Title: The chronicles of Mittland Part 02 Time of the dragons

Chapter I.

Eighteen years passed since the murder of the five rulers. Much changed in this time. ARTRAC converted his plan to the act to bring the kingdoms under his rule immediately after he has returned from the High Castle. At first ARTRAC's troops attacked MITTLAND. After fourteen months of fight his soldiers took the capital of Mittland and the lily castle. The yellow dragon, the coat of arms of the highlord ARTRAC displaced JURON's lilies.

Also in the other kingdoms confusion prevailed after the death of the kings, and ARTRAC profited from this and got his military use. Thus the South realm fell only eight months later, and the Sea-country followed after only further five months. The soldiers of the beaten realms were disarmed, and lords from the North realm took over the old countries.

Only the Mountain realm under the guidance of queen SELLINA, NIHIR's widow, offered embittered resistance to the kite soldiers. ARTRAC's men tried to take the mountain fortresses of the Cold mountains over one year long, but they failed. The walls were too high, and the resistance of the mountain people were too large. So ARTRAC had to give himself beaten.

After nearly four years of continuous fighting highlord ARTRAC collected his soldiers and began to arrange his kingdom again. For this reason he met his lords in the kite hall, his throne hall. His first act was to be crowned in a great ceremony to the highestlord.

He remained simultaneous the highlord of the North realm in addition.

He appointed the lords TREMOR and DRAC as highlords. This was his first official act as the highestlord. He gave them as kingdoms the Sea-country and Mittland. Thus he recompenced for their loyalty and secured himself these also for the future.

They prevailed with hard hand over the population and raised high taxes. Arbitrariness and force replaced justice and quality. The population became impoverished, while the new highlords accumulated enormous wealth.

ARTRAC transferred his son TRACANSIS the rule over the former South realm. Although he was still young on years, TRACANSIS was considered as a feared fighter and an intelligent strategist. TRACANSIS appointed FRIDIS as his first lord, a captain of the black troops, which had been characterised by special cruelty in relation to their defeated enemies.

Many humans tried to escape into the resistance carrying out Mountain realm. Real streams of refugees applied into the mountains. They left their home, their friends and their relatives, in order to try their luck in the Mountain realm.

In order to prevent this, ARTRAC let the small trading route running in east west direction block by an enormous gate fortress. They built three years at it. It should prevent that humans left ARTRAC's realm. The new highlord TREMOR supervised personally the progress of the construction work.

What however happened in the sixth kingdom? Also the kingdom of the morning was afflicted after the death of king RAMIR by turbulences. But then a man collected the guidanceless soldiers and re-established the order. Nobody knew, from where he came. Nobody knew his name. He was only called the Kalif by the people.

The humans of the kingdom of the morning did not know that the Kalif was only a stooge of the kite king. After his experiences with the Mountain realm ARTRAC had proceeded against the sixth kingdom in secret. So he had supplied the Kalif with gold and jewels to take over the kingdom of the morning.

After he had strengthened his power, the Kalif let fall his mask, and he suppressed with the help of his it in the meantime loyal devoted army the population. The hero, the wise ruler, became the dark Kalif, which had only one thing in his mind to increase the own wealth.

The people in the realm of the dragons, how the five kingdoms were now called, suffered great emergency. It remained hardly enough for the farmers by their harvest that they became themselves full. The cities pressed high taxes. Where once merry humans were to be seen, one met now only serious and hungry faces.

Such a change in 18 years!  I'm sorry to see the suffering of the people, but these developments increase readers'/viewers' interest.

All of these photos and scenes look spectacular, Vauban!  Your Steck creations are so impressive and I really like all of your customs.

Chapter II.

The door of the old smithy was opened with a loud cracking. In the door the dark shape of a tax collector appeared. Two dragon soldiers followed him. „Citizens, on behalf of our noble ruler, the highlord Tremor, I come, in order to call the due taxes in! “

The old smith made a deep bow before the tax collector and handed him a bag. The tax collector had a look inside, then he struck his hand in the smith's face, so that this went to soil. „That's all? A few copper pieces ? Do you want to keep back the taxes from your king? “

The apprentice of the smith saw falling his master to soil. He was a young high-grown man. The hard work in the smithy had lent to him large power. His eyes sparkled before rage. He wanted already to hurry to assistance to his master , but LILIAN, the daughter of the smith, held him back. „Stop. It would make only worse all “, she whispered to him.

