i was thinking what are the reasons of retiring a set ??d with what creatiria that they produce an item for a period of time some sets were available for one year other for 5 others for 10 if an item is succesfull on sales they keep producing it for more years or there is a standard period of time that an item will be on the market?

Without renewing their product line Playmobil would be selling a lot less. As they dont want to grow their product line a series needs to go to make room for another one. I ma sure that popularity has something to do with it but also how things fir together.
I bet we don't even see, understand half the decisions that go into the process.

I'll agree with Gis... One can only speculate about their decisions.
But, I think the most important factor, and I've argued this before, is that for a toy like playmobil to sell a lot needs a constant renewal of themes and sets...in a video/computer game world, children need to see constant change in a non-digital product in order to reflect upon it and ask for it, and play with it...
Constant change is a trend in our modern society unfortunately...we as individuals, and companies like playmobil, need to constanlty manuver and adapt...

who?
this is true that for selling, a lot the themes and toys have to change but with what criteria they have a set on the market for two years and another for 10 years ?? i guess if something is succesfull they keep it for more years but ussually this happens with big sets small sets ussually don't stay on the market for a long time has this to do with the moulds or something?

I'd read somewhere that each year they retire about 100 sets to make room for 100 new ones. I assume they retire on basis of selling numbers. But if a mould of a master-mould would need replacing then that could play a role as well. Those are terribly pricey ...
It could also have something to do with replacing themes with a newer version. It seems to me that you want the shelves emptied from knights before launsching a new castle-theme.
But then again - what do I know ;)
