Has anybody here insured their Playmobil collection?
My wife and I are going over house insurance details for our new property, and I have the option of insuring a "Toy Collection" for $1 annual premium for every $100 of value. It's hard to put a true value on my collection, because most of it would be impossible to replace like for like anyway, but I'm guessing around $5,000 would be ballpark.
Has anybody suffered an Playmobil wipeout disaster, or am I being paranoid? Barring fire or theft I can't see a way of losing the whole collection in one go. My Klickies laugh in the face of floods and earthquakes.
-
Hi Martin,
I personally wouldn't insure my Playmobil collection. My reasoning is that nobody is going to steal them and if there is a fire, the destruction of my klickies is probably the least of my problems.
-
I added my collection to my insurance due to weather, storms, fire, etc. My insurance rep. asked me if I had a "collection" & I told them yes, with an approximate value using Ebay as a price basis for replacement due to alot of items being rare & irreplaceable! It has taken me years of effort to amass this crazy collection, & if something were to happen to it I would at least like to be compensated for its value & not just loose everything. You would be surprised of your collections value like some people that collect Dept. 56, Snowbunnies, Snowbabies, Matchbox cars, Hot Wheels, Coca Cola or Pepsi memoribilia, & those collections are high dollar too!

I recall that MansionBuilder lost his collection in a fire.

With the prices Playmobil can command on eBay and new in the shops, I wouldn't bet on that.

I lost my collection I had as a kid in a fire and it was a lot
When My collection was at my parents attic shewas insured for fire and teft
I cannot remember how much I payed but it was a lot

Hi Martin -
My opinion is that this type of insurance is all about your own peace of mind. If insuring your collection would increase your peace of mind, then definitely consider purchasing it. You could also "self insure" by putting the annual cost of insurance into a savings account. Or you could just spend the annual insurance premium on more Playmobil! >:D
-
Thanks Indy and all for your replies.
I think as Indy says it's about peace of mind, and for around $1-2 a week it's worth it, after all that's less than I spend on new Playmobil to extend the collection. I insured the Playmobil on its journey over from the UK, so I may as well insure it again now it's here.
When I have everything in one place it'll be easier to judge the value, I may be well under in my assessment of how much I really have, and with klickies costing around $2-3 each (unless you get a bargain blister) it soon mounts up.
The whole question of insurance started because our most valuable single item is my wife's hand-built anglo concertina, which we reckon would cost about $9000 to replace, and anyway there's a four year waiting list. I have several off the peg instruments, the most valuable my $2000 melodeon. We never insured our instruments separately from the house insurance in the UK, but we probably should have.

I thought about putting money back to self insure too, Indianna, but I was never able to reach the point that a 3526 fire engine going for over $185.00 in good used condition was going for to replace the 10 that I have, along with all of the other items I have obtained! Alot of the items I have are now retired with their boxes still intact, & when I see them appear on ebay it amazes me of the selling prices they command :o so replacement would be near impossible without being insured!

Back in 1998 i lost all the boxes from a flood in my parents country house. Home insurance is not widespread in Greece, meaning it is not even obligaory by any law as i think it is in the UK.
Thankfully all my playmobils were intact but covered in moist...It took me a couple of days clean up sets like the 3740 schooner, the 3750 pirate ship, the 3799 pirate island, 3055 pottery house, 3445 castle tower and loads of knights and police sets... :'( :'( still mourn for those boxes...

So you actually calculated your collection's value based on the initial payments you made for all of them???

There's no law requiring house insurance, either structure or contents. The nearest you get to this is that mortgage lenders will require borrowers to insure the structure of the property they are borrowing money to buy. I've attended a number of fires where the owners or tenants had no insurance, either not realising how much their possessions were worth or believing "it'll never happen to me".

Yes you're right Gordon! Thus, common knowledge and logic dictates...

We were told by our agent that any collection or single item $5,000 or under would not need an individual rider, we purchased a rider for my wife's fiddles at the time and my tools but everything else was covered under the general policy. It is a good idea to photo or itemize items if you have more than 'normal' without it being a special collection.

Good point Gepetto, and I don't want to pay for the same things to be insured twice, 'cos I'm sure they wouldn't pay out on two claims for the same stuff.
When I get the space to spread out I'll do a tot up of what I actually have, and see if my $5,000 estimate is anywhere close. As Bill highlights, much of it is worth more than it was when bought new, but I'll have to do an estimate at around $3 a figure and see how many figures I have. Add vehicles and larger accessories, and buildings, and $5,000 doesn't seem like much.
Sorry for your lost boxes Wolf Knight. Your story does highlight that most Playmo is fairly indestructible, but the boxes themselves have value to some people and they can be ruined by damp. Generally I keep the boxes only for storage purposes.
-
I am sure once you start unpacking that the $5,000 figure will fade away! Just don't let your wife see the final amount!! :(o): :(o):

Fortunately my Playmo collection pales into insignificance beside the cost of her concertina, and all her photography equipment, not to mention the tools she plans to get for her woodworking shop, and her sewing/quilting/spinning/dyeing hobby. :o
All our hobbies are paid for out of our own funds, and we share equally all joint costs, so neither of us can complain about the other's spending. btw, I popped into TRU today and snapped up a couple of each of the 5886, 5887, 5888 sets. Now I can either field a sizeable group unaltered, or do a goodly bunch of customising.
-
As my Playmobil collection is used for my Playmobil railway layout it is insured with that.