 „Honourable master, only a few horses are  fitted again. With my hands work I can nourish hardly still my family. “Scornfully sneering the dark one turned to the falling. „If you have too little work , then I will give you work. Today in one week you will pay your taxes. You have to forge twenty swords, then your taxes are paid.“

„Twenty swords in one week? I do not even have enough material for ten “, called the smith against the tax collector. „Twenty. No piece less. And I warn you! I will punish you, even if only one blade is blunt! “With these words and the bag with the copper pieces the tax collector left the smithy.

„Master, how could this inhuman only strike you. I will support you. “ The young man helped the old smith on the legs. „RAS, my boy, let it be good. Heat up the furnace. We must hurry, so that the swords will be finished to the date. Daughter, run to the "Wild Bear “. ARIM, the dealer, is usually at this time there. He is to supply to me with iron as fast as possible. “

Chapter III.

One week later the tax collector entered again the old smithy. „Smith, I come around to fetch your taxes“, he called. He approached the old person with a few fast steps. 13 flashing swords lay on the table.

She will compensate us for the escaped tax. “With greedy hands the tax collector seized Lilian. „No “, Lilian cried and struck crying the hands before her face.

“Leave the young woman in peace!” RAS came closer at the bad guy. The young man held the fourtenth finished sword in his hands. He had hidden it following a intention.  „You leave immediately the house and do not return. Your greedy hands are to never threaten again a respectable man! “

„You dirty bastard! Do you threaten me with a sword? I will show you, how a gentleman leads the blade. “The tax collector pulled his sword.  He went on RAS with some fast impacts. The young smith answered first slowly and awkwardly, then however he became ever more surely and exchanged the roles. With enormous blows he attacked ARTRAC's servant.

Gradually the tax collector recognized that he would be the loser in this fight. It became ever more difficult for him to evade to the young man's sword. He cried full of fear, "soldiers, to me!" RAS pushed his opponent more and more toward the wall.

When they had heard a calling of their master, the soldiers stormed immediately into the room. But also the smith and his daughter LILIAN did not remain dormant. LILIAN threw a broom between the first soldier's legs, so that he fell. The second warrior fell over his comrades and then he was met by a bucket, which the old smith threw after him. He fell also to soil. LILIAN was already with the broom over the first one and struck him also meditationless.

The tax collector did not notice this. He hoped in vain for the support of his soldiers. Further and further he had to go back before his aggressor. But then he stood with the back at the wall. He was incapable to also only undertake a step of his defense. He looked full fear of death on the point of the young man's sword.

When RAS saw into the eyes widened before fear of his opponent, put his anger. Cool consideration stepped in its place. With an enormous blow of his left hand he stretched his opposite down. These one sank unconscious to soil. With a fast view RAS looked around in the smithy.

LILIAN, which had observed the fight of the two men, ran to RAS and embraced him. „By the Indescribable, RAS, what have we done? ARTRAC will send soldiers and will throw us into the deepest dungeon, where we become putrid, or worse will happen to us.“ Comforting RAS pressed the young woman. The old smith spoke to the both, „you must fleeing! Flee! I will worry about the three here, when they will awake.“

RAS held LILIAN further at the hand and turned to the old smith, „tell me, master, nevertheless what will become with you, when these guys will awake? They will want throat themselves also at you. “ „I will say to the tax collector that you had struggled down also the soldiers. Those will guard to admit that they were overwhelmed by a young woman and an old man. I will state that you struck me down and kidnapped LILIAN. “

LILIAN asked, „nevertheless where are we to go? ARTRAC's men are everywhere. “„I know a place not far from here, at which we can hide ourselves “, RAS answered the young woman. The old smith and RAS disarmed the sleeping soldiers and threw the weapons into the hot melting furnace, so that they could cause no more damage. LILIAN had packed together in the meantime a few belongings.

Now they had to take to parting. The old smith pressed his daughter firmly. Then he stepped to RAS, „pay well attention to my daughter. I wish you all good things on earth for the future. The Indescribable may give us better times, so that we see us again healthy! “

RAS removed the horse of the car, while LILIAN took the riding horse of the tax collector. Then both mounted the horses. They signed to LILIAN's father to the parting and galloped toward the forest. The old man's eyes gleamed damp, when he looked at the two young people. Then he turned and went back in the house, where he put and was waiting that his unsolicited guests would awake.

Yes!  I knew Ras would be a force to be reckoned with.  I kinda wish he would have thrown the tax collector in the furnace.  I'm now officially hooked on this story and am really looking forward to future installments.   :wave:

Chapter IV.

After LILIAN and RAS had covered some miles, they slowed their ride down. RAS led them on narrow ways more deeply into the forest inside. Finally they left these paths at a small clearing also. The forest became ever closer, and the branches hang always further down. So they were forced to descend off the horses.

