Title: A snap shot of the elusive Nessie!
Post by: Sylvia on October 24, 2009, 11:27:56
I am going to make a fortune selling this photo to all the newpapers! :yippee:

Thank you, Karim - the fog effect from the "PhotoFiltre" program you linked to gave me the perfect finishing touch. :)9

Thanks for all the nice comments! :-*  I had a lot of fun making this pic. ;D

Wow that water and fog effect is just great . How did you do it , it looks really good ?

The pic is made up of several different images layered together. The water is an actual photo of a lake surface which I found whilst googling (It's Lake Garda, not Loch Ness, but don't tell anyone  :shhhh:). I liked the shape of the ripples and the colour and thought it might work well. The sky is just a gradient which I placed behind it. It always looks more realistic to use a blue which is darker at the top and fades down to white or very light blue at the horizon. I blurred the water's edge where it meets the sky to add a little more depth to the pic and hide the join.

Nessie and the figure riding on her back were photographed separately and then spliced together after the background behind them was cut away. I also cut away sections and then paste them back into the photo where stuff has to overlap, like one of the "plates" on Nessie's back which sits in front of his leg and her fin which goes over the waves.

The mist/fog was the easiest bit of all. It's just a special effect filter applied over the top of the image. You can download the program which Karim recommended here: http://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Multimedia/photo_numerique/fiches/telecharger-21756.html

The instructions and commands are all in French - which makes it slightly more of a challenge - but it's a really good program for a freebie.

First select: Fichier -> Ouvrir to browse and open the image you want to edit
Then to apply the fog, select: Filtre -> Effet d'optique -> Brume -> Blanche (for white fog)

The black fog (Noir) would be really good for adding a smoky atmosphere to a photo, say for a burning building or forest. :)

Sylvia,

Isn't the man astride Nessie Hans?  He looks like Hans.  I'm glad he found her at last.   :)

Yes, it is Hans. Well spotted, KM! :)9

I've been working on some new graphics for Just For Klicks recently, and this is one I have used to illustrate the Nessie-hunting story. :)

I just "stopped by" Just 4 Kl!cks! (http://www.justforklicks.com/) and stayed for more than a half an hour (and, I still didn't see everything).

Wonderful upgrade, Sylvia ...  :wow:

I was surprised that in the "about us" section, that when you mentioned the closed Guestbook, that you didn't tell your visitors about PlaymoFriends ... ;)

And, BTW ... your Nessie's splendidly brilliant ...

All the best,
Richard

Hi Sylvia,
Like Richard I had a look at Just for Klicks having not visited before, and like him I was there some time.
I loved your 'Nessie' story, the scenery was wonderful and the dialogue amusing!  I was particularly impressed by your piper (its such a shame that Playmobil don't make a figure in a kilt) and his bagpipes. :wow: I must show my son tomorrow as he tried to make some pipes, but nothing as impressive as yours - what did you use for the bag part?
I especially loved the shot of Nessie in the water with the hills in the background.  I have a photo of my eldest boy sitting on the Nessie model, it made me realise it's 13 years since I last visited   :o - I must go back soon.
Thanks for showing us the Nessie photos and thanks Richard for the link to Just for Klicks.

Ah. Good point. I have the link on the home page, but I should add something there too...  :yup:

Hi Elaine,

Thank you for the compliments on the Nessie story. I'm glad you enjoyed the scenery and that it brought back happy memories of a visit to the highlands! :D The photos for the story were shot several years ago (Summer 2003, I think) but it took me about a year to get around to making the pages.

While I was upgrading the site, I decided to make opening pages for each story. The scotsman figure, "Mac," was not my creation. He was made by David Hamer, my partner at Just For Klicks. (I have now added the credit to the title page - something I should have thought to do before. :-[ ) The bag for the pipes was modelled from milliput. I believe the other parts, such as the drones and chanter, were made from wooden cocktail sticks which probably would have been inserted into the milliput before it hardened to achieve a good fit.

Interesting tale about Mac... from humble beginnings as a milkman (so I'm told), he has climbed the celebrity ladder and become something of a klicky superstar. At the moment he is living it up in France, where he was sent for another photoshoot. He appears on one of the pages of Richard Unglik's Playmobil book, La Grande Aventure des Animaux (http://jeunesse.casterman.com/albums_detail.cfm?Id=33657). (see attachment).

When you visited Loch Ness, you might have seen a piper named Murdo Urquhart who played regularly for the tourists near the castle during the summer months. Sadly, he passed away (http://www.highland-news.co.uk/news/fullstory.php/aid/5392/Loch_Ness__concrete__piper_dies.html) earlier this year. :(

Over the years, it seems that most of the members here at PlaymoFriends have enjoyed solving puzzles and finding things.

There are TWO separate spelling errors on J4K's keychain (http://www.justforklicks.com/j4k/keychains.html) "mouse overs" ...  ;D
(Don't forget to look at all four: Men, Women, Kids + Animals and Promotional.)

Will our members here be able to find them BEFORE Sylvia corrects them ...  ???

Happy hunting ...  :lens:

Hopefully not. ;)

They've been wrong ever since I uploaded the pics the first time around because I just copied all the info from the old "alt" tags. :-[ Before, you would only have seen the tooltip descriptions using Explorer, but I'm now using "title" instead so it'll work on other browsers too.

Have you reloaded the pages? ???

I already found sheriff and skier. You'll have to point me to the other ones.

OMG ... There were THREE !!! I missed "skier" ...  :-[

Hurry, hurry, PlaymoFriends ... There is still ONE that Sylvia hasn't found!

Who will find it first?

Oooops ... my error ...  :-[

My apologies, Sylvia. I did not realize that "Medina" (http://www.aboutmalta.net/6047mdinatour.asp) (the old capitol of Malta) was also spelled/spelt "Mdina" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mdina) ... :*)

I guess that I'm still not too old to learn something new (or to put my foot in my mouth) ...  ;)

All the best,
Richard

No worries. Glad to know there wasn't a third error, after all!

FWIW, I didn't know there was another way to spell Mdina. Your knowledge of historical place names far outstrips mine. ;)

Actually, Sylvia, in this case your knowledge was far better than mine. Mdina is the preferred Maltese spelling. And, probably for a very good reason. The Arabs ruled Malta from 870AD for about two hundred years. The word "Medina" is an Arabic word for a small walled fortified area.