Its a good question and have thought a number of times to insure my collection , i have an estimated value for all my PM collection and my Dungeons & Dragons action figure collection ( over 200 ) , playbig , tente, lego , airgum boys , matchbox cars etc etc etc so i guess i should be asking how much to insure it all for... ??? ??? ???
I have to say and this is quite upsetting, 15 years ago , in a flood i lost a lot of my toy collection ( most of my playmospace and city sets of 70s & 80s including some very rare 1975-1976 klickies ), some dungeons & dragons .... :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(.. so such events do happen unfortunatelly.... i had about 150 playmospace figures and lots of spaceships etc etc and had made with sea sand a 5mx 4m ' lunar' landscape, all gone ... aw well ....
Got me inspired to buy many more afterwards !!!!
-
Giorginetto, were your Playmospace and D&D items actually washed away in the flood, or just water damaged? Very upsetting either way, and I'm sorry for your loss.
I think I'll pay the $2 a week it costs to insure my collection for $10,000, but I'll need to work out exactly what I have to be sure that's reasonable.

thanks, unfortunatelly they were completely destroyed as they were mixed with water, mud , debri etc etc :'( :'( :'( :'( . Anyways , i have bought about 10x over what i had before the flood so i am not complaining or upset anymore. Idea of insurance is actually a good idea especially for large collections. I sahll medidate on this subject ..... 0) 0) 0) 0) 0) 0)
-
Indianna is right in that a large part of having insurance is for peace of mind. Once in a while it pays off, but mostly it makes you feel better, which is an important thing. I think the $2 per week is worth it in that case.
Fire and flood is a much greater threat to your Playmobil and instrument collection than theft. The vast, vast, vast majority of burglars are unsophisticated young meth heads (especially in Oregon) wanting to get in and get out of a place quick. They’re looking for jewelry, guns, cameras, and small electronics that are sitting out or in the usual places (e.g. dresser drawers).

I remember I had to make an inventory from all Playmo I had

That is what I did, Wolf Knight! It totally surprised me of the amount of money I had actually spent over 12 years of collecting Playmobil :-[! Believe me when I say it has been WELL over $5.000.00 USD for quite awhile :o! Just what I presently spend a month now is mind boggling! As most everyone here knows, I have 32 x 3880 fire engines to name just one of the multiple sets in my collection! I know how most of us keep collecting as new items become available, & continue to search for additional retired rare sets like 3666 castles, 3526 fire engines, 3627 Merry Men's Feast, 3055 Schooner, 3551 Suzanne Trawler, etc.! Those items can add up quickly especially if found MIB! Never cut your collection short! Pictures are a great idea to document what you have obtained, & can really be enlightening ;) :yup:!

150 PLAYMOSPACE FIGURES !!!!    and a diorama!!!!! I would love to see that!!! I am so sorry for your loss!! Thank goodness in my case it was only the boxes...

Did the insurance people accepted this amount? I mean I know one can insure anything he or she wants but do insurace agencies have a positive attitude toward insuring collections???

I'm excessive compulsive, flatcat ! I actually want to reflect an actual fire department with 2 districts using Playmobil as the source of apparatus! If you look @ my original Playmobil City Fire Departments District 1 Stations 1 thru 5, in the photo story telling board here, it will explain my thoughts much better. I also have many other multiple Playmobil fire apparatus assigned to other stations. Also, why do people collect such large knight collections, Roman armies, or Pirate fleets? Could it be for the same reason as mine in the modern theme :hmm:?

You are absolutely right Bill!! I like organising my medieval army into categories, social, cultural, political, etc, and i also love to organise various scenarios for my pirate and western collections....
I went back and reviewed your fire department lineup Bill!!! Very impressive indeed and very well organised fire department. Playmobil City must be the safest in that parallel universe...(yes i am a fun of that theory and i am sure in that universe, the little smiling people have us as toys... ;) )
Cheers,

Not much, a new heart, spine, functioning pancreas :help:! Just the things to survive a little longer ;)!

Because... because... because... Well, just because they look cool! ;D ;)
I asked my parents about insuring my collection, wondering really, if it already was insured.
They said that my collection was insured with the house,
And that I should only need pictures to prove I had the toys.

I've noticed that many Fire Departments in the US and UK are very good at providing web-based information on their set ups, organisation, equipment, and even call logs.
I'm not a big Fire specialist, but I have several engines and other vehicles that would be enough for a couple of stations. In Eugene/Springfield there are 15 separate stations, and I could easily see myself re-creating each one if I had enough personnel and vehicles.
-
i'am out of subject i know but where is Eugene martin?
-
Martin has come to Eugene Oregon in the USA from England, playmo1989, & is considered a transplant ! He is fitting in very well here from all indications ;)!

thank you bill .good to know :)
