This thread will explore and showcase some films and shows for children that will help inspire play and interest in various themes.
The first movie is the 1954 movie 'Prince Valiant' that I can highly recommend. Also, if you ever wanted to have an excuse to mix knights and vikings together this is the perfect one!!!
A synopsis of it is:
Young Prince Valiant, son of the exiled King of Scandia, journeys to Camelot to become a knight at King Arthur's Round Table. He hopes to help his father reclaim his throne from the pagan usurper Sligon and restore the Christian faith to their homeland. On his journey he stumbles on the mysterious Black Knight plotting with the Viking pretender to overthrow Arthur. Barely escaping with his life, Valiant encounters Sir Gawaine, a friend of his father's who tutors the young Viking in the skills needed to be a knight. Valiant and Gawaine's pupil/mentor relationship is complicated by their romantic involvement with Princess Aleta and her sister Ilene, daughters of a British nobleman. If Valiant is to restore his father's throne and prevent the coup d'etat against Arthur, he must uncover the true identity of the Black Knight.
More about the movie can be read at imdb.com:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047365/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047365/)
It is based on the original comic strip by Hal Foster entitled, 'Prince Valiant in the Days of King Arthur', running from 1937 to 1971, that recounted the adventures of the eponymous Norse prince and his family and friends. The comic came out only in the Sunday paper and featured narration juxtaposed with illustrations rather than the usual thought and speech balloons. During most of Hal Foster's lifetime it occupied one whole page of the Sunday funnies.

The Adventures of Robin Hood
Rollicking Technicolor tale of the legendary outlaw, regarded as the swashbuckler standard-bearer. The justice-minded Saxon knight battles the Normans, outwits evil Prince John, and gallantly romances Maid Marian. Grand castle sets and lush forest photography display ample evidence of the huge (in 1938) budget of $2 million plus. Just entering his prime, Flynn enthusiastically performed most of his own stunts, including intricate sword play and advanced tree and wall climbing. His Robin brims with charm and bravura, the enthusiastic protector of poor Saxons everywhere and the undeclared king of Sherwood forest. The rest of the cast likewise attacks with zest: de Havilland, a cold but eventually sympathetic Maid Marian; Rains' dastardly Prince John; and Rathbone's conniving Sir Guy to Robin's band of very merry men. Based on various Robin Hood legends as well as Sir Walter Scott's "Ivanhoe" and the opera "Robin Hood" by De Koven-Smith.
This movie is just as fun today as it was when it was made in 1938.

Island at the Top of the World (1974)
Four turn of the century explorers embark on an airship expedition to the high artic. Where upon they find a lost colony of Vikings.
This is a great show from Disney, back when they made fantastic live-action adventure movies for children and while some of the special effects may seem a bit dated for some adults, children (and adults!) will enjoy it.

Swiss Family Robinson (1960)
A family in route to New Guinea is shipwrecked on a deserted tropical island. They are forced to remain on the island because of the damage to the ship and the pirates that are roaming the islands. They create a home on the island (centering around a huge tree house) and explore the island and its wildlife. Plenty of adventure ensues as the family deals with issues of survival and pirates, and the brothers must learn how to live on the island with an uncertain future.

Treasure Island (1950)
Young Jim Hawkins is caught up with the pirate Long John Silver in search of the buried treasure of the buccaneer Captain Flint, in this Walt Disney adaptation of the classic novel by Robert Louis Stevenson.
You can not go wrong with this one! Clearly this movie/story inspired so many Playmobil pirate sets.

Secret of Pirate Island (2009)
Ahoy, matey! Your favorite Playmobil toys have come to life for the very first time, in an all-new swashbuckling adventure and you’re invited to join them! You’ll have a treasure chest full of fun with seven-year-old Jack and his big sister Amelia as they stow away on a pirate ship headed for the mysterious Pirate Island — a place filled with treasure and curious creatures. Can Jack and Amelia stay one step ahead of a bunch of wacky skeletons and get to the treasure before the pirates do?
What list of movies to inspire play with Playmobil would be complete without the Playmobil movie itself?! Hopefully, Playmobil will continue to produce movies that cover all the themes.

The Great Locomotive Chase (1956)
This is based on a true story. During the Civil War, a Union spy, Andrews, is asked to lead a band of Union soldiers into the South so that they could destroy the railway system.
Real Civil War events inspired this Disney film about James Andrews (Fess Parker), a Union spy who orchestrated the theft of a Confederate locomotive. The train's spirited conductor, William Fuller (Jeffrey Hunter), will stop at nothing to track down Andrews and his gang. The thrilling chase that follows makes for fun, fast-paced, entertaining family fare.

