Title: A steck castle project on hold....
Post by: Wolf Knight on April 05, 2010, 21:44:13
Hello everyone...

I'll post two pictures of the main building in my castle complex.... This was done a year ago.... unfortunately, due to lack of resources, but most importantly space at that time, plus the fact that i had decided to move at a house of my own... the project has not proceded beyond this point..... Its a start... I now have the resources and a bit more space, but not the time.... hopefully I'll make some one of these days....

I'll post two pictures of the main building in my castle complex....

Your main building is exquisite, WK!

The rest of your castle should be a real beauty to behold.

Hopefully, you'll find the time (and the resources) to complete it!

Thank you for sharing your photos.

All the best,
Richard

Ah, your castle is quite something :wow: :wow: :wow:
I now may need to re think my own castle that I am building at the moment if it is to stand a chance against your magnificent archetectural and construction skills. At the moment mine would just get dismissed as a 3666 even though I have put 3 castle sets into it :(

That's a wonderful start to your castle, Wolf Knight.      Be patient until you have the time so that you can realise your grand design to perfection.  After all, real castles were also years in building.

You got me going again guys... I took the castle down and dismantle it a bit so that we can see its foundations....I found out that a few changes were in order regarding the walls so that the floors could be supported....

(http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/2/4/7/baldthar/f_grpn3os5m_ab8b6b6.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

I am hopping to fit the large 2x2 units floor http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-03-9800 in all these square spaces and i am already waiting for quite a few to arrive....

What i had done previously was not as well designed as this new idea because there were 1x2 units  http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-02-8470 involved, as well as some of these   http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-07-6150 http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-07-6820

Anyway, I got a good start again and I have to thank you all for your encouragement!!!! I'll let you know how it turns out slowly...

That is not expensive...Its really good price....
Especially when other ebay sellers sell a single of these for 0.99...so if you buy 8 of these 0.99x8=7.92....

True, 3666 and other sets give you a wide variety of pieces...but they are so few.... so we need sellers who sell seperate pieces and on large quantities!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Moreover, his postage rates are reasonable...and he is quick. I have his items withing the week.

First time i bought from him, although the parcel had arrived wihtin the week, the postman never delivered a note to pick it up....three weeks went by when i finally got really curious and visited the post office to enquire... and thankfully to collect...

Bought some more steck rare pieces yesterday . The wooden frame that is on 3448 3448 which has pillars and holes . Bought 6 of them , pricey . Anyways , this is Sir Wolfs thread so c' on Wolf Showus your castle !!!! ;D

That is a really great pice of steck!!! i've only have one from the original 3455....

Ok so here is the ground floor... I had to remove some stone walls, cut and glue with blue tack some floors (as i do not like glue being permanent on playmoil steck), and support the above floors with the middle stone wall....

(http://img38.imagefra.me/img/img38/6/4/17/baldthar/f_grpn3pu2m_9179428.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

The door at the far right corner is the stable for the king's steed...and maybe its mate...
I'd hope for the back rooms to be the kitchen and other facilities and warehouses as such....the front rooms can be used eirher as armories or treasuries...
Title: Re: A steck castle project on the hold....
Post by: Wolf Knight on April 17, 2010, 07:59:31
the first floor will be used as a throne room/council room...maybe even a ball room...
(http://img40.imagefra.me/img/img40/6/4/17/baldthar/f_grpn3pu3m_c8bef12.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

In the front window section, i had to cut the four connectors on each side of the window piece, thus to make it possible to stand close at the wall behind it...too bad there are no four way connectors for steck caslte pieces...

I still need to add few little pieces for details....

Great castle Panos! :wow: :wow: :wow:

Although it does look a bit easy for attackers to get in!

