Title: Spartan Custom
Post by: WarriorOfToys on February 27, 2010, 22:19:46
Another custom that I made a while ago...
He is my Spartan, an ancient greek warrior trained from just about the day he was born to become the greatest warrior in history!
These mighty warriors were the some of the men that fought at Troy and at the battle of Thermopolie (the famous '300' battle, even though there were other greeks there besides the spartans... anbout 7,000 if I remember correctly. Only on the 3rd day of the battle were there only 300 spartans, and even that is not true as there were 1,000 other greeks with them as well).
I have made a Playmobil version of an old veteran Spartan...
He is a veteran because you can see his helmet is old and has many bumps from swords and spears, but it is still battle ready!
Now for the pics!

And with just a quick switcharoo I have an Armored Hoplite...

I don't usually cut or paint things... but I was making a movie staring greeks soo... ;D
I hope you enjoy!

It is customs like this that make me wish Playmo would get on and make an Ancient Greece theme.

nice custom, but how did you make the helmet?

I took a playmobil sugarloaf helm...

Cut up the front with a dremmel tool untill I reached the eye holes...
then cut the nose gaurd down untill it was the lenght I wanted it.

It is customs like this that make me wish Playmo would get on and make an Ancient Greece theme.

You and me both... you and me both...  :'(
But I can make pretty good Masadonians with just playmo parts (no cutting or glueing!).
All I need is for DS to have the parts I need... :P

Very nice Spartan and Hoplite, WarriorOfToys!  I agree with Martin that your customs make me long for a Greek theme.

Thank you Justindo!

I forgot to mention a step in my post before on how I made the helm...
To get the feathers I cut a line down the top of the helm with my dremmel
(I love that thing!) and the feathers fit snugly inside!

What is a dremel tool? I do all my cutting with an exacto knife, which takes a long time, and I always need new blades

Well SeaWarrior, you could use an exato knife...
Or you could use a dremmel tool which can be used for multiple things!
Here is a picture of mine...

And it has lots of tools to do all the different things... This is the cutting wheel I used for the helm,
it is the perfect width and playmo parts will snap in like thay were made to fit there!

Hope this helps! It is much faster then an exacto knife.

Hello

Great looking custom helmet and the way you described your cutting it is rather a simple creation. I find some of the simplest customs from existing Playmobil parts to be very creative.

Thanks for sharing

And, yes, we want the Greeks!

Definitely !!! Greek warriors with different helmets , insignia and colours , greek temples , the 12 gods , hercules etc etc etc. Tjat would be quite someting and probably the egyptian, roman moulds  would provide a good foundation for the rest that would be needed for such a range !!!!

Nice custom.
I like the spartans.
Troy is my favorite movie.
And 300.

Thank you Peetje!
Troy and 300? :hmm:
No the greatest movies, historically acurate wise.
Action and stuff is good, but when I watch a movie it has to be accurate.
(Just a little quirk of mine... 8})

Unfortunately, almost no movies are historically accurate, just the nature of Hollywood.  300 is still a tight movie though.  I would LOVE to see a Greek theme, but would PM put out such a similar theme to the Romans at a time they seem to be phasing them out? I hope. :prays:

Gladiator was an ok movie.

You are probably right about the Greeks El Jefe...
Playmobil will probably not put more guys like the Romans in if the Romans didn't do well. :'(

... if the Romans didn't do well. :'(

But, did the Romans do well or not? Does anyone know how well the Romans sold?

It seems that TRU online sold completely out of their Egyptian stock!

And, with all the Roman "spin-offs", it appears that there were at least twenty-eight different Roman sets ...  :o

I thought the Romans would have sold well too, but someone (I forget who) posted somewhere (I forget where) that the Romans did not sell well and he apparently had some inside information from Playmobil.

Sorry to read that, Justindo ... (http://www.gardenwargamer.com/images/crybaby.gif)

I would have also thought that the Romans would have sold really well ...  :eh?:

Good thing I now have all my Roman commanders that I need,
I can just stock up on legionnaires! 8}

Don't wait too long, WoT!

The only two Roman sets that are left in Playmobil's German website are 7878 and 7879!

Don't worry Richard! ;D
The only sets I need now are the "new" specials comming out...
Number 4659 to be exsact.
And since there are still the legionnaires on the German website I can stock up on those at my leisure. :)
I was going to build up a cool Roman city with the colloseum and some houses...
but I am afraid that is no longer possible, :(
unless I get a part time job sometime very very soon... like this week.

This is true.  I love "300" as inaccurate as it is!

How about a movie about the March of the 10,000?  The 1979 cult movie "The Warriors", based on ancient Greek general and historian Xenophon's "Anabasis," is a fun film, but a movie depicting the actual story would be great.

"Oh, Warriors...come out and playaaaayyyy!"

I'm here! ;D
I agree, 300 was a great movie.
I would love to see other movies like it, even if they are not historical.
I would just explain to everyone how the armor is not correct and stuff...
Which might explain why my family will not see any of those sorts of movies with me! ;D
