Title: Custom Details and How To - Simral and the Santa
Post by: Tiermann on December 25, 2010, 22:44:00
Hi,
Here is the promised thread with some details about the customs and photography in my Simral and the Santa story.

First off here are the elves:

Simral and Willy have had their heads swapped so that they have  different hair color than the stock elves. Boss has had a beard added from the 5 Dwarf add-on 7849 - no known part number

Here is the Snow Queen

Her body is from the Bride in the Victorian carriage set 30 14 0600 - Bride (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-14-0600)

The hair has been swapped for a black version in the same style
Her crown and scepter are vintage pieces from some set such as 3568 - Hofstaat (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3568) that I had on hand.
The cape is 30 64 5050 - Cloak, full-length with collar (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-64-5050) from the 3976 Christmas Market advent calendar

Here is the Palace main structural element

I took the structure from 5756 - Unicorn Fantasy Land (http://www.playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=5756) that I absolutely hated

I spray painted it - it took multiple coats to get over that dark pink and purple. I used the Krylon Fusion paint in white and the silver is Krylon Metallic Enamel - Silver. The silver covered beautifully and ended up being used on the accessory parts as well. The sparkly roof parts were done by painting white acrylic paint by hand and then while the paint was wet sprinkling on a white/clear type glitter and patting it into the paint. The detailing on the structural carving was painted by hand using an acrylic silver paint.

Another large element from the same set 5756 was the waterfall base piece. I used the same white spray paint on it.

The silver spray paint was used on these other items as well

30 20 5000 - Chair, straight back, ornately carved (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-20-5000)

30 20 4960 - Stool legs, fancy carving (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-20-4960)

30 08 6980 - Throne (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-08-6980)

30 20 4670 - Harp, large (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-20-4670)

For the main throne piece I used the pieces from the Fairytale Palace throne.

This consists of a number of parts. I spray painted the gold insert to silver
30 20 7160 - Throne back, fan-shape (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-20-7160)
and painted the main pieces white
30 63 9180 - Throne rear wall, round lobed shape (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-63-9180)
30 63 9170 - Throne base (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-63-9170)
The blue jewel parts were left as they came since the color worked so nicely
30 20 7170 - Throne decoration, ring of knobs (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-20-7170)
30 20 7180 - Jewel, oval (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30%2020%207180)

You can see in this closer view that I hand painted with silver the gold decorative carving parts of the back wall. I also painted in the ribbed center part and the detailing around the outside edge.

All of the photography for this story was done in my living room. You can see in these views I have a large 4 by 4 foot (about 1.3 meters square) panel to work on. I used white fleece fabric as the base with plastic bags wadded up and put underneath it in the rear to make the hills. I moved the bags around to change the shapes of the hills for different shots in the story. The Palace set was set up first and all the shots there taken, then it was moved out and the workshop set built.

You will notice a wall section laying there in front. That is what I used for the photos taken through the door into the workshop. I was thinking very much about stage - TV - movie set design when I built this up.

As you see the workshop is just 2 walls built to a 2 story height out of Steck parts. The detailing parts come from lots of different sets. With 4326 - Woodshop Class (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4326) being the most recent. The child size table and stools are great for the elves and the other details like the drill press worked great in this industrial type setting. If you have questions about any specific parts just ask and I will let you know where they came from.

the Santa with the back panel open was a custom bit I did last year for my Santa Castle
With the story planned for this year I just didn't have time to do more than the photo sets you see here. I originally had plans for a cafeteria scene but ran out of time to do it. Maybe next year.
That's it for this batch of images. Thanks for looking

I just LOVE the palace of the snow queen. That set was so hideous before, but now it's beautiful! Amazing what a little paint can do!  ;) And the peacock throne! It's fabulous! I like it so much better than the original colors.

Thanks, Tim, for that look behind the scenes which was very informative and helpful.

The ice queen is excellent, the old crown and sceptre in silver being just the final touch of detail.  The ice palace detail is excellent too and a great improvement on the original.  Maybe Playmobil should take note.

On a photographic point, what lighting set up did you use, please?

Yes, the crate is the one Playmofire posted.
For lighting I used the room lights that are flourescent combined with a 500 watt halogen torchier floor lamp set next to the display to bounce light off the ceiling. Adjustments were made in Photoshop Elements using the Levels window.

¿And those two are the size of a clicky? It’s VERY important to get it right the first time for this project…

I can verify that the blue one down below it with the identical description is about the size of a klicky. Don't know about the yellow one for sure, but I would think it's the same size.

thanks tim for all of your time and photos explaining everything.  just curious, when you bought the unicorn fantasy piece, did you already know what you were going to do with it?  i agree, that is the part of playmobil that i do not like, although i know little girls just love pink and purple etc, but it is sooo "my little pony".

Yes the yellow one in the pictures is that part number and will fit a klicky. For the Santa he had to be without his cuffs and a little sideways to fit properly.

When I got the set I helped justify getting it for the animals by planning on doing some sort of custom with the ugly building. I probably planned on the winter idea for a couple of years before I got into actually doing it. With all the spray painting it's best done outside in summer but you tend to not think about winter projects then.

Excellent. I was planning on doing a Cassion (the horse-drawn carriage that carries the caskets for militry funerals) but I don’t have the most important part- A casket. (I could use the coffin from Set #4211, Sleeping Princess Fairy Tale, but it has a clear lid and I didn’t entirely like that.)

I won’t get gross on you (at least not in a public posting, PM me if you want to know the full story), but short version is – Uh, not entirely…:uhoh:

Thanks alot for the behind the scenes Tim. SO many great ideas, The pink of the building is indeed a bit to much, but the purple turrets are great IMO. How did you manage to set the klickies on the blanket?

It's pretty smooth, they managed to stand on their own fine. You just have to watch out for inclines

hi. thanks for all the info. i have been wondering about the longevity of painting the playmobil plastic....how does it hold up over time? Is the fusion paint what you normally use? any tips on painting would be appreciated. I have just bought an old 3019 that is a bit discolored and I am considering how to "restore" or "redo" it.

Well how much time has to pass to qualify as holding up over time?  :D
So far it's been ok, but most of my custom pieces don't get much use. The silver I used was just a regular metallic spray paint and not the fusion and it seems to have held up just as well, and covered a little better at the initial painting.
