I recall that each set is produced 100.000 times if I am not mistaken...

hmm...but why is then one set "rare". might that be that one set was produced for a couple of years 100.000 times and another just one year ?

How long it was available may be part of it. How many people still want it, and how many are willing to part with the one(s) they have are also part.
Lots of people want Steck castle parts, and people who have Steck aren't going to sell theirs - plus they want more. Since it's no longer produced the demand increases without any more supply, and the price goes up.

All right , I'm gonna have to ask it, even if that makes me sound dumb...What on earth is Steck? I keep reading about it but no idea what it is. :-[

System x is the newer building system, used for the school, hospital, a lot of modern houses and buildings. The x refers to the little x-shaped holes on the red and yellow connector pieces, I believe.

At one time Playmobil used to produce a run of 10,000 of an item and when this ran out do another production run if sales justified it.  Now, however, they produce smaller quantities and more often, again if sales justify it.  Holding large stocks of finished is expensive.

Yes thank you Gordon 10,000 was the number I was looking for, and I was so sure you had reposted that comment before, but I could not remember if it was 10,000 or 100,000. So I was wrong!

i just read in the playmobil book that the castle ghost when it came out sold 320 000 in one year. steck castles are not rare items. at ebay there are tons of them. i think the number of 100.000 is more realistic than 10.000 - just guessing

well 10,000 in one production. then another 10,000 when the stock is finished, then another 10,000 and another 10,000... and so the story goes...

I now have a vague remembrance that someone in here said, but cannot recall who, that 100,000 is the limit usage of each mould playmobil uses...

Wolf : when you talk about the moulds i find this hard to believe. just think of all the parts that you need several times in one set or the basic steck parts like:

http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30%2007%206100

the quantity of 10.000 for boxed sets makes sense when you say they started with 10.000 then wait for the feedback / orders of the shops and then make another 10.000 or stop producing when the sales are too low. again just guessing

hmmm you're probably right... perhaps they create a new mould once the one they have exceeds its limit... i try to remember where we discussed this before but can't seem to find it...  ???