(as i do not like glue being permanent on playmoil steck)

Same here, I just recently bought a 3450 from ebay and it had all been glued together (I obviously wasn't aware of this). The plates had been glued to the table, the table glued to the floor, the floor to the walls and the walls to whatever the previous owner had used as a baseboard. I contacted the seller who offered a full refund if I sent it all back but I declined as there were the good rare parts in it so I just decided I would try and clean the glue of myself :)

A 3450!!! WOW!!! My cousin had this and used to play when we were 8 or 10 years old.... I asked him last year if he still had it, he said he could not remember and that he had to check...After a few days he said that he could not find it anywhere and that he must have given it away, or my aunt threw it away.... :'( :'( :'( :'( You did good to keep it, even glued it has its greatness of being the first playmobil castle!!!

Great progress Wolf Knight! Would steck allow you to create a Great Hall with double height walls or do you need the cross pieces for support? I really like the layout you have chosen and it is coming along very nicely!

Thank you Gepetto!!! To answer your question...I think both!!! It would be easier to make support and create a higher room...

In my Kiungs quarter's which is very similar to Sir Wolf's  i had 3 levels of 6 rooms each but with walls inbetween ( using up lots of my doors !!!) , i will be replacing many of these with double wooden open frames  and i think either way the inbetween support makes the structure more strong ( due to torsional rigidity as civil engineers woudl call it i think ) . I attempted making a room without any in between support , found it not as stable as the prev mentioned design .  0)

No, its not easy to make a structure stable if you do not have a support of some kind...The wals and doors are fine but they take up a lot of functional space...just placing these wooden frames makes lot more space to use and move the klickies....

You are a better builder than me Sir Wolf ! I tried building my steck kings quartrs as you rightfully said without in between support and it collapsed so many times !!! I have bought additional open double wooden frames and i agre with you having walls with doors is a waste of space ( and doors ...) . Look forward to see you designs Sir !  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I have managed to put my Steck fever in check for now...
Trying to focus more on buying klickies now, not castles.

I tried buying a 3666 from ebay Germany,
But the buyer said the shipping would be 50 eros! :o
That was almost as much as he was selling the castle for! ::)
Does it really cost that much to ship to America?

And I tried buying another item, just a tent, and the shipping was still 50 eros!
Doesnt the weight of the package determine the shipping?

It does seem a lot!!! I usually pay around 20 euros.... a 3666 weights 5 kilos, so that is from germany to greece 23 euros, two 3666 castles weight ten...shiping was actually 37 euros but, as i am a good customer...the seller shipped them for 17.5
I'll check prices with the hellenic postal services....I've never sold anything so i do not know the shipng costs from greece to anywhere else...

Thank goodness for day offs!!! I am so tired from work so I managed to relax a bit today with my playmobill... Although I spend most of my time tiding up a lot of steck pieces I could not pass this opportunity and create a building for my castle...

I give you the City Guard Headquarters... I see it as a revised 3444 city guard set with more rooms and floors...
(http://img38.imagefra.me/img/img38/6/5/4/baldthar/f_grpn3qpym_923d40a.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

I intend to add banners and shiled emblems once I decide which group will I choose as a city guard... I have already three candidate groups one is certainly the king's personal guard, the second is the guards from 3666 (most likely to be city guards) and the third groups is the guards from 3659 and 3674 who I actually intend to use as a castle guard...
(http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/6/5/4/baldthar/f_grpn3qpxm_823e2b2.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

The rooms as I am planning to use will be, ground floor armory and/or stables, first floor restrooms or the captain of the guard office and the attic....we'll see about the attic...

I did not have the time to put the church together I'm afraid....but i can give you a taste of what is to come...
The church unfortunately is not a steck church (dissapointed faces I gather?) Its the 4296 church from the wedding theme, and I did repaint it grey to make it look more medieval....I only need to finish the belltower now...and it is tricky....

Well playmofriends..the long wait (for the church only i'm afraid) is over...