After some time they achieved again a small clearing. A small hut expected them a this place. Before the hut a man sat on a bank. When he saw the two coming, he rose and limbed them against. He had lost his right leg below the knee and carried instead of its one from wood. His mouth disappeared nearly under his long black beard.

He greeted joyfully the both arriving people, „hello, RAS, what a fine surprise! And what pretty attendance you bring along us. “„Also I greet you, estimated uncle. Is father there? “„He is as usual in the forest. But say, who is your attractive companion? “ The bearded man helped LILIAN to descend from the horse.

I have to communicate to him and also to you some important news. “The bearded man headered surprised the brows and answered with a long-drawn-out „Neeeews? You make me correctly curious. I hope that your old father will return soon. Now follow me. You are certainly hungry and thirsty. “ They followed the one-leg man, bounded the horses to a stake and entered the hut.

LILIAN regarded inside interested the equipment. The interior was very much more largely, than the hut let it suspect from the outside. On a crate an old violin and a flute lay. LILIAN reached for the flute. It was already very old. „Do you play it? “„No, for a long time no more. Those are memories to a nearly forgotten time “, answered the man with pain in his voice.

RAS and his uncle were captured by the music. Nobody noticed, how over the play the time elapsed, and the dusk fallow.

Steps approached from the outside, and the door was opened. A man with snow-white hair came in here. When it RAS recognized, his eyes flashed, „RAS, my boy, what a joy! Did your master give you vacation, in order to visit your old father? Or which circumstances drive you to such an unusual time to us? “

 „A very bad situation, into which I brought my master, LILIAN and me. But I want to tell from the outset… “, and thus RAS began to report to his father and to his uncle from the tax collector and the soldiers.

After RAS had ended his story, he looked at his father for a long time. This one was silent the first while. Then his father began to speak, „my boy, I see that the education, which you received let you ripen to a good human. The pervasive fear wich captured the humans in these days did not seize your heart. I am proud on you - and your real father would be it also! “

„But you are my father!“ RAS looked surprised to the man, whom he knew as his father. „My whole life long we were together, only when I went to the smith into the teachings, I did not sleep any longer under the same roof as you. You taught running and riding to me. Also you taught me the shooting with the bow , and how to fight with the sword. And by the Indescribable one, today I was glad over these lessons. “

Set you. “ After all had taken place at the table, the old man began to tell, „I met your father for the first time in company of my father. My father was the highest hunter in the service of the king… “

„It was my sixteenth birthday. My father carried me forward to our ruler, king JURON. It was father's desire that I should go to him into the teachings as hunter. In addition it required however the agreement of the king. He permitted my training in a well-meaning manner. “

You are not RAS, HADOR the hunter's son, but TURAS, youngest son of the JURON with his wife AETERA and brother of the TURID. Royal blood flows in your veins, nobly is your descent. “Disbelieving TURAS stared to his alleged father, „however is that possible? TURAS was killed with his mother in the dragon wars. “

Finally got caught up on the last two chapters.  Excellent installments as usual Vauban.  I love the bruised eye on one of the dragon guards.  It is this attention to detail that makes your pics so wonderful to look at.  Can't wait to see what the next installment holds in store for our intrepid heroes.

They awaked well rested on the next morning. JURAS brought black pilgrim cowls for the four. While the others dressed the robes, HADOR went to an old chest and took a bundle out.

They decided to travel first in direction northeast toward the large seas. There they wanted to try their luck and to follow a group of dealers, who are following the Small Trading Route on the way to the Large Bazaar. They hoped to travel in the group more inconspicuously.

The Large Bazaar was lying at the crossing of the Large and the Small Trading Route . Also under ARTRAC's rule it was the most important commercial centre of the kingdoms. But goods were not only sold, also informations were dealed there. Thus TURAS hoped to experience there somewhat over his brother.

The fellows actually found at the next commercial station a small group of dealers, whose caravan was to the Large Bazaar on the way. Over the companion money they came rapidly to an agreement with the trading master. From pilgrims, who were in the name of the Indescribable on their way, he took only a small fee.

Thus they took their place in the caravan on the next day and began their journey to the Large Bazar. The first days of the journey passed without special occurrences. They made friends themselves a little bit with the trading master.

His name was PETAK. He was young man, the dragon wars he experienced as a child. In the meantime he had displaced  the war memories and was content with his life. He grumbled about the fact that the tariffs and taxes were again increased, but he was his own master and traveled this way and that by the realm of the dragons.

