Title: a Hata-jirushi for a samurai army
Post by: cheng on February 10, 2011, 10:10:58
Hata-jirushi were the most common of war banners (simple streamers attached to a shaft by a horizontal cross-piece) used on the medieval Japanese battlefield which were later replaced by the nobori(stiffened flags),
for identifying and distinguishing regiments or sections of a Samurai army.

as for the wirtings, they can range from Buddhist sayings, to 'Fly like the Wind..' to missions(e.g. WoT, I'm coming to collect your head) and sometimes specifically identifying the wearer  :)

Another fie custom, cheng, and more useful knowledge too.  Thank you.

It sounds as if in some ways the tee-shirt with the slogan on is not dissimilar to these banners.

That's true,
it is very interesting the difference of the Samurai's warrior code,
and the Western Knights form of Chivalry.
If I had to guess, had Knights and Samurai ever interacted,
the Knights of Europe would have thought of the Samurai
much the same as they thought of the Byzantines.

but it has been recorded that samurai(s) did fight fair where leaders clashed while their soldiers could only watch such 1 to 1 challenges but it must have been the advent of those menacing Ashigarus that make a clash more and more messy   :P btw, sorry for my ignorance, how badly did they think of the Byzantines?

Pretty badly,
the Byzantines felt that the Western Europeans were still Barbarians,
While the Knights of Western Europe felt that the Byzantines were stuck up, and very tricky.
Where the Knights of Western Europe fought with fewer tactics,
the Byzantines were always using tactics to win the day.

Because of this,
And the ill feeling that the Byzantines already had towards them,
the Western Europeans did not like them very much. :P

The Byzantines was an empire contuation of the roman empire but christian where most emperors were greek and the offical language was greek . A pwerful empire that last over 1000 years and was destroyed in 1204 when their capital was pillaged by the western europeans in what was meant to be a friendly stay at their city. After that it stopped being an empire and was eventually taken over by the Turks with the famous siege of Constaninoupole and its destruction on 29th May, 1453.

The Byzantines had a powerful army and controlled massive parts of europe, asia and africa for many hundreds of year.