I must say i am not very thrilled with the result...as i was expecting a lighter version of grey...this is actually a blueish grey and its the same colour that the dragonland towers have!!!
(http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/6/5/9/baldthar/f_grpn3qs5m_15d02f3.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)
And as we said in other threads these wholes do look bad... i am thinking of adding gargoyles on them.... maybe the dragon heads from the dragonland towers...30 20 4642 - Gargoyle dragon head and upper jaw (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-20-4642)

What is most impressive with this set are the windows...
(http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/6/5/9/baldthar/f_grpn3qswm_9489f88.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

If you pay more attention to detail you'll see the playmobil children faces of a boy and a girl on the vitro...

(http://img38.imagefra.me/img/img38/6/5/9/baldthar/f_grpn3qsym_7ce6927.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

The church organ is a nice touch although not really sure there were any of these in medieval times...were there? I cannot remember...

As quoted from wikipedia : ''In architecture, a gargoyle is a carved stone grotesque with a spout designed to convey water from a roof and away from the side of a building. ''

There are a lot of interesting information on that page...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gargoyle

The playmobil gargoyles are these...30 20 4642 - Gargoyle dragon head and upper jaw (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30%2020%204642)

An idea for gorgoyles is to use the small dragons in golden colour found on the latest versions of weapon stands . a few of these would do this job nicely and i think tehir size is quite good considering scales etc etc  ;)

I've thought of them too Giorginetto and i've seen them somewhere used at the same manner...only cannot remember where....
But i'm afraid their positioning might be difficult on the flat wall, they would do better around the bellfry!!!

A very interesting project Panos. I had also invested in two of these churches, with the idea of using them as a "Cathedral base" for my crusaders,  but hadn't considering painting them...yet.

The holes sadly do detract greatly from the "finished" look, and this is one reason I prefer Steck to System X. The gargoyle idea would work well for the outside walls, but what about the inside holes?

Much as I dislike the newest clip system for its inability to be customised or deconstructed, it does at least do away with most of the construction holes. Of course Steck did away with ALL the construction holes, so once again it's the superior system for finished looks, as well as adaptability.

The church organ is a nice touch although not really sure there were any of these in medieval times...were there? I cannot remember...
The first instrument to be recognized as an organ was the hydraulis, invented in Alexandria in the third century BC by the Greek engineer, Ktesibios.  By the 2nd century AD, the bellows had replaced the pumps and water regulator of the hydraulis.  The knowledge of the organ was lost in the west after the fall of the Roman Empire (in the fifth century AD.)  By 760, the organ had returned to the west.  The earliest preserved keyboard music is from around 1325.  This picture, an Italian instrument, is from the late 1600s.

they could use system x but fill in the parts where the holes are! this would be very expensive i think if they did it for every set they use the stickers instead but don't look so good if painted

A crusaders cathedra Martinl!!! Me like!!!!!!

I am trying to find a cheap 4835 and looking to make a bargan in small toy stores...this will be my priority saturday morning...if i get the day off... I have four of those little golden dragons...one for each corner of the bellffy....

I also thought of using plasticine to cover the inside holes and openings, making it later smooth with a sandpaper and then repaint in this colour....

I totaly agree with you Martin on your steck verdict!!! Yet, there are limitations to even this type of construction system.... and i also agree on your points about the new clip system...I love those dragon towers...not being able to get customised makes the unique....a point that can be seen in the 4294 lighthouse....

Plasticine is modeling clay. Can be found in modeling and hobby shops... i could also use silicone based plasticine...not the simple plasteline used in kindergardens, probably that is what you thought???...

Lucky lucky me!!! One of the small toyshops that I am visiting and buying playmobil regularly has a big dragonland castle on display. I went there yesterday to buy a couple of specials but i also saw two last pieces of the red dragon canon 3320, andas there is always need for artiliery, i bought them. When i asked what will happen to the castle in the front, they said they want to give it to me as present because I am a good customer!!!!  :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: Now I can have the gargoyles for my church and the dragon knights for my armies!!!! Never have i been given a present by any shop!!! only discounts and those were few...

Very nice!

