Title: My Black Dragon Army
Post by: BlackKnightsRealm on January 04, 2011, 03:01:01
I have taken a load of photos of the different ranks of my army. I will describe each in some detail and then post pictures. I will not do all at once, but will keep adding to this thread as I cover the different unit types comprising my army. Still as always a huge work in progress, and my army is always growing! Here are the ranks/unit types of the Black Dragon army:

The Elite Black Paladins
These knights are the top elite fighting unit in the Black Dragon army and have the highest rank of all combat units.  Mounted unit is heavily armored and equipped with weapons which include pikes, battle lances, swords, battle-axes, and flails. These elite warriors are from the upper class and typically live on large tracts of land with a manor having serfs under them. These manors usually are part of larger towns or city settlement which are under the control of a Lord or Vassal who report to the Queen. (There is no king in this Dragon realm, the Queen is the highest authority in this land). In times of war, these Lords and Vassals will bring their troops to battle for the Queen. The Paladins also accompany them.

In wartimes, the Paladins are led by Lord Alderran who is the general of the entire army, and lives in a manor in the fortified central royal castle town. He is easily identified in the pictures by his armor.

They look absolutely great BKRealm! And a love a good background story. I am really looking forward to see more of your army and hear more of the realms!

One thing though, is there a reason you use Silver Chainmail hair on Lord Alderran instead of giold?

Very impressive, although I guess Lord Alderran's life insurance premiums must be on the high side with that conspicuous suit of amour.   :)

Yes, firstly because I dont have a gold one  ;D
Second, I actually think the silver one looks a little more realistic. But if and when I get a gold one, I will definitely try it!

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. Today I will be updating this thread with new pictures/writeup.

Ok, so first we had the Elite Paladins who are the top ranking combat unit. Next we have my other cavalry unit, simply called the Black Knights. These knights you may call "light cavalry", though they are actually very well outfitted as far as helmetry and weaponry. They do not have heavy armor however, as they are designed as a combination of speed and fighting strength. They are able to cover far distances rather quickly. They are lead by an elite knight named Sir Godfrey who is also easily recognizable by his slightly different appearance. These units are very effective especially against siege engines, and missile units (crossbowmen, longbowmen, archers). However they are an excellent all around fighting unit combining their speed advantage with their weaponry. They are all armed with pikes making them a lethal cavalry unit against really most other infantry units and hold their own against heavier cavalry. They also are armed with sword belts making them even more "all purpose".

Another great unit BKRealm!

Could you please give us your unit amounts as well. I am very interested in the way you are distributing your numbers!

The Golden Chainmail hair shouldn't be that hard to get a hole off. I should have a spare somewhere if you can't get one easily. PM me if you need it :)

Post by: BlackKnightsRealm on January 05, 2011, 02:37:15
thanks gis! My unit amounts are for the most part pretty evenly distributed right now since I am early on in my collecting and have been having alot of fun customizing my less ordinary type units. In the future obviously I plan on having mostly infantry troops (swordsmen and ax-men) since that is most realistic. Probably more knights than paladins since they are the "elite". Tomorrow I will be posting the next group of units!

Grangel good to have your stamp of approval!!  ;D
We certainly accept your invitation as your loyal allies. Have you completed a central castle/town for your Golden Dragon realm? My Queen will be escorted by some of our top lords and knights as well as the next unit group I will post today( thanks for the segway), the Palace Guard.

Palace Guard

Not normally part of the standing army. Obligation is to protect the castle, it’s inhabitants, goods, and most of all the lords, royals and wealth of the realm from invasion. Armed with pikes, black shields and sword belts. While in the castle, these units rank higher than regular infantry and are normally accompanied in castle protection by longbowmen who function both in castle protection and are part of the standing army. The Palace Guard is led by Sir Roderick who has served the Crown since his youth and is recognized by the general populous as being the "Protector of Avelina".

The palace guard looks really good BKRealm!!

So I assume one of the women in that picture is Avelina. Who is the other...I think she was already in the background of one of the other pictures as well...would love to hear more background story on these two lovely ladies :-)

Sorry I wasnt clear on that! Avelina is the name of my capital city/town where the castle is. The lady in white is young princess Julianna. Lady in purple is her mother, Queen Rhoswen.

