Hi!
Second thread I promised to start. A short collection of my knights customs. To begin with I'll post some older stuff from when I couldn't customise shields and figures with my own designs, then...you'll see. Just be patient and enjoy!

What a dazzling array of customs, cowabounga. I shall have to go through them all again to draw up a list of favourites.
-
Loved them all! Athena is the best!! :(o):
-
The “Rebel Rangers (http://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx266/cowabounga/Knights/P1060307.jpg)” are probably later-war soldiers; The brown uniforms, called “Butternut”, were made by dying captured Union uniforms in a butternut “soup” turning it brown. (It also coincidently turned out to have some camouflagic characteristics.)
-
I love them all! Fantastic job!
Baden
-
Link anf the Spectre is fantastic!! My favourite video game as a kid!!! Still is!!! Did you paint the spectre's head black?
I also like the helmet of the black lion knight...you took a viking helmet and cut out the eyeholes...what tool did you use Arnaud?
-
@AndyR: pure chance! I just thought these pants looked cool for a change.
@WolfKnight: for the spectre I used a broad pencil with permanent ink. To make the Black Lion Knight's helmet, just cut out the rim with a sharp blade (X-Acto craft knife), then smooth the surfaces with a nail file.
Cheers.

You've got a plethora of wonderful customs here, Arnaud! :)9

Hi guys.
It's time to feed you some more pics. In the previous posts I first showed you customs made with genuine Playmobil parts only, then some with one-colour transfers. We'll start again with some more of these, then move on to multi colour transfers and customised horse coats.
Let's go:

Just call it Saint Georges's. It's more accurate anyway.
True!!!
-
OK.
Lunch break is over, so we better get started again.
My first attempts at making shields with my own designs were actually on ink-jet printable vinyl. I had to learn some Photoshop before.
Auvergne Knight
(http://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx266/cowabounga/Knights/P1080213.jpg)
Another Swiss Knight (just found the pic, not vinyl)
Basel crossbowman
(http://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx266/cowabounga/P1080070.jpg)
As you can see the result is acceptable but: 1-you need special photo ink for your printer, so the black really appears black on the designs and not some kind of blueish dark grey.
2-vinyl is fragile and it's better if you only have straight lines and square angles to cut, the ink might come off at the edges when you cut out curved shapes.
So I reserved vinyl for my Romans' shields.
Here's a pair of Red Roman riders:
I'll show you more of those Romans in the appropriate thread.
So, I eventually found this: rub-off decals. They're expensive but really worth their price once you master the different processes. As for every ink-jet printable media (laser printers, IMHO, are NEVER reliable as far as colours are concerned) , you need to carefully choose you colour and printing settings, then preparing the transfers is tricky, then cutting out all frames with scissors and a scalpel and ruler, then applying the transfers on the parts without trapping any bubble, nor ripping or folding the transfer... and you may end with a beautiful result like this:
Or a wasted transfer like on this shield (bad outlining, the white support shows on the outside of the design).
Experience grows, hence the results are better. Here's a small gallery:

Great Customs!!!!!!!!
Congratulations!!!!!!!

Those are all very nicely done! You've got a very good touch of printing on vinyl!
-
Hi guys!
Thanks for all your comments! We shall now move on to knights on horses. Those take a lot of time to make, you have to remove all the serigraphy from the horse coats with sandpaper. It IS boring. Then you have to re-size all the designs to fit the horse coats. Then, apply the transfers on a curved surface, and you'll know why I didn't make so many!
Here we go!

what program do you use for the designs? ???

All designs were made with Photoshop.