Just to clarify: you attached the gargoyles with plasticine, or do they actually work with System-X connectors?

Either way, the church looks very good -- well done!

Cheers,

AndrewL

Hi Andrew!!!
I did it with plasticine for the time being. System x connectors do not fit the back of the gargoyles...unless I cut around their edges, i think then the connector will fit. I am reluctant to cut though..  I think I will remove the plasticine (perhaps reduce it a bit so not too much is visible... or put a more permanent material...I think i can use acrilic or silicon plaster...I will also use it to fill the holes and gaps that system x has on parts and pieces...and then paintit with the same grey again...

I've thugh of that Alex, therefore these gargoyles are only decorative, not all gargoyles were used for driving the water away... The gold ones are from set 4153.... I have not decided what to do with the clock yet...

Man, what a beauty. Great work Panos. Both on the project as a whole as well as on the customization job on the church.

I dont mind the clock to much on the Church tower however the white of the stickers makes it look less medieval.

Overall great job and looking forward to seeing the rest coming to life.

Luckily for you you already have lots (and lots and lots) of steck to play with. I am just getting started. Bidding on a 3666 now which should really make a nice start to a possible steck collection.

Are there any rules in place for bidding on items other members are also bidding on. Just wondering if there are any official or social rules in play for this?

Cant wait to see you 10 x 3666s Sir Knight !!! That will be quite something surely . On the subject of steck castles i have started designing mine with more internal walls and more tall round towers and square towers and more houses that the original one I have posted here . i look forward to your  designs as i am kinda stuck with many questions  how to build my medieval city and castle, the biggest question being building two walls ... the outside one of one level high with many square towers and the second one from the inside with two level wall . i think such a design has strong links to the byzantine walls of Constantinoupoli  and I considering it seriously for my new castle, will need  quuuuuite a  bit more steck i must say for this design !!!! But two walls , that will be a feast for the eyes wouldnt it ????? ;D ;D ;D ;D

Two walls would be indeed a great feature Giorginetto!! I am anxious to see them.... You will have to show me drawings, if you made any...I'll think about it maybe i can come up with something too... Always excited to work with steck!!!

...edit... I am attaching a photo of the theodosian walls I found on line....

And then a photo of the byzantine walls of my city, Thessaloniki... Who were never double couriously...

Well finally a little rest payed off!! I did not take a very detailed photo (i will do shortly), and it is not finished yet, but here is the main gate, or West Gate as I like to call it, for my project!!!
It beards the coat of arms of the king and the banners of the steward and the city guard!! On the left hand, as we see the picture, is the office of the gatekeeper and on the right, the barracks of the gate guard...

Awsome West Gate Wolf Knight!!!
It looks really good, I can't wait to see it attatched to the rest of the city.

One day I will build a large steck city and fill it a bit like Wolf Knight's...
Attatching houses to the sides of the city with only a few twords the middle,
Giving lots of room for fighting! ;D

I have spend five years as a student in Cantebury, Kent and I as thrilled by the city's beauty and its medieval history!!!

Here are some pictures attached!! (n the third image you'll see the Westgate Grove...it really reminds my of playmobil medieval houses!!!

Hope to see your work of a steck project soon!!!

Ok so here are a few more photos of the West Gate!

An aerial view... I've added the two three level towers left and right..the gate is a narrow one...more easily defended and the taller towers provide better protection from an elevated position!!!
(http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/6/6/8/baldthar/f_grpn4kg0m_95b68b3.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

This is the gatekeeper's office...every visitor has to ''check in''... there are spies of the molevolent Duke lurking around... the good king must be very cautious of who enters his city!!
(http://img38.imagefra.me/img/img38/6/6/8/baldthar/f_grpn4kgsm_6b67558.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

And a view of the rooms...ground floor is the office...second floor is the restroom. I should also add a holding cell...
(http://img37.imagefra.me/img/img37/6/6/8/baldthar/f_grpn4kgum_a0b946b.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)

And the West Gate guard house...its walls offer more fortification as a second higher wall...
(http://img40.imagefra.me/img/img40/6/6/8/baldthar/f_grpn4kgrm_f2f4ac2.jpg) (http://imagefra.me/)
maybe i should replace those windows with plain walls...

