Title: Playmofriends Photo Contest
Post by: tonguello on February 02, 2011, 12:12:38
Hello Playmofriends!

The mods team had been discussing the launch of a Playmofriends photo contest. The details still must be discussed.
We would like to know first if this is something welcome by the forum community (or at least by the majority) and also how many people would be willing to participate. You don't need to be a photographer! It's just for the fun of it!!  So please vote and feel free to post your thoughts.

We had a photo event here before but most members at the time wanted it to be non-competitive due to hurting peoples feeling (friends do not compete against each other) In my opinion friendly competition can help people try harder.

One thing I see necessary is that people who vote do not know who the picture is from as there will be too much of a desire to chose on who it is by as apposed to the picture itself.

The other is that people with a photoshop knowledge have an unfair advantage over people who shoot all natural, in nature or in a studio setting.

I think categories could help seperate them out

That's a good point. We may have to consider that.

I'm hoping a little friendly competition will generate some more interest in photography here. This forum is very strong on story telling and customizing, but we don't seem to get so much photography. I think it'd be great to round that out a little.

yes I agree with this too!

Regarding the competition it would be just for fun... no prices nor special points or anything woudl be won! Just the title of winner of the month.

great point bb

I think a moderator need to be the "go to person" and all entries should be submitted to that person via PM's

Then the moderator could randomly set up the pictures in a locked voting topic (no Comments)

Then after the votes are tallied the identities of the creators should be reveled and comments can be unlocked

I like the idea of subjects for every other month and the others are freely open.

I have to totally disagree with this. Think about some of the things we've seen here - like ships on a body of water at sunset, fairies in a forest, snow scenes. A well done outside shot can actually have an advantage with voters over a studio shot. It's all about what people like. As far as skill - something like this encourages people to develop their photo skills. It's not about being competitive so much as about sharing the experience and getting to see lots of cool Playmo scenes. Just being recognized by your peers as doing a good job means a lot to people.

This is the way it's been done over at LG for years and it works well. The one other thing that's done is before the photographers are revealed there is a guessing game where you try to figure out who took which shot.

On that specific bit I think it depends on the volume of entries. If there are 4 or 5 entries total then splitting wouldn't make much sense. If we get lots of entries of both types then it may. I don't think we're going to know until it's actually tried out.

If there were to be categories, how would we decide which level each participant would be assigned to? Like professional, amateur, photoshop, non photoshop, natural, staged, etc? This may cause a lot of members to not submit contributions because of being too complicated.

yeah that was what I was thinking. It's better to keep it simple.

I think so too. Simple is better. If there's a tremendous amount of support we could think about making it more complex later, maybe.
Title: Re: Playmofriends Photo Contest
Post by: Rasputin on February 02, 2011, 23:06:01
As you stated if we have it set up in a complicated way than the will deter people from participating. But you also get  people not wanting to contribute due to them knowing that there is no chance in winning due to some very talented individuals who have a back round in this subject. If my kid wanted to enter he knows what others can do and he knows he can not compete against that talent level. Some members are very talented at special effects not only in computer aided editing but also with staged pictures.

There are a lot less talented people than ones that are not. If you want to include the majority it can not favor the few.

Competitions can not be all happy for everyone. most people loose and do not like it, only one wins . Repetitive losers soon lose interest

From the way it sounds, it may be better to scrap the photo contest project to prevent any hard feelings. You can't please all of the people all of the time, so maybe it would be better not to please anyone at all.

I do like the idea of a topic every other month.
As to some people being better photographers than others, I think that it is not just the photographic skill that counts but also the idea for something that would help to decide which to vote for.
And at the end of the day, it is the fun of setting things up to take a photo that matters, and looking at what others have done is always enjoyable, winning would just be an extra!

Bill, I think this is a bad idea to scrap the whole thing because someone's feelings might get hurt.  I think we should do it once.  If there are alot of enteries, maybe they could be split into photoshopped and not.  As far as winning, I could care less.  I would still enter something every month even if I lost every month.  I just want to see a bunch of cool, different pics created by our members.  If someone is so soft skinned that they couldn't handle a photo contest, then they should probably ignore the contest all together.
Just my thoughts at the moment.

Well said, Elaine  :)9

I know I would not win, but it would just be fun to participate as well as see others' photos and the creativity behind them. It would not hurt my feelings if I didn't get a single vote. It would just be something fun to do ;) That is also another reason I thought categories would be nice because more than one person could win. That is just my two cents

A noble rebuttal el jefe :wow:! I agree that it should be just for fun, but the issue has been brought up that a child could be out done by an adult or peer with better photography skills causing the feeling to give up. Unless there are categories developed, & that would include someone judging where the participants are qualified to be in which level. The only other way would be for the participants to fill out an application with their own interpretation of their own skills, like if they know they are an amateur level instead of a professional, that they don't know anything about photoshop, & they're not going to be utilizing that option, etc., then it may be easier. I don't want to see the idea scrapped, but too much debate will cause delays getting it started.