The members of the caravan changed during the travel process. Except the trading master only two further dealers had remained of the original group, with which they were started. One of them was the thick KUGAR, a friendly man at the beginning of forty. He was always in a good mood and helpfully. He dealed with spices. The other one was ISHIM, a word-meager man. He traveled only with a small luggage and his horse.  They experienced from PETAK that ISHIM was an information broker. He was used to him to be paid for each word, which he spoke.

After he had controlled also these, he went back to the guard. TURAS drew a deep breath. „Ease you, boy “, HADOR whispered to the young man. „Also my face was a long time on the warrants of arrest. My parents would have recognized me on none of them.“

On the second day, after they had crossed the bridge, the route led them by a small forest. Suddenly masked men turned up from the forest where they have hided. Threateningly their weapons were targeted at the travelers and the guardians.

The threat showed effect. The two guardians let their weapons fall. Three robbers pushed the travelers to the edge of route and watched them well. The remaining robbers were searching through the crates and baskets.

They followed JON over the fields into a valley. The groupe arrived at a small settlement. A woman ran toward JON. Her face was beaming with joy. „JON, I thank to the Indescribable that you are here again fine and healthy. I was so anxious about you. “

I'm really sorry that you have lost your leg."

Perhaps you mean this on purpose,
but:

You're right. I mean (a) God with the Indescribable, but I never wanted to use a "real" religion. So I don't use the word "God", too. All the people (and some nonhuman  ;) ) in the various realms I created believe in the Indescribable. So there is no reason for religious controversies, too. A chapter I never would tell.

I hope it is so a little bit clearer. Five years ago I never thought that I would translate this story in English  ;)

Chapter XIII.

Suddenly they heard horse hooves and people's shouting from outside. With few steps JON was at the door, but it was already pushed open, and dragon soldiers ran into the room. After a short look into the room they pulled JURAS, JON and TURAS outside.

Unarmed and in view of the supremacy of the soldiers the three men let themselves be exhausted without resistance. TESSMA, LILIAN and HADOR followed them in a hurry. On the small village square a group of soldiers already stood. They had together-driven all men of the village. These had to set up themselves next to each other in a row.

One after the other the commander of the soldiers paced down the men. When he came to JURAS, he shouted to his soldiers, „are you blind, you boobies? This one has only one leg! What can I do with him?“ Then he pointed to JON, „and here the one is too old! “

Two of the soldiers pushed JURAS and JON to the women and turned then again to their comrades. Finally the commander came to TURAS. „So, so - a pilgrim. “The commander looked to TURAS in his face, then he tore him with a rapid hand movement the robe from the body. „A young man, largely and with strong arms, as I see. And you want to be a pilgrim? You probably hoped to flee masked as pilgrim before the military service? Captain, respect this one here particularly well! “

The commander terminated his examination. „Men “, he cried over the place, „from now on you have the honour to serve as soldiers our good-natured highestlord ARTRAC! Captain, we go!“ On this command the dragon soldiers set themselves  in motion and drove the young men ago before themselves. After few minutes they had left the village.

The women and the left men looked to their brothers, sons and husbands after. Some of the women cried. They tried to console mutually. „Where do they take the men? “ JURAS wanted to know from JON. „Probable after Talsend. In the town are barracks of the dragons“, this one answered after short considering. „We must follow to them, we won't leave the boy alone “, threw HADOR in.

JON answered, „take the horses, and follow the boy. But I must warn queen SELLINA before the new attack.“ LILIAN, HADOR and JURAS nodded. Without losing many words, the three went away of TESSMA and JON. They said good-bye and rode after the soldier afterwards Talsend.

Chapter XIV.

As JON had forecast it, the soldiers led the village inhabitants into the barracks of Talsend. There the commander left the recruits to the captain for training. „Let us see, how you can fight. You there “, the captain showed with his sword point to TURAS, „take sword and shield and fight with me! “

TURAS stepped to the small bank, on which the weapons lay, and selected with consideration one of the swords and a shield. „Ho, don't fall asleep thereby! Come on! “ TURAS observed the captain exactly when he approached him. A short moment long the two looked themselves into the eyes, then the captain set to an enormous blow with his sword. TURAS could lift straight still his shield, in order to repel the attack.

The captain continued to attack with large speed and power. TURAS tried to remind of everything, what his uncle and HADOR had taught him, but against the experienced captain he did not have a chance. The captain pushed him back, and finally the warrior disarmed TURAS. He typed with his sword point on TURAS' chest, „my complement, still no recruit so long held out like you. We will have still much fun with one another. “

The recruits did not notice that the happening on the yard was observed from the guardroom. After the fight was terminated, two soldiers approached. One of them came closer to the captain and made message, „captain, we have the instruction, this recruit “, he pointed to TURAS, "to bring to the commander!“

LILIAN, JURAS and HADOR were concerned meanwhile in Talsend also. They had left the horses under the guard of some wolves in the nearby forest. They wore still the pilgrim robes. So it has happen that they passes the guardians without problems.

