Pirate Ship Cake

Bon Appetit !!!

(http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/8384/ff0801cakepirateship.jpg) (http://img15.imageshack.us/i/ff0801cakepirateship.jpg/)

Everyone will be screaming "Shiver me timbers!" when they see this swashbuckling cake.

Party Idea: Your swashbucklers will have loads of fun at a Pirate Party!

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
 2 baked 9" or 10" round cakes
3 to 4 cups chocolate icing
 Decorations:
Chocolate wafer sticks (such as Pepperidge Farm Pirouette Cookies)
Milk chocolate wafer rolls (Waffeletten cookies)
Several pieces of white or off-white paper
 3 10" wooden skewers
 Malted milk balls
 Rolo candies
 Root beer barrels
Plastic pirate figures (we used Playmobil), washed thoroughly

 1. Cut the cakes in half and layer them, rounded sides all facing the same direction, adding a thin coat of chocolate icing between the layers.

 2. Trim the bottom curves of the cakes slightly to help them sit flat, then turn the cakes upright, as shown. (Tip: If necessary, wrap the cakes in plastic and chill in the freezer to make them firmer. Also, two drinking straws stuck through the four layers of cake will help keep them together.)

3. Cover with the chocolate icing, then create planking lines along the hull with a butter knife. Chill at least one hour to firm the icing.

4. Use dabs of icing to anchor wafer stick gunwales along the edge of the deck.

5. Press the wafer rolls into both sides of the ship for cannons.

6. Cut sails from the paper, then slip them onto the skewers and set the masts in place.

7. Add malted milk ball cannonballs, plenty of Rolo gold booty, and root beer barrels, then station a few pirates to keep watch.

8. For safety, place the candles in the cookie cannons, far from the paper sails. Also, make sure that the surface on which the cake rests is impervious to wax, as the burning candles will drip.

With the compliments of PlaymoChef (http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/5821/playmochef.jpg) (http://img197.imageshack.us/i/playmochef.jpg/)

Did anyone said Cake Toppers   ?

The Perfect Cake Topper by a Lady that surely deserve to be a Playmofriend...

(http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3294/32728195177x15000.jpg) (http://img9.imageshack.us/i/32728195177x15000.jpg/)

The words “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” were the words that my youngest sister always said when she attended weddings. She was thoroughly convinced that she would never meet her Prince Charming, let alone walk down the aisle. A few months ago she sprung a huge surprise on the whole family, the man she’d been dating for a while proposed and she graciously accepted. If you thought I was the weird one in the family, think again. Don’t get me wrong, I love my family but we function much better when there are a few thousand miles between us. My sister set out on creating the perfect wedding, which in her eyes means everything has to be Victorian. A huge white cake with pink flowers, a handmade dress with lace everywhere and a huge horse drawn carriage to take them to and from the ceremony. She sent me an email saying that she couldn’t find anything that she really liked for the top of the cake, that’s when my left eyebrow shot up in the air and an evil grin washed over my face. I wonder if they’d both go for Playmobil figures on the top of the cake … I ran the idea past both of them and they weren’t too keen on it so I decided to order her a set and have it sent to her so she could see them in person to make the judgment call. In this case a picture wasn’t worth a thousand words because she went insane when she saw the figures and told me to stop looking for an alternative cake topper.

Playmobil Victorian Bride And Groom

I originally picked up this set from an eBay seller who was getting rid of a ton of Playmobil figures but the deal fell through so I ordered them at the Playmobil Online Store. I wasn’t sure what to make of them looking at the photo; I mean they looked nice in the picture but were the colors going to be the same? Were the flowers going to fall apart? It was a whole different story after I got the set; just like the Prince and Princess set, these are extremely detailed figures that you simply have to see to believe. I wouldn’t have suggested them for my finicky and picky little sister had this been a common Playmobil set because I knew she’d turn her nose up at them and verbally bash me for suggesting them.

Both the male and female figure are dressed in a Victorian fashion and it’s a hard call on which one looks better. About the only thing that’s missing from this set is a cane for the groom but that might be overdoing it a little for most peoples taste. You can get a good idea of what both figures look like from the photo but seeing it up close and personal is a whole different story. Her dress is white with beautiful pink stenciling on the top and bottom. Her veil is white and runs down past her neck and the shoes, oh my the shoes. For once the designers actually made a little bit of a change and gave her something that looks like it matches the clothing instead of the usual colored shoes. She has a small train coming off the back of the dress and that just adds to the overall appeal of the figure. The only accessory piece to this set is the small bouquet of flowers that can be snapped into either of her hands but, personally, they really take away from the pink on her dress.