I feel like categories would make it too complicated at first. Let's see how much participation we really get the first one or two months, and then talk about categories. Hopefully everyone will just be in it for fun, not out to slaughter their fellow playmofriends.  i know I'm sure I won't win, but I'll enter anyway, just because it's fun.

I have to agree with Elaine and El Jefe in everything they have said, sorry Bill and Rasp.  :-[

I think several categories would complicate things. Maybe we should have two, and that's all, I don't know. But this thread is not for details, just voting!!!
So far I see there is no negative voting and only one person who would only watch. So why to private all those who vote on favor of the contest. This is what this poll is about. Those agains it vote no. If YES wins....well you have the chance to skip the contest thread. If NO wins we'll accept that.

Just my 2 cents.

Then if most people do not care about winning or not why organize it as a contest ? Just have it a sharing experience .

I do not think scrapping the idea is necessary. This idea has been tried before and should again

I have noticed in other photo contests that a small group of members are the ones who compete. If more thought were to go into how to organize it in such a way to feel the most welcoming then you will find more people joining in.

If it is just sharing photos would be boring. Im sorry but it would be like our current photo section. no one goes there. we have to spice it up a little bit. beside, there will be no prices and everyone would vote for best pic. I can't see a harm in that.

Your second paragraph is so true. If we make this happen we have to work the best way to include everyone who wants to join.... but that is work for later.

It's being voted on as a contest, so if it passes by vote, there will be winners, & non winners. If everyone is OK with that, & no participant rules. It should be fine. I agree with Elaine, Juniors pictures will sure make mine look bad :-[, his Eskimo, & polar bear pics were professional, natural background, photography scholarship, million dollar award winning caliber good! I will gladly loose to that kind of competition! :wow:

What a splendid idea

Those who have followed my thread in the Photography & Graphic section about my participation to Photographic Contests on Playclicks.com ( Spain ) and Tricornejock.com ( Germany / France ) already know how much fun this has been since I decided to join my first contest back in 1989 on Playclicks.com.

I must admit that I had never taken a picture of a klicky prior to February 2009 but when I started my victorian tales, I decided to select a few pictures to list in the competition and there started a thread which has already seen more than 4000 visits so far  ;)

It is just about having fun and sharing with other members your own vision of Playmobil.

I am personally for a non monthly theme in order to give everyone a chance to participate but once the concept will be in place but we could organize a Christmas special which is always popular.

The Photographic Contests on both Playclicks.com and Tricornejock.com are always involving great mutual respect, good spirits and the results speak for themselves as the creativity and imagination of our Friends from the online communities are just limitless !

I believe that one should consider keeping the things simple with :

- a dedicated section including one picture posting thread in which the members can post their own picture

- one related thread for the comments of the members

- one thread for the vote

These three new threads being created every month and so on.

The most important thing is to appeal to each and every member for as long as the picture is their own creation.

When it comes to associating a picture with a member, I believe that most of us recognize certain members with their style so it may be a good idea to let the members post their monthly picture. Playclicks.com and Tricornejock.com both show the picture and the name of the member and it has never been an issue.

It is just about appreciating the fact that a member made the effort of thinking of a picture, taking it and sharing it with the community so this commands respect whether one likes the picture or not.

I have learned over the years that creativity and imagination are far from being the sole possession of experienced Collectors and I have seen some amazing pictures taken by new members who won the contest as they took everyone by storm.  ;)

As an example, I remember a klicky locked in a jar of coffee which was such an amazing picture yet so simple as it did not require any decor or accessories, it is just about imagination.

Playmofriends has demonstrated in the jousting tournament and other initiatives the incredible talent of its members and I believe that it is about time that our favorite Playmo Forum has its own photographic contest

Karim :)

Thank you for your well thought out reasoning Karim, it's good to have your opinion because you have a lot of experience with this.

In regards to the topics I would say that we should have something special every month.

The lead designer in Magic has explained in many of his columns how restriction breeds creativity so by instead of having "anything goes" we might see much more creative entries.

Some things I have thought of:

Motivational poster
Must include exactly one klicky
Today
Must include fruit
...

Just some random thoughts but I am sure it will help people get more creative.

:-)

PS First round will be in March right...please??

Thank you Karim!! I thought about asking your opinion by Pm if you didn't post. It is most valuable for we know you participate in Playclicks. I don't know exactly who else takes part of something like this in other forums.
So thanks for the input, all good points!!!