And a look at the rooms: ground floor is stable and armoury, second floor restrooms/commonrooms

Well, its been sometime but I finally managed to build an inn for my city!

I shall call it the Tabard Inn, after Gordon's suggestion of the inn in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales!!!
I also thank Elaine for finding and showing me some pictures from the internet on how the actual inn looked like!

I have to say that I was planning for a L shaped building, with an extended balcony but lack of parts and craftsmanship (did not really want to get involved in cutting and gluing like Emma did so brilliantly in her Tudor manor) led me to the following design (see attachment) I still like the way it came out to be!

The ground floor will be the bar and serving/eating area (perhaps a small office of the owner too). There are stairs leading up to the resting areas and rooms, as well as the attic.

Maybe later, I'll make a small stable to place near the inn.
Title: Re: A steck castle project on hold....
Post by: Wolf Knight on July 22, 2010, 20:04:05
And of course a few pics of the work in progress... As I wrote earlier, I wanted this to be an L shaped building...but guess what...this would happen if there was a four way connector...hope we get that soon, so send the letter everyone!!!

So, in the attachments we have groundfloor, (you will actually notice that in the final image of the structure, i've replaced the side groundfloor house walls with stone walls!) first floor, and the addition of flooring and balcony rails...

Title: Re: A steck castle project on hold....
Post by: Wolf Knight on July 22, 2010, 20:08:11
I was not sure what roof to use so i tried both the corner roofs and the straight triangular sides...

I believe the first choise, and the one that was used, is better than the triangles...

Once I decide which tabard to hang as a signpost outside the door, I'll post a fianl image at ''building in my castle project'' thread!!!

Hope you enjoy it!!! Thanks for the ideas and support everyone!!!

Hi Richard!!!

I will be placing funitures and klickies to the inn, and the rest of the buildings in the castle/medieval town project, eventually when it is all over! I am not sure it will be any time soon as there is more planning to be bone, more time and space to be devoted!

But eventually i'll get there!!!

So glad you liked it!!! Thanks for your positive comments!!

Your Inn is a wonderful piece of Work Sir Wolf!

After looking at yours I think I will need to add some extra space and a Balcony to mine as well. That really adds Class!!

I thought you were aksing about the lovely Inn of yours !!!!  :-[ :-[

Well i think the fortifications is a must . i would refrain from building double high as this would make any attack , siege tower worthless and its a shame as a set up with these towers is always so imppressive !!!!

Fortifications, fortifications sir. Then my advice would be to create a market area stalls and buildings and then a knights barracks !!!!

Thanks for the Giorginetto, the word barracks crossed my mind 3 times while writing my post but obviously I forgot to include it in the end.

Sit Wolf , I think barracks is a good suggestion *grin*

Barracks, defiantly! :)
I cant wait to see,
And Giorginetto is right, those arches are a very good idea for the barracks.
There are of course four main things a barracks needs.

1: A weapons and armor store room
2: A feast hall (not too fancy)
3: Sleeping courters
4: A large fenced area for practice, it needs to be big enough for several downsized units to move around and practice formations and mock battles

Very cool, I cant wait to see!!!! ;D
(Especially with Klickies!!!)

Thanks for you ideas Warrior!!!  ;)  :) :)

Sad day today...I had to dissasemble my West Gate... Kinda filled up the living room space and was fed up seeing it unfinished... Now I've really placed this project on ice...Maybe for day that I'll have a good space to start all over again...

But, I almost organised my army...

Not really. ;)
I always fought my friend in lines. But he had all his troops in a giant hoard.
It made easy pickings for my archers,
And flank attacks were too easy! ;D
