulance ? Just add a emergency and it can be included.
I really love this theme  - it's sooooo flexible ...

Oooh you've done what I've always wanted to do!
I've never seen the shops put together like that - they look really great :)9
I just love the fact you can buy little shop scenes, and they come with the sign to go on the building as well
Damo :)

I've been looking at your pics and your comments as you wrote them CountBogro and I must say, as someone who does not collect this theme, or have ever any delings with it, that this is a most impresive set up!!! So many little details, everyday lofe projected in playmobil!!! I love it!!! I did not know so many items existed, and the buildings are sooo great!
Thank you for sharing this great part of your collection!!! :wow: :wow: :wow:
-
You've created a great row of shops there, Mark, and I look forward to seeing your development plans come to completion. With all those shops, though, you'll need a fire station!
One thing that attracted me to Playmobil was the detail of the sets, particularly the little details, such as the butcher's knife and chopper (I've forgotten the proper name for it).
And hairdryer is the word you were wanting, Mark, although over here in the UK they tend to have a hood which goes over the top of the customer's head.
Of course, your 3666 can have a place in this too, as the centre piece overlooking the flourishing shopping area you're creating. You could call it the Castle Square Shopping Centre.
-
Thanks for the kind words.

That's actually the thing I meant :-[ Those silvery strips go inside the hood. But refuse to stay there :-\

It could, if I had the space to put it ... Mu current castle takes up the entire diningtable and there's absolutely no more room to put the shops around it. Actually, the shelf I use for the shops is actually a few millimeters too short. The pavement sticks out a little bit ;D

And don't forget, you also need a police precinct to ''serve and protect'' ;)
-
Wow, some of these shops are totally new to me - they look great! I love the look for that DS pet shop, it would make a great addition to your street :)
-
I love these  what a wonderful street.
I would like to borrow this idea for my street at Kirkbean Exhibition - I've always thought the seperate shops seemed strange.

The thing in the hairdressers set (with the stickers that fall off) is called a mobile hair processor or steamer! - or so I believe! :)

What a wonderful job, Mark. I am not that familiar with System X, so I had no idea that you could attach the shops in that way! It is super and so many details to keep it interesting. You see something new all the time.
I got that hairdryer part in an eBay lot and had no idea what it was from . . . I thought it went with the space theme, some kind of torture device or brain washer.

Great looking shops Mark. I think with a flower shop you aren't going to be able to keep those shelves together the way they are in the set. Flowers would be a good thing for a kiosk, or an open corner. More like the Victorian series than the modern shop ones in layout.
-
Mark,
You have done a wonderful job connecting the shops and making them come to life! The pet shop looks promising, too. :) :) :)
It is hard finding a building that can handle a lot of shops. I bought five 3988's and am combining them into a shopping boutique. The last two large floor baseplates should arrive next week, and allow me to finish the upper floor. System X can handle shops like this, but finding enough parts is a challenge.
It is so entertaining playing with shops and the Klickies making the rounds. So glad PM still offers these kits. The hair salon is a tough find these days. On my wish list is anyone is about to get rid of one.
Cheers, Pgal

They look really great! I want them all. ;D Here we go with another theme. I've been looking at these for a long time, but I think you've pushed me over the edge!
-
They look great! I don't know about anyone else but I would call them a parade of shops or in the case of my geography teacher a crescent of shops (no-one in my class knew what he was on about so he had to bring one up on google earth :-[).
Anyway, joining them together is a really cool idea. :yup:

A time for vertical thinking, Mark! You convert the castle dungeons into a shopping area, then the shops are on the dining table and the castle is on a board supported on pillars above them!
-
You could make escalators from the construction conveyor belt 8-)
Damo :)

"Parade of shops" was a term that came to my mind, although I think it tends to refer more to a row of shops in the suburbs, often built to go with a housing estate. I guess a "crescent of shops" is what they'd call it in Bath - a posh parade of shops! Mind you, looking up "crescent of shops" on Google images, they just seem to be a curved parade of shops. ???

Be my guest - there's no copyright or something like that ;)
Only, if you do, I want to see the pics

At least not easily - but I am working on a few ideas. This new shop from DS might give some options:

As for the name. Here in the Netherlands we just call it a shopstreet ("winkelstraat") ... Perhaps I should add a streetname - something like "PB Head street"

Lovely! You could add apartments on top of the shops! And don't be afraid to make some diversity, In real live two shops would never look the same. DS germany also released a new shop building this year.
I've been thinking about something similar, but never get around to buying the building.I always end up buying more steck houses .
-
Parade of shops? ??? That must be a British term? I've never heard it before. Around here a row of stores is a strip center or strip mall.

I've never heard of either of those terms. I'd have thought that maybe certain areas of Las Vega might have strip malls. :)
-
My grandma used to live in an appartment in Spain which was purpose built for holiday/second homes. The row of restaurants, bars and shops there was known as the strip...I guess that's why-it came from America. We just used to think it was funny. Going on holiday to Spain only to go and have scampi and chips from an English run cafe down at the strip!
-

If that was here, we would think it was in the right light district ::)

Hmmm, in the UK it would be the red light district. How different life is in The Netherlands from the UK!
-
Nice display of shops! Do you have the shelf hanging on the wall? It's difficult to find places to display things :)

 It does sound funny when you think about it!
Well, whatever you call it, I want to make one in playmobil too, now. ;D Ebay, here I come!

Does this answer your question ;)

erm ... the shops or the red light district ???

very nice to see someone make a row of shops with these sets. You did a great job on setting them all up
Thanks for sharing

Love that shelve!

 The shops, I mean!
-
Yes, that answers it well. Thanks for posting the photo!

I always thought the shops looked more like an American strip mall when connected (versus individual shops). It is very common here to have them as one connected building with all the same architecture and colors, similar signs, usually one story, with lots of parking in front. They are built to service local housing developments in modern suburbs. Very American, and I hate to say it, very boring (strip malls that is, not your set up--I like your street very much). :)
-
Funny it really had never occurred to me that this was an american thing. Strip malls seem totally normal to me, every store I shop at isin one, except walmart.

That is what we call a parade of shops in the UK.