9/10 ... knocked off a point because you customised a knight by using one of those 'diaper'-style belts :'( :'( :'(
;D ;D ;D

Those diaper-like belts are cool. And if you turn them back to front, it looks like your knight is wearing a thong! :hehe:

That smiley! >:D >:D >:D

Arnaud, they are alll beautiful !!!
Are you using water decals ??!?

really great customs :)9
-
Arnaud, they are alll beautiful !!!
Are you using water decals ??!?
Hi!
I use both rub-off transfers and water-slide decals. The water-slide decals are too thin to be used on dark surfaces (the colour of the part underneath shows through) but are really easy to apply on curved/grooved surfaces. The German Knight has a water-slide decal on his chest, and the Yellow and Swiss Knights wearing cloaks have one one their cloaks too. I only bought laser printer water-slide paper and it was a mistake for I cannot set my laser printer to print colours correctly. Though it's a CMYB printer, it will only be set on RGB AND won't print from a Mac which I use for designing... :wall: Should have thought twice before I bought this one.
-
I'm also using a Mac.
Which printer are you using ?
-
I'm also using a Mac.
Which printer are you using ?
It's a Konika Minolta Magicolor 1600W. It was really cheap, but doesn't work with the Mac OS X, so I have to record every project as a .pdf then send it to a PC to print it. Unfortunately, the printer doesn't have CMYB settings so the colours change! I could create my designs under RGB settings but the RGB colours don't match the Playmobil colours (they're always too dark).
Cheers,
Arnaud.
-
These are all so spectacular, Arnaud, that I possibly couldn't choose a favorite. Excellent work! :wow:
-
Hey guys!
Missed me? Well, I'm back anyway!
Here's a few more knights :0
They're my latest. I've been trying to expand the size of the designs on the chests and even let them cover the top of the legs for some designs.
Please, tell me what you think!
@Gis: I know you'll read this. My printer crashed. When they say you shouldn't use refilled cartridges in an HP printer, when they MEAN you shouldn't. I'll buy a new one on saturday...PM me!

Great new customs!
I especially like your use of the Egyptian shields as knight shields,
I myself was thinking of doing that,
and you have shown it is a great idea. :)
Thanks for sharing.
-
Thanks WoT!
I was sure you'd be one of the first to answer this one! My other guess was Wolf Knight but he's probably buried in his new castle for now, lucky guy!
Have you tried any custom shield yet?
Cheers,
Arnaud

Well, I tried cutting one out of wood...
But it didn't work. :P
I have made 1 or 2 tin-foil shields. :)
But I haven't done anything with stickers or paint.
However, in a couple weeks we will all see my first attempts at painting shields. :-[
So watch for that topic. ;D

Thanks WoT!
I was sure you'd be one of the first to answer this one! My other guess was Wolf Knight but he's probably buried in his new castle for now, lucky guy!
Have you tried any custom shield yet?
Cheers,
Arnaud
You're right Arnaud!!! The new castle has consumed me!!!
These latest knight of yours are trully amazing!!! Again I am happy to see that yellow is not a wasted colour for knights!!!! Really amazing work, I think my favourtie is the half falcon/half fluer de lis coat of arms!!! I also like the one with the towers!!!
Here's a thought!!! I am a fan of a fantasy book series called ''Malazan Book of the Fallen''. A leading group in the series are the Bridgeburners, a tough group consisted of fighters with different skills! Their coat of arms is a stone arched bridge, lit with ruby flames.... just to give you another idea for a sticker!!!! ;)
Always looking forward for more of your work!!
I'll work on the stickers you send me sometime next week!!!!
-
Well, I tried cutting one out of wood...
But it didn't work. :P
I have made 1 or 2 tin-foil shields. :)
But I haven't done anything with stickers or paint.
However, in a couple weeks we will all see my first attempts at painting shields. :-[
So watch for that topic. ;D
As a matter of fact, I have already tried that too. I made a half-sized wooden shield with the Playmobil Barbarian bull head for my son. I'll post a pic. But can't wait to see your work!
@WK: Take your time, Panos. Enjoy this wonderful castle of yours! Is there a known logo for your bridgeburners that I can find on the web? Or do you want me try from scratch?
Cheers,
Arnaud
-
These are amazing Arnaud! I couldn't pick just one! I like them all!!! But I would probably say that the knight with red horns and the one with the blue printed shield are the best ones!

