Title: Asian Animal Enclosures - Revised
Post by: Tiermann on March 08, 2011, 03:38:03
I posted a review of the Asian Animal Enclosures set 4852 (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=7103.0) recently, but felt the enclosures were too small and didn't make as much sense as I would like.
So here is my enlarged and revised set.

First is the revised tiger area. I have used the cave rock from 4172 - Brachiosaurus in Rocky Territory (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4172) as a cave for the tigers.
I've also enlarged using some rockies piled up to make a wall replacing the bamboo fence.

OK so toucans aren't Asian, but I really like them and they always make things look so tropical. It probably escaped from the South American exhibit next door. :D

Here is a view down the walkway

Here is the new Panda exhibit. I thought the Chinese looking wall section made much more sense with the Pandas than it did with the Orangutans so I've used it here. There will be new bamboo plants later this year in Germany, so perhaps these plants will be replaced at some point.

For the Orangutans I've created a new space. I've used a couple of different older fence types. The tree as you see is much bigger and better suited. I've used the lighter grey rocks since the waterfall piece was never released in the dark grey.

To fill in an empty spot I used the Penguin set from Toys R US I just got, but have added lizards-salamanders. Their size is a better fit for a small exhibit like this one I think.

To finish up here is a view from the Japanese Garden back through the Torii Gate towards the Asian area.

I'm pretty happy with the way this all turned out. It takes up an area about 3 by 4 feet.

It looks great, Tim! Isn't it amazing how much room zoo layouts take up? The tiger exhibit is great, so beautiful and green. And you had the same thought as me about the chinese-looking wall; it is much better for pandas! The Japanese garden really adds a lot to the setup. Magnificent!

BTW, toucans may not be asian, but it's very playmobil-esque to mix these things up a bit.  :P They aren't nearly as good with this as they are with historical accuracy.

Great zoo Tim! :wow:
Can you answer me a question,
Is it possible to combine multiple of these pieces to form a wall?
http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-51-8140

And would the top design fit?
So it looks something like this:

And could we have a view from the back of the wall? :)
Thanks in advance! :wow:

WoT - check my review linked in the first post. There are more images of the wall there. The answer is basically no, the ends aren't compatible and the back is unfinished looking. Here I've used one section of lower regular wall to extend a bit to the left but that only works on the one side.

Thanks Tim,
The back does look fairly bad. :(
But is it right that the two system X slots on the back of this wall line up?

No i think the ones on one side are angled.

Correct, you can see from the top view that the one end is angled. There is that monkeys sculpture on the piece as well, too many of those could look odd. You may be better to get the roof sections and use them on the white stone wall pieces like 30 23 4520 - Wall, medium height, stonework (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-23-4520) instead. Or on grey or cream too I suppose. Actually the cream in the vacation house would look pretty good with those roof pieces.
If you are thinking of Asian buildings be sure to look at Brubil's Asian garden from the last LuxPlaymoDays. at Klickywelt (http://www.klickywelt.de/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=42005&sid=810515fedcc927f10313f7a7855fc3a7)

BTW, does it drive anyone else crazy that the monkeys are in the wrong order? The speak-no-evil monkey is in the middle.  ???

A wonderful display and great photos Tim
Now I'm wondering whether the wildlife park I have planned should be a zoo instead!   ::)

That depends on your types of animals.
I like the African plains animals all together in a big open space (except the lions of course).
That's very wildlife park, where others like the panda are better suited for a more controlled environment.

Those are wonderful enclosures and photos, Tim.  They all look so open and spacious and suitable for the animals, epsecially the tiger and the panda ones. With the bamboo the latter will look better still.

Maybe Playmobil should give you the responsibility for designing the enclosures for future zoo sets.

The order of the 3 monkeys seems to change in different sculptures:

Hm, you're right. Interesting. I have usually seen them in the order of the saying they represent, "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." That order seems to make the most sense. But it's not really a big deal, I guess.
