i wanted to ask with wich criteria does the collectors book say how rare is every item?
http://www.la-boutique.com/_files/btq_imgzoom/24799.jpg

The book says the following:
The Rating System....is only a guideline which describes the rarity of the individual items including their original packing. It does not reflect the actual collectors' value."
-
i agree but with what criteria the author uses the rarity system . how he knows how rare is an item?

I would guess based on age of the item, likely number produced and type of packaging.
-
i got it !!!when you say type of packaging you mean if it was blister ? or the different versions of the items?

The different versions, for example set number outline, set number black... (the number is an outline no black filling...and the second editions are black filling in the letters...)
-
this is what he means or the blister packages ??
-
Axel did the book together with several well-known collectors...
I guess there is not a clear set of rules as they judged the rareness by their own experience.

i see that's why some sets are considered as common and can't be found and some rare are more found but the book is in genural correct for the rarity and all the information it gives!!!!!!!!!

Hi,
Unfortunately the 3rd edition has become so big in volume that as a consequence mistakes were made in the so called 'rarity system', which is not a good word it. It is more based on popularity than on rarity. Just 2 simple examples, the 3238 'hospital accessories' (produced between 1976 and 1978) only gets 2 'ratings' in the 3rd edition, yet the 3262 (knights accessories, also produced between '76 and '78) get 3 'ratings', both are equally rare. The 3404 (v2) which is a rare set to find (in mint in box condition) only gets 3 ratings, where as the 3406 (indians) get 5 ratings, both were made in the same timespan. There are unfortunately some big mistakes like giving the 3589 and 3590 (space) only 1 rating, they are both from 1980 (!!!). As a mint in box collector I contributed a lot of photos to the 3rd edition, unfortunately not enough time was spend on correcting the 'ratings' which to me are only based on popularity (sought after among collectors), how can you otherwise explain rating the 5360 victorian park fence with 6 ratings (which is ridiculous) while this set is offered almost every single week on ebay over the last 2 years. How can you compare that with giving a 3590 (only produced for 2 years in the early eighties) with 1 rating (!) ? I hope the 4th Collector will leave out this 'rating system' or will present a 'rating system' which is truly based on rarity.
Regards,
Eddy

So maybe it's not so much rarity as collectability.

Yes, but unfortunately a lot of collectors and sellers (on ebay) use the Collector as a reference and also regard this 'rarity' system as a fact, which is a bit misleading. Well just my two cents.
-
Its more as Gordon says! Collectors and sellers define what they want to define as more, or less, collectable...and that does not include rarity, rather what a collector wants or needs to collect....
-
Hi,
Yes, but in the foreword/introduction of the Collector Axel talks about 'rarity' and that is not the case.

yes all the things you 've reaserched are correct we can not know how many pieces of an item are available . but there is a mistake here we say what it is around from what is sold on ebay most of the newer sets don't even appear on ebay from 2004 let's say that have 1 rating only because people don't really want them the older sets that are wanted seller try to find them because they know that they will be sold is very high prices!!!1