Davey Crockett (1954 - 1956)
Five episodes (Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter; Davy Crockett Goes to Congress; Davy Crockett's Keelboat Race; Davy Crockett and the River Pirates; Davy Crockett at the Alamo) of Davy Crockett aired on Walt Disney's "Disneyland" show (1954-55) launched one of the great pop culture crazes of the '50s. An estimated $300 million worth of Crockett merchandise was sold during the first eight months of the craze, including 10 million "coonskin" caps. Disney didn't spend a lot on the original episodes, but as host Leonard Maltin observes, the colorful location and matte shots distinguished Davy Crockett from the cheesy-looking westerns of the 1950s. The three original episodes were later recut into the theatrical feature Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier (1955); the more comic adventures from the second season that introduced the flamboyant riverman Mike Fink (Jeffrey York) became Davy Crockett and the River Pirates (1956).
This is a fantastic set of movies that will definitely get the young ones clamouring for more Western Playmobil!

Great movies, all of them!
The Adventures of Robin Hood is one of my favorite movies of all time! A lot of fun! I must admit I was in love with Olivia de Havilland.
Another great swashbuckler is The Three Musketeers, but I don't know if there is a version that is appropriate for all ages. I haven't seen all the versions. The ones I have seen have some risque scenes.
-
My favorite was Disney's Swiis Family Robinson!!!! I LOVED that movie when I was a child. The golden era of Disney's life action movies!!! :inlove:
Great movies for inspiration!! Thanx for sharing!

At Sword's Point (1952)
France, 1648: Richelieu and Louis XIII are dead, the new king is a minor, and the Duc de Lavalle is in virtually open rebellion, scheming to seize power. As a last resort, Queen Anne summons the heirs of the original Musketeers to her aid...including Claire, daughter of Athos, who when she chooses can miraculously pass as a boy, and wields as fine a sword as any. All their skills will be needed for a battle against increasing odds. One for all and all for one!
This musketeers movie is less risque than most made recently. It's not perfect, but it is much better than most. At the time it would have been made for an older youth and adult audience. Tame compared to most movies made today and a bit more appropriate than newer ones for a younger audience.

We recently streamed the movie "How to Train Your Dragon" when Amazon offered it for $0.99. My daughter loved it so much that we watched it 2 times in 24 hours. I thought about how to create a play experience with Playmobil and decided on the Barbarian Fort and the new small blue dragon. She is smitten!
It doesn't hurt that the dragon reminds her of her favorite poem "The Tale of Custard the Dragon" by Ogden Nash.
So, I submit that literature (even poetry!) have crossover into the Playmobil world.

Barbie and the Three Musketeers (2009)
Barbie stars as Corinne, a country girl from Gascony who dreams of being a Musketeer, protectors of the French royal family, just like her father, D'Artagnan. Now seventeen, Corinne asks her mother to let her go to Paris to become one. Though worried about the dangers, her mother supports her and gives Corinne her blessing, as well as a letter to Monsieur Treville, the captain of the Musketeers and an old friend of her father's.
The next day before leaving, Corinne's mother reminds her about what her father use to say: "True courage is pursuing your dream, even when everyone else says it's impossible." Hugging her mother goodbye, Corinne sets off for Paris with her kitten, Miette, and Alexander, D'Artagnan's old horse.
I know what some of you are thinking - yes this is a barbie movie and yes this is a Playmobil forum. However, this, like the other Barbie movies is actually good fun for the little girls. It will also allow us to justify buying those medieval buildings and musketeer and pirate figures to our wives (yeah, I know, there are no pirates in here, but would our wives really know that?). It also goes great with the Playmobil Fairytale and Magic Castles.

I agree with "The Adventures of Robin Hood" - a classic film and a great fit with much of the Playmobil range. I bought the old Merry Men sets so my kids could play at Robin Hood.
Unfortunately I cannot think of any good King Arthur movies suitable for the under 12s. "Excalibur" was fun but wasn't suitable. Neither was "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". My son, aged 8 at the time, like "A Knight's Tale" and we had the jousting sets out for a month or so after he saw it.
Romans are badly served. All the old roman epics are rather turgid and "Gladiator" is too violent.
"How to Train Your Dragon" is a great kids film and allows a chance to mix the vikings with the range of dragons.
I know the Pirates of the Caribbean has increased interest in pirates. It is a shame they slipped into self indulgent nonsense so quickly.