Like I said it looks horrible.
I don't even know if I finished it, it was turning out so bad!
The tinfoil shields were cool though. :)
But the handles kept falling off, and no amount of sticky glue would hold them on. :-\
Plus they were rater flimsy and couldn't be played with too hard.
For those interested in Nuremberg Guards, you can try to make the shields,
And you can fairly easily make plate armor out of tinfoil. Its shiny! ;)
-
The Nürnberg shields are done. I used the wikipedia image along with an eagle I already had to avoid copyright troubles. I'll make one or two soldiers this week end.
Cheers,
Arnaud

I'll try to see if there is anything, but I doubt it.... The writter never bothered with pictures. Unless there is a fan somewhere out there who has designed one...

One of them, maybe not. But I'm going to have my Champion of course!
So first things first. Panos here's a first draft for your bridgeburners:
Then, inspired by Blader11 member on TJ, great great customiser:
Mongol bowmen (which? cap or bullet-shaped-helmet?)

Chinese guards

My Chinese army is growing bigger

And now some knights
Vevey

Appenzell

Bayerner Ritter
(http://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx266/cowabounga/Knights/P1090308.jpg)
That's it!
XOXO!
Arnaud
-
Arnuad I like them all but this last one is awesome!!!
Regarding the Mongols I think the blue cap looks a lot better.
Good job!!
Gaston
-
YES!!!! I Think you have captured the essence of the group Arnaud!!! Bridgeburners: First in, last out!!!
Here is the link to the wikipedia article on the Malazan Empire! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malazan_Empire
If you scroll down you'll find all the details of their history, organisation and people under Military....who knows, maybe you'll be inspired to create the whole unit ;)!
I think this guy could certainly be Whiskeyjack!!!
As for the rest wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow once again!!!
Your Nurmburg guards are amazing!!! I like the modernisation of teh symbol!!! Really good work!! Also love the Bayerner Ritter, Vevey and the awesome dragon on the shields of your chinese army!!!
-

Gaston
Thanks Gas.
IMO, the blue cap has an Asian touch to it that's interesting. Especially with this hair, 'cause it makes the cap lookk larger, but the colour is wrong, unfortunately. The bullet-shaped helmet is more "military", and maybe you noticed, I called them "bowmen": they don't even have a bow! They're merely footmen... or bannermen maybe, like Cheng would call them, aren't they?
WoT, Bolingbroke, wake up! The new knights are heeeeeere!
Panos, I'm not sure I will make an army of those, but the logo is just a sketch and maybe I can draw a cleaner one. How about the background colour? I thought it'd look like dusk...
Cheers,
Arnaud

The background colour is perfect Arnaud! Good idea and great use!
-
Awesome simply awesome sir !!!! lovely customs and great details !!!! I really like them all
-
Sorry Arnaud,
I was out playing as a knight this morning! ;D
I think they look awesome! :o
The Nuremberg Guards look great too,
their Lord is da-BOMB! ;)
I only don't like the armor you used for the guards...
Maybe instead you could use the chain-mail neck piece?
Or a cloth neck piece... I think those would look better.
Cheng,
Looks like we have someone willing to rival our armies! :o
Perhaps we should sign a treaty and unite against him! >:D ;)
-
So many axcellent designs!! Thank you so much for sharing them!
On the Mongol Bowmen: I can't exactly see how far of they are now, but I think if you have the Dark Blue of the Shields match the blue of the skullcap that would be the way to go and it would not be weird.
Your Chinese customs look great! You have any plans for Invasion (I hear there is a very cocky Emperor out and about on this forum somewhere *wink Giorginetto*)
Am I correct in the fact that Vevey is using the new Split Skirt legs?
You really did an awesome job on Balian of Ibelin with how the decal goes on on his legs!!
Your redesign of the Nuremburg Coat of Arms is really good but I must agree that the guard doesn't do it for me. The two grey and Darkgrey don't set well together and although I am a favor of that particular Armor I don't think it goes with with "naked" arms. It's very bulky so it needs the rest of the figure to be bulky too IMO.
The lord looks great although the Black Swan seems a bit out of place!
The Bayerner Ritter is a great piece, and easily my favorite! What did you use for the feather in his helmet?
-

You're right WoT. I used a torso with a front groove on which I cannot put a transfer (the surface needs to be flat), so I hid it under this huge breast plate. Maybe I can try a water slide decal on the torso and a chain mail collar? We'll see.

