Greetings fellow Playmoenthusiasts! My name is Atto from Seattle/Tacoma USA. I played with Playmobil as a kid not knowing what it was, but was re-introduced to it through my love for Pirates since around 2003.
I used to be a member of an older board that went down, but I notice a lot of folks are on here now, so greetings to playmofriends old and new!
I remember Hadoque and MacGuyver off the top of my head, my apologies as I try to remember more....
In the meantime, look forward to pics of my custom Pirates of the Caribbean-inspired ships of the Black Pearl and the Interceptor, which I recently took on maiden sea voyages with an epic battle. Currently working on a 4-masted BlackBeard ship using the actual BlackBeard ship (3050?) from Playmobil.
I'm looking forward to sharing stories and photos with you all!
Cheers!

I must say that I love your customs of the Black Pearl & the Interceptor
You may be interested to check the thread on my "escapades around the UK" in the Members News section as I was lucky enough to visit one of the last remaining such ships in the port of Hartlepool, the HMS Trinconmalee :captain:
I specialize in customs of the Victorian theme and create Victorian tales.
Have fun

:welcome:Welcome to Playmofriends, from South Carolina USA, Atto :hatoff:! It's great to finally have you with us! We look forward to seeing more of your creations! I have a question for you, do you find that Playmobil ships are difficult to keep a float in actual deep water ???? I have 2 of the 4469 sea exploration ships that I tried to take pictures of in our pool this summer, but they took on water & capsized all of the time :wall:!

I have only had experience with the old 3050 style and 3286 galleon ships; the 3286 in it's stock condition is really only good for the bathtub or a calm swimming pool. Though it runs deeper than the 3050, the cannon ports are its downfall: in rough waters the cannon ports fill with water, and the ship will capsize; Playmobil must have realized just how unstable the 3286 was, so they included an added ballast which extends past the faux keel when placed in water (but you remove it for land use). But even with the extra ballast, the ship is very unstable. The main instability I find is too much weight atop the masts; the stock sails are very heavy. If you replace them with a lighter material it will fare much better. On my custom 3286 Black Pearl, I can sail her in a pool or bathtub fully loaded with 14 cannons and a ballanced crew (if you put one on one side, you must balance it with another on the opposite side). However, in rough waters I had to remove all crew and cannons AND the entire gundeck, AND make sure the cannon ports were closed: after that it sailed just fine well above the waterline :D
The 3050 is an enduring design no matter what you do to it. It is nigh unsinkable, save for the open windows in the captain's quarters. Simple fix for that: take some silicon glue and glue clear plastic to seal the windows, and it won't sink. She fares the rough waters pretty well IMO. She has a nice HEAVY internal ballast that works very well unaltered, though I did move mine more towards the bow to balance out the heavy stern castle.
I've yet to sail any of the schooners. I plan to very soon though. Oh, and I did sail the 4444 and it never capsized on me in the lake with rough waters. Whatever you do, make sure all your ships retain their styrofoam inserts; omitting them will mean a diving lesson for you if you want to retrieve them from the bottom of the lake (or even a poool), though it is fun to watch them sink :D

Thank you for your experienced information, Atto! I guess it would be difficult to produce a dual purpose ship both worthy of land & water without some complications, but I did find my experience very frustrating :hissyfit:!

I think Playmobil ships are designed for bathtubs at best, mostly because they are dual-purpose in that they have flat bottoms for playing on the living room floor, but happen to ALSO be able to float in undisturbed waters.
That being said, as far as the large tallships, I think they can be made to tread rougher waters with some modification. As I said, simply sealing off the windows in the 3050 will prevent any unwanted water coming in, as can be avoided with the 3286 if you seal off the cannon ports (even temporarily, with tape) when sailing in open waters.
As for the exploration vessels (which I've not yet played with), I gander from the looks of things that they may be a bit top heavy, and may also suffer from taking on water through pane-less windows and openings: again, same solution comes to mind: seal the openings, get rid of any unnecessary weight (including crew if need be, or at least make sure your crew dispersment upon the deck is symmetrical and as low as possible), and if possible, add either a heavier ballast ( self-adhesive lead weights, perhaps) and/or create a custom weighted keel to help stabilize your vessel. You could always fashion some sort of pontoon to your vessel and disguise it as a neighboring dolphin or some other floating accesory; I thought about doing this with the 3286 ship in the way of faux Kraken tenticals reaching up to grab it...... still searching for the perfect cepholopod toy to use; Playmobil's octopus is too small IMO.
But don't fault your playmobil ship too much I think they fall victim to the waves because the waves are not proportional to the scale of the ship; To our tiny playmoships, a minor wave is like a tidal wave by comparison, which would sink a real ship at full scale. :D

Hi Atto
:welcome: from Southern Scotland (http://planetsmilies.net/flag-smiley-7326.gif)
I sailed my red corsair on our beach earlier this year, in a large rock pool and apart from one capsize when we first started out it was OK. (I did try and keep it fairly near the side though as I didn't want to get too wet! :-[ )