There's a REALLY old movie with Bing Crosby in it called Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court that I can remember watching when I was very little. It wasn't violent; it was funny and had singing in it, but I don't remember too well because I haven't seen it since I was a kid. I say that, but now I'm humming one of the songs, so I guess I do remember!
As for Romans, I watched Ben Hur all the time because my older brother loved it, but I don't really recommend it for kids neccesarily. It's very long, and sometimes a bit intense for a very young child (I was slightly traumatized by certain scenes). But it will certainly generate interest in roman chariots and galleys.
-
I would like to point out, that the new Robin Hood movie,
(though it is probably not something you would show your kids)
is completely horrible!
The acting and stuff was good, as were the costumes, (they were period)
But the historical content was mud.
So many things wrong with it right from the get-go. :o ::)

The Adventures of Sir Lancelot (1956 - 1957)
In all of Arthurian legend, the most famous of the Knights of the Round Table is undoubtedly Sir Lancelot. This series, painstakingly researched by the History and Literature Departments of Oxford University, re-creates some of the notable exploits of the famous knight, as well as the deeds of the other members of King Arthur's court.
As to those stories, it's clear that this series was aimed at a young audience. In short order Lancelot 'adopts' young Brian to serve as his squire, and Brian proceeds to steal the show. Each week will dish up another problem for Lancelot to solve, and Brian's help will be essential.
Given this youthful focus, and the mores of the time, it's no surprise that this series delivers peril without tragedy, and combat without bloodshed. Humorous moments are plentiful, and any flirtation between Lancelot and Guinevere is strictly courteous (in the original sense of the word).
Ask and you shall receive - LOL. Here is a series that was on television in 1956 and 1957. It is public property today so you can find the full series sold by various companies that specialise old television series' and for a very inexpensive price.

The Buccaneers (1956 - 1957)
Captain Dan Tempest was an ex-pirate who received a pardon from the King and turned privateer after his stronghold of New Providence was taken over by Crown soldiers. Tempest and Lt. Beamish, the Crown-appointed deputy governor, were uneasy allies, fighting the Spanish privateers who were ravaging the Caribbean.
This is a good and enjoyable series, even if it is quite anti-Spanish and pro-British. There is a 'token' Spaniard on the "good guys" side, though. It is fun for all ages - even if not as high budget as a movie - it is a television series for youth after all from the 1950's.

William Tell (1958)
I remember seeing the TV series of William Tell in the late 50s when I was at school, and I thought it was great then, with Conrad Phllips as William, and Willoughby Goddard as the Fat Villain lol. and the real excitement for a 30 minute series was superb for the time and obviously aimed at a child audience. I then saw a re run of the series on sky in the 90s and it was still really good entertainment even for adults. I even saw a very early appearance of Michael Caine in a minor role (Just shows you eh) and quite a few other actors who become better known later in their careers. Well worth a look for anyone who likes a good simple adventure jaunt from a long while ago which I think has kept it's bite through the years.
This is a good series as well. However, like The Buccaneers bias raises its head again. This time in post-war Britain the Germans are, well, treated like Hollywood "Germans" with all the bias you've come to sadly expect.

The Adventures of Robin Hood (TV Series 1955–1960)
A long-running series of adventures featuring Robin of Locksley--Robin Hood--and his group of Sherwood-Forest-based freedom fighters. Robin and his men protected England from the evil machinations of Prince John while good King Richard was away at the Crusades. The series was primarily intended for children.
This is the famous long-running Robin Hood series with Richard Greene. Since it was made in England the actors actually have more appropriate accents than many later Robin Hood shows we have been subjected to.

7. 1994 – Asterix Conquers America (Astérix et les Indiens — produced in Germany as Asterix in Amerika)
8. 2006 – Asterix and the Vikings (Astérix et les Vikings)
9. 2014 – Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods (Asterix: Le Domaine des dieux)
This series of animated films is based upon the French graphic novels of the same name. There are live-action films, as well, but these may not be (aren't) appropriate for younger audiences as like many modern films based on what were in the past childrens books and movies and tv shows, these include very un-modest dress of women and are far from any positive example that should be set for girls. Mind you, some of the animation is not much better ...

The Boy and the Pirates (1960)
Young boy is magically transported back in time to a pirate ship on the high seas.
Another childrens adventure fantasy by Bert. I Gordon, the guy who brought us The Magic Sword (above). Just so you know, there is one scene where a pirate is run through on a sword and you can see some red dye on his hands - other than that it is pretty tame (some threats of violence by the pirate who ends up getting run through).

It is a fantastic series and I, for one, am a personal fan - but it is not really for children at all. Playmobil never really did a Napoleonic theme either - even though we have bits and bobs here and there.

You've never seen it? Well, you must. If you like Napoleonic war action this is good. It is done pretty much in chronological order so I recommend you watch them that way. The budget is not the highest, but the stories are good. Another I would recommend for older youth/adults is the Horatio Hornblower series. They are very similar to one another in production (and setting, etc).
I've never read any of the Sharpe books, but I have read the Hornblower series and that is chronological and a great read if you like naval action. It's not as intellectually stimulating as reading GK Chesterton and Hillaire Belloc, but it is fun and can teach you a lot about how the navy of the turn of the 19th C in British nations ran.