Though I must agree with Gis, to limit the options is better and gives you more chances for creations. I believe a monthly theme is better or a few guidelines maybe (like he said...fruits, or animals). Maybe also we can use the festivity of the particular month like Saint Valentine, Xmas, etc. And form month to month we could have a free theme special.

I like the ideas of themes....it would unify all our pictures and force us all to be a little more creative. I think that would also help close the gap between those who are really good photographers and those who aren't
Title: Re: Playmofriends Photo Contest
Post by: bonniebeth on February 03, 2011, 13:46:59
I think themes are a good idea, as some might be inclined to take very similar pictures each month, not as much variety, ithout the challenge of having to think outside the box. Though I think they should be more imaginative than just matching the holiday of the month, as this would mean the same themes come around every year. (and not everyone celebrates these holidays  ;) ) Themes like the ones Gis suggested would yeild much more artistic results, IMO.

I think Karim has a good point about the pictures not needing to be anonymous. It's true that many people have a very distinctive style, and especially after several months, we will all recognize each other's work, anyway.  :)

I think themes would be a great idea and more challenging.  Let's not do a Victorian theme or Karim will destroy everyone!

I think themes are a great idea.
If possible we would want to announce the themes a month or two in advance and keep in mind that there will be a week or more of voting before a winner is chosen for the theme. So if you want to do seasonal like Halloween you would need to announce in August or September, take entries for the first 2 weeks of October, vote the third/fourth week, and then you would have a winner for Halloween.

Yes, I agree.

We haven't decided yet but there's a good chance I think that march would be the first one. Starting maybe the last days of february to be voting the last week of march. we should keep it simple this first time and take it as a pilot! then we have more time to work on the next months. what do you think?

I don't like the themes idea for each month - i don't collect all themes and if I want to share a picture that doesn't match the rest then I'd need to wait several weeks or months to show it till it's my theme's turn :hmm: - isn't that more limiting?

i'd prefer that only for specific holidays, like christmas, valentine's, halloween, etc

I'm not sure per se the photo themes would exactly match the Playmobil themes.  For example:  the photo contest theme maybe something like friendship, as opposed to say Romans or Victorian.  Because, yeah, I get what your saying.

I still find it kind of limiting though, if a month is dedicated to say war and i want to post a love related photo then i wouldn't be able to participate...

well.... everyone would have to stick to the theme otherwise there is no point of making one, except those months when the theme is free and you can present the pic you want  :)

Oh, are those two different things?   :P

I think we can keep the themes broad enough that we can all find something to do with them.

Right. We already have some themes in mind  ;D and we want to make them interesting, but still rather vague so they could be interpreted many different ways. I don't think it will feel to restrictive, just offer a bit of a challenge.

Themes would be great! The ideas would be endless and could get everyone's juices flowing and end up with some great photos! Even if, we all are not "professional" photographers (as long as the pic is clear & visible).....its what's in the picture that reflects that month's theme that counts!  ;)

Yes, I think it will be so much fun to see the various interpretations of each theme, see what different people thought of. I'm excited about it!  :yippee:

On a different forum they post the picture for all to see each month. It might draw more attention to the event if everyone see the picture at the top of the main board maybe in between the PF header and the logo

are you sure? ;D sounds like a plan...I'll make free use of my personal interpretation then ;)

I still don't feel pumped :uhoh:

I think what Ras is saying is put the winning pic somewhere where it's visible.  Like in between the PF font and the symbol.  Or maybe on the homepage, where the "friendship" photos are.

I think it would be viewed much more in the first example. It would not have to be big and could even be a link to a larger version or even to the topic location

That's a good idea. That's one we'll have to ask Sylvia about, though.

Ya but how many members go there while they are logged in . Everyone has to view the list of boards so it would get viewed all the time creating more interest in the event. I never see that friendship picture and I do not even know where it is.

Yeah, I have a direct link to the board index in my home page, so I don't ever see the forum home page either.

I said that for a different reason.

so mysterious.  This is the second "secret" i've stumbled onto in as many days.  I should be a spook in the CIA ;D

Wait, actually I don't get it.   :-[  Just wait and see I guess.

  Hello,

Oh very good!!! I vote yes for this new photo-contest and I´ll take a part when I can . With Photoshop or not, with categories or not, Photos via MP or not..... My experience say, made a rules so simply as possible and think about a work of moderators in the futur.

My experience is that it´s not necessary to make a categories. Some retouch photos with PS or some other Photo-programs are god but sometime too realy a artistic disater. Some members made really a great photos because of idea and not because of experience or professionalism. Give a subject at start of contest is a good idea too but let some contest free to give more free creativity and more place to the players.

A first and last reason of photo-contest on the Playmobil-forums ist........ FUN FUN FUN !!!! Loos or win is very secondary.

A big thank you to the organizers.

I enjoy :D

Greetings,
TJ