They hurried by the streets of the town. Only few humans crossed their way. The few, which they met, had lowered the heads. The citizens hurried to pass at them. No one had a look at the three pilgrims.

From fear to appear suspicious they did not dare it to ask for the way to the barracks. But then they saw a small patrol of dragon soldiers. In hope that These were returning to the barracks, they decided to follow them. They had luck, and finally they arrived before the gates of the barracks.

Lilian had hardly expressed, the gate opened, and two riders left in a hurry the barracks. They galloped by the street, as if the devil would be after their soul. Frightened the few people on the street jumped to the house walls and looked fearfully to the building, so as if they would expect further soldiers coming from the barracks.

Chapter XVI.

In the meantime the soldiers had led TURAS into the guardroom before the commander. „Is this the man, whom you saw? “ the commander asked to the rear in the twilight. „That is one of the men, which the robbers carried away.“ The information broker ISHIM stepped from the shadow. „Under their cart they had hidden the golden sword. “

The soldiers took TURAS at his shoulders and dragged him into a dungeon cell. The young man was marched off to the prison without any resistance. After the soldiers had closed the cell door behind TURAS, he sank on the plank bed and stared with empty eyes to the opposite wall.

The two men talked until deep into the night. They were always carefully to tattle nothing what betrayed TURAS’ true identity. Then they put to sleep on their plank beds. TURAS’ found comfort with the thought not to be alone.

@grangel: Many thanks for this nice comment. It's only the dragon's king, who is bad. His ancestor was a very noble man and fought with the lily knights in a great war against the evil. But this is another story wich will be told in autumn.

Chapter XVII.

On the next day the commander came with two soldiers at TURAS' cell door. „You woke my curiosity now. My messenger just brought the news that highlord TRACANSIS  will accomplish purely personally your examination tomorrow. Unfortunately he also forbade it to me to torture you. But, be certain, you will answer our questions tomorrow!“

Chapter XVIII.

At evening ARN sat in his cell and looked sadly at the walls. Suddenly the dungeon door was opened and LILIAN, HADOR and JURAS stormed into the dungeon. With a sword in his hand HADOR looked around. „he is gone!“ ARN stepped to his lattice and called HADOR, "TRACANSIS carried the boy away! He wants to bring him to ARTRAC!“

They managed it to run unnoticed to the barracks wall. They climbed steep stairs to the walk along of the battlements. Hador took a hook and a rope, which he carried over the shoulders, embodied both at a battlement and whispered to JURAS, "you first.“ JURAS climbed quickly at the rope down to the ground, LILIAN and ARN followed him.

Hardly that JURAS had his legs on the soil, the call rang out from the dungeon, „the prisoner fled!“ During the four fled into the protecting darkness of the side lanes, the soldiers hurried over the yard, and the first left the barracks on horses. But it was a dark night, clouds hid the moon. So the four could flee unnoticed in the protection of the darkness.

ARN led his fellows now on devoured ways by the town up to a house. He knocked on the door. Above their heads a window was opened and a voice asked, „who's there? “ ARN answered, „four wolves are looking for the herd and are asking for a safe hide-out.“ Inside a latch plate was pushed back, and one invited the four in the house.

Wow, I was several chapters behind and just read about eight pages worth of story.  I must say>>>Amazing!  The pictures are brilliant, as are the custom figures.  One aspect of the story I have not commented on yet is the translation.  First, thanks for taking the time to translate your great story into english.  Secondly, I think the imperfect translation gives the story a certain flare that seems fitting.  Can't wait for the Time of the Wolves.  :wave:

@all: Many thanks for all your nice comments. I enjoyed all of them.

@El Jefe: The translation is for me realy a large obstacle. 8} In the German text I used unfortunately too frequently too long and too complicated sentences. That is indeed my style to write.  :-[ A translation becomes naturally quite more difficult thereby. It is a very long time ago that I have read a book in English, so I don't know how to "write it in English". But it really makes me happy that you find in this a certain flare for the story.  ;D

It is great to see a story that is so well planned out. I love your scenes, custum klickies and specifically the buildings. You manage to make each street look different and each castle is unique.

It must have taken you so much time to make all this. Thank you so much for your efforts in translating it all!