I've just made two real Chinese bowmen, with bows. And one more footman. And tried a black design for the Mongol shields too. You'll see that.
For the Black Swan: I know! I just wanted to use this helmet that I don't use much! A black eagle head would fit so much better! I made one for my Geneva Knight but couldn't find the figure when I made yesterday's pictures!
For the legs of the Vevey Knight: I think they're different. They're from this figure: http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-00-6632;pic_num=2.
And I think the legs from the 4871 knight are slightly different. Have to wait until my wife comes back from Switzerland with (possibly! She promised!) these new boxes! Tell you then.
The blue feather comes from the 4339 multiset!
Cheers,
Arnaud

Thanks for noticing the work on the legs of Balian, Gis! Ever since the Unicorn knights I always wanted to do it!
I'll post some pics tonight!

Definitely the blue cap!

Some darker design

This is an original
(http://i762.photobucket.com/albums/xx266/cowabounga/Knights/P1090341.jpg)
And this is a fake...
Love this one (Chimera Knight)
And now, let me introduce: Justinien Pibrac, "exécuteur des Hautes-Oeuvres de Bellerocaille", the Executioner.
He's from a French book called "Dieu et nous seuls pouvons" which means "Only God and Us can" (...kill), one of my favourites.
That's it for tonight! Sorry for the dark pics, the weather wasn't with me today; but the Force was!
Cheers,
Arnaud
-
OMG I love the executioner!!!! your best so far!!!
And yes I think the blue cap was the right choice.
Did you do all this last night? how could you? 8}
Congrats!
Gaston
-
I...did not...sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! :hellol:
-
LOL....I like your style Arnaud, it's a favorite saying of mine...I'll sleep when I am dead :-)
Your left Siamese twin is missing some stripes on his pants...or were you hoping noone would notice?? *grin*
The klickies themselves are great though...a whole regiment of them would be SCARY!!
The Chimera knight is an excellent custom, Those colours do work wel together (French & Dutch flag *cough*)
And I must say the executioner is a thing of beauty. He radiates power and a an attitude of "bleed on me all you want, it won't stain anyway!"
-

I keep telling my wife the same! Sleep when I'm dead, and it's also a song from The Best Band in the World, though not a good one admitedly.
Gasp! What are those pants? I didn't notice! How come? As soon as I get home, it's clothes inspection for everyone.
I'd like to make more of the black dragon Chinese, I bought so many of those clickies with the "fangs" for parts. I will lack round shields in a short while possibly. Gotta find a proper DS, wherever there is, and move there. Anybody heard of Greensborough, NC?
Actually, the executioner had to wear red garments according to the Law. So he could be identified instantly by everyone, including those ignorant peons. He was also not allowed to live inside the city walls and had a right to collect taxes!
-
I simply love the Chimera Knight!!!    The china soldiers are great and the caps work very nice!!!
But the dark knight, with the golden gryphon head....I adore him!!! You mean the shield is orignal right? not the klicky!
-
Yep!
I didn't have enough of those original clickies so I figured I could try a transfer there too...The colour was like hell to match.
-
Your Chimera Knight is Stupendous!!! :o
Awesome job Arnaud. :D
-
great knights, that executioner is a really intersting figure as well
-
Your additions are magnificent, Arnaud! Your Asian soldiers are very accomplished and your knights continue to get better. The Chimera Knight is my favorite. :knight:
-
Hi everybody!
Since the Chimera Knight had a lot of success, I made a horse coat (and another figure in gold armor too!)

Well that is good...