Hi

Your palace guards look great.

It would be great to see a Diorama with your whole army in formation at once with perhaps a castle and such.

Longbowmen

These units are part of the standing army as well as essential to castle defense. Armed with longbows that send arrows harder and farther than the normal sized Playmobil bows, these archers are lethal when used properly. In the Black Dragon army, the longbowmen actually rank a step above regular infantry. All of the longbowmen are well trained in swordfighting and are equipped with sword belts as well as longbows. Once the enemy is no longer in range of arrow attacks, the longbowmen are certainly not useless nor defenseless being excellent swordsmen as well. The longbowmen are led by Sir Averey who is a knight from Avelina who is the one dressed in purple.

If it helps... uniformity was very uncommon during the Medieval ages... ;)
So having 1 or 2 other helmets to mix up with those wouldn't hurt.

ehhh yea i know this but to me having the units completely uniform is way more fun and impressive to look at. also makes it more difficult for the collector (me) to have high numbers of each unit, which in turn is part of the fun of it for me anyway.

Very true, WarriorOfToys, but I agree with BlackKnightsRealm that uniformity amongst armies is quite impressive, which is why I like the Romans so much! :roman:

BlackKnightsRealm, I'm very impressed with all of your units and look forward to seeing your other ones and a giant army shot too!  You've put a lot of thought and care into your customs and it shows.  So far my favorite unit is the palace guard, but your longbowmen, heavy cavalry, and light cavalry are all very impressive.

My army was going to be the same

So it's available from the new Falcon Knights 4868 and 4869! It should also be available through DS...but probably not yet in the US :-(

DS is Direct Service!

There is a while section dedicated on it:

It's basically Customer Service from Playmobil where you can order replacement parts and also extras of parts you need.

Well I have completed the ranked units in my army and we will not cover the common soldiers.

Today I will be discussing the siege engineers.

Siege Engineers

Regular infantry units who operate artillery engines such as battering rams and catapults. Armed very light with regular chest armor, helmets, and have sword belts. These soldiers are specially trained in using these types of machines as well as castle defense machines. They are experts in siege warfare as well as siege defense. Not only having a knowledge of siege machinery but also medieval age knowledge of fire, explosives and chemistry. Most of what these soldiers do involves the use of both hands, making shields, heavy armor, and weaponry cumbersome. Instead, they are simply armed with sword belts.

Yes!
Construction of Medieval Siege Weapons
Medieval Siege warfare and building Medieval Siege Weapons was an extremely expensive business! All sieges had to be carefully planned and the exact type and number of Medieval Siege Weapons had to be established. Medieval Lords, knights and their Siege Engineers identified the weakest parts of the Castle or town that they needed to attack and planned the design of the siege engines accordingly. A workforce including carpenters and Blacksmiths had to be transported to the site. The surrounding area was checked out for materials and supplies. Armed men and soldiers were expected to help prepare for the siege by helping to build the siege weapons and engines. Many elements needed to be taken into consideration when designing Medieval Siege Weapons

Nay, you shall be defeated.
Like waves upon a rock cliff your hoards of Playmobil will wash upon our shields and die,
Drowning in your sea of blood.

And songs will be written about the great heros who fought and died,
But no song shall be as greatly sung as those for the Warriors of Rutileo.

My dear friend i like your peacefull Kingdom and your happy inhabitants but your tongue is long enough for a kingdom that i can crush only with my Vikings infantry.I think that Giorginetto infuence have poisoned your mind.I shall let your insulting words to pass and step aside as a friend.

In the other hand if you insists on your previous words, look well our steel because it will be the last thing that your soldier will see.

I too wish for peace. I fight with Giorginetto for specific political reasons you know of.
Peace friend, I only jest. ;)

looking forward!

i tried the armour belt method and it works well enough for me, but do you think it might damage the belts over time?

As you are a good customizer you could use a hair dryer to make the belts more elastic in order to avoid any cracks on the belts.Using the typical belt like that you can also combine it with the sloulder belt and give to your playmo 3 or 4 spare points for equipment( look my thread "New Leaders for my army"

Knights of the White Swan Order.
These knights belong to an upper class social elite order who are of the same kingdom as the Fleur de Lis and Yellow Tower herald.
