Title: Fire station 3175
Post by: flatcat on March 28, 2010, 18:11:14
Hi,

Does anyone know if the new fire station doors (available as an extenstion pack from DS) are compatible with the old firestation 3175? I perhaps wanted to tack some onto the right hand side where the helipad is maybe :-\

Only asking as I don't really like the look of the new fire station, and much prefer the old 3175 as it seems to look more spacious inside, and i will need lots of room for my new fire brigade ;)

(Btw, I don't have either of the sets in question)

I haven't got or had the 3175 but I have bought the 4819 fire station, I just haven't had time to build it up as yet (although Diane does know about it).  I've also got the parts to extend it to accommodate three fire engines but instead of getting the DS add-on I just bought the bits I wanted, missing out some pieces which I felt were unnecessary and actually in my view extended the fire station in a less useful way as each extension is staggered behind the previous one rather than being directly alongside it.  In addition, it was cheaper doing it this way!

As regards the DS add-on for the new fire station fitting the old one (or adding the parts I did), there should be no problem so long as there is a System-X support with holes for connectors on the side to which you're wanting to add the extension.

Although I haven't built the 4819 yet, looking at the two sets on playmoDB, I'd say they're about equal for space in the centre section (and maybe the 4819 is better here), but the 3175 has the little extension on the left.  Against that, the 3175 doesn't have a hose drying/drill tower which the 4819 does.  I intend to add a small extension to my 4819 on the side of the appliance bays which will act as a workshop/store area.

My ideas were sought of to make a large station from both stations, by adding the doors on one side, with numerous helipads above, and a hose drying tower from the new station onto the 3175 somehow - although this will probably take some considerable problemsolving 8}

The issue I have with the new station is that it all seems a bit 'open' what with the pole outside  in between the main building and hos tower, and this all makes it seem more for play value than diorama value with the old one if this makes any sense at all :-\

I see your point.  Your desired set up will also take up some considerable space!

And I'm not sure about the numerous helipads.

The idea, or the practice? :hmm:

Most definitely  :o!

Scrap that idea then - i'll just go and buy a normal 4819 and add some doors to it :)

I would like to know how you are going to add the extra doors with missing out bits and not staggering them. Are you going to post pics, Gordon?

It's quite simple to add doors without staggering them, but, yes, I will post some pics.  The chances of getting the 4819 fire station built up in the near future are slim, but I can show how to do it using the small custom fire station I built (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=3576.0) or by just building up part of the 4819.  Watch this space!

Hi Damo, I plan to take some pics this afternoon and post them later this weekend.

I look forward to seeing them, although I cannot afford a fire station now as I have just blown 60 odd quid on steck in the past day or so but I look forward to seeing it and whether it is worth saving up for although I have also run out of room at the same time ;D

This weekend th epics will be about the extra doors and why they have to be staggered if you use the official Playmobil approach.  I may have a chance to take some photos of the 4819 fire station built up next week.

Here we go, Damo.

The first pic shows the problem piece (the "roof structure") which prevents the extra door unit being attached in line with the original door unit.

The second picture shows that at the right hand end the roof structure is flush with the end of the door unit and so will fit up tight against the wall unit to the right of it.

The third picture shows the left hand end and, as you can see, the roof structure overlaps the end of the door unit.

The fourth picture shows how this overlap prevents joining two door units together.  (The grey cube on the left hand door unit represents the right hand end of the roof structure.)

To get round this, extra sets of doors on the 4819 fire station have to be set back (staggered), as can be seen in the first pic showing the fire station fitted with the 7465 add-on set.  The second set of doors is about 10.5 cms behind the first set.  If you're building a three bay station, the third set of doors is 31.5 cms behind the first set!  For that reason, I prefer just to buy the parts needed to fit an extra set of doors flush with the original set - see second pic.  It is realistic, works well and is cheaper.  It looks a bit bare on top, but I'm sure there is a System-X piece or pieces which could be fitted to form a parapet or suggestion of a roof line.

The last pic is a scan of part of the fire and rescue page from the 2010 catalogue.  As you can see, all the sets of doors are flush with each other and if you look closely you will see that they are not connected to each other because the roof structure doesn't allow this.

Hi Gordon,
You may want to look at part number 30271040 blue roof beam with 2 shallow arches, & research if it is the correct color of blue. It shows up well in the 7835 soccer grand stand pictures. It even has 4 holes to attach a system X sign plate 30271090 or similar, for apparatus bay numbers, or unit number assignments on them.

Thanks Bill, that looks interesting.  I'll investigate further.

This all seems very confusing 8}
but I can see how much space 3 staggered doors will take up, and that your method seems much better :)