And Magnificent Heraldry. :o
I can only agree with all the other comments,
Stupendous!!! 8} 8} 8}

I know I should have changed the blue saddle for a yellow one but I was in a rush. Comments>below, please!
Cheers,
Arnaud
-
The red knight is brilliant Arnaud!!! The black lion/yellow background knight with the latest helmet is also great  !!!
I also like the red cross/black and white background/ fluer de lis knights!! They look like real defenders of good! :knight: :knight:
The knight with the bullet helmet and the nose guard is an interesting approach!
All and all excellent work once again!!!!
-
Those look fantastic! Good job. I especially like the last one.
-
This last batch of custom knights are excellent, Arnaud! :knight:
-
Amazing Arnaud! i love the black and with Flor de Lis with the red cross!!! Super cool!
-
Amazing work again Arnaud!! I like how you use both a black and white split skirt for the B/W quartered one.
The last one is also great with both the black and yellow klicky option. Would love to nake an army of those :-)
I would have put different decals on the horse head cover though...this don't fit the rest IMO.
For some reason I put my saddles the other way around...is this the proper way?
Now you have me thinking about making more customs :-)
-
Incredible!!! :wow: :wow: :wow:
I especially love your 3rd knight,
The "Dark Lion Knight!" :o
Superb job on all of them though.

I think to make him even better,
making only have of his lower surcoat (the leg section) black would be really neat. :D
(Like the PM Unicorn Knight... but black instead of blue)
-
What an incredible variety of my favourite theme!
I have a few questions - I didn't see them asked/answered in the thread, but I apologise if I missed them.
Where do you get all your knights from?
Do you use a thinner to clean any preprinted designs off them? Or do you only use bodies that have no printing already on them? Or just put the decals over existing designs?
And now for the one the question I am sure I am not the only one interested in - Can you show us some pictures of ALL your knights together?
-
Hey.
Thanks.
To be honest, I didn't make the crest and shield for the black and white knight. I bought them in Wolfsburg, the seller agreed to sell me four torsos and four shield stickers. The torso is actually printed upon, it's a different technique from mine and you need to order at least a hundred pieces to make it worth the price... :-\
@Wesley Myers: I buy the figures on eBay, or from the DS. I cannot put the transfers directly on an already printed surface, so I use either plain color parts, or I remove the older paint (sharp curved blade and sandpaper).
I can't show you all my knights together because: 1-I sold a lot, 2-I don't have enough room to display them all in my house. ;D
Cheers,
Arnaud
-

Arnaud
Give me some time to decide sire, they are so nice looking !!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

amazing work! this must have taken forever to complete all of these! would love to see some more variations of the purple dragon lord with dark armor!

New shields=new knights!

Arnaud

YAY! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
I have been waiting for these! ;D
Awesome job Arnaud. :)9
-
Hey Arnaud, I just thought of something...
Something Brilliant... :P
I issue you the challenge to recreate this picture!
I dunno about you, but I think that would rock. ;D
Of course I don't really mean exactly, or with so many people...
But I thought you could recreate the heraldry of the knights.
Then throw a couple archers in front of them and snap a photo.
Tell me what you think. :)
-
Once again superb job with the yellow colour!!!
-
Awesome design! I like those. :)9
-
Great customs Arnaud. I really like the design of the coat of the arms a lot!
I was wondering though why did you use the black unicorn on the Helm. You could have spraypainted one of the new Lions (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-21-7902) blackm which would make it more uniform?
-
Thanks all for your positive comments.
@Gis: I have painted a red lion topping black already, it just wasn't dry when I took the pictures!
Cheers.

Love the Yellow Green Falcon knight Caparisson! It looks really good, although I wonder why didn't use a matching shield?
The Old Design (Black/White) Falcon knight also looks really good, I dont know the fact that they are original Playmo crests makes them more special to me I guess.
The others are also very well designed and look great!!

These new knights and their heraldry look great, Arnaud! :knight:

I have used your beautiful stickers in order to create this knight.

Well, since I use Mongol warriors' bodies and some of the 4920 knights, it will be hard to make a big army (even though my 4920 knights cost me a lot cheaper than yours!).
But nevertheless, yes this is going to be my new coat of arms and probably my new avatar too.
Thanks all for your comments.