The groom is in a nice blue tuxedo [no tails] with white and solver stenciled accents. The thing that really got me was the top hat; it has a white band around it and while this might serve to add a tie in to the brides dress it doesn’t work with all the silver on his suit. The wrist wraps [detachable] help to break up the navy blue color of his tuxedo and the red shirt he’s wearing gives him a little zip. Not to be outdone by the bride, he’s got bright white shoe covers, a stenciled tie, lapel flower and stenciled belt. One thing to add about both figures is that they have flesh colored hands, not the usual white or yellow that you find on other figures. I wish the groom would have had a little red added to his cheeks but alas; it’s just the bride that gets this type of royal treatment. Like I said, it’s hard to say which one looks better …

If this sounds like a set that you are interested in the best place to get this is the Playmobil Online Store because they have the cheapest price. Most online toy stores that carry this claim that it is ultra rare or that it is hard to find but that's not the case. You can get this for $4.99 from the Playmobil store [plus shipping] and that is a great deal for two awesome looking figures!

The Bottom Line

I am really happy that my sister and her betrothed liked the bride and groom set and I am sure that more than a few people will look at them on top of the cake and shake their heads wondering where they came up with that idea. This set is pretty hard to find in retail stores so if it is something that you are interested in, check out the Playmobil Online Store. Both the figures are exceptionally detailed, look great together and their outfits are definitely Victorian. These make for a great small add-on wedding gift and little girls love to play with them. Little Annabelle tried to make off with these two figures more than a few times so I’m thinking about getting her a set of her own so she can use them with the Playmobil horses and girl sets that she has.

Pirate Treasure Chest Cake

(http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/5626/treasurehunt.jpg) (http://img197.imageshack.us/i/treasurehunt.jpg/)

Your swashbucklers can leave the Pirate Party with quite a haul, such as gummy fish, temporary tattoos, chocolate coins or candy jewelry. They can dig these treasures out of the Treasure Chest Cake at the end of the hunt (just be sure everyone gets an even number of prizes).

INGREDIENTS:
 1 baked 13- x 9- x 2-inch cake
 6 cups chocolate frosting
Edible treasures, such as chocolate coins, Rolo candies, chocolate almond kisses or Necco Wafers
 Red Fruit by the Foot
 Mini jawbreakers
Candy jewels, such as candy necklaces and rock candy
1. Cut a section approximately 2-inches wide in the center of the cake. The two remaining 5 1/2- x 9- x 2-inch rectangular pieces will form the bottom and top of the chest.

2. Slice the 2-inch section on an angle to form two long triangular wedges. Place the wedges on the bottom half of the chest, about an inch apart. Both wedges should face the same direction (tall end toward the front of the cake) as they will support the top of the treasure chest and keep it propped open. Then frost the bottom half of cake, including the wedges.

3. To add further support for the top of the chest, stand a few large gold coins under the lid.

4. With the "hinged" end (left side of photo) at the back, place the top of the chest on the bottom and frost.

5. Wrap the fruit leather straps around the chest and press mini jawbreaker "nails" into the frosting alongside the straps. Fill the chest and the surrounding area with edible treasures and jewels.

Pirate Hat Cake

(http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/2492/0308piratehatphoto180ff.jpg) (http://img252.imageshack.us/i/0308piratehatphoto180ff.jpg/)

Ask any birthday buccaneer if he wants a piece of this swashbuckling cake, and you'll get a resounding, "Aye, matey!" Surround it with chocolate coins for an even more treasured treat.

 RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
 2 (8-inch) round chocolate cakes
2 (16-ounce) cans chocolate fudge frosting
 White decorators' frosting
1. Use a long serrated knife to trim the tops of the cakes to flatten them, if needed. Spread a thin layer of chocolate frosting over the trimmed side of one cake, then lay the other cake on top, trimmed side down.

2. Cut one side from the stack, as shown. Cut this piece in half and assemble the hat. Spoon 1/4 cup of the chocolate frosting into a resealable sandwich bag, set it aside, and use the rest of the frosting to cover the cake.

3. With white decorators' frosting, add a skull and crossbones, and hat trim. Snip a corner from the bag of chocolate frosting and pipe on the skull features. Serves 12.

School Bus Cake

(http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/4695/cakeschoolbussm.jpg) (http://img252.imageshack.us/i/cakeschoolbussm.jpg/)

You'll have no trouble getting your kids on board when it comes to decorating and devouring this back-to-school dessert.

 RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
2 loaf cakes (pound cake or banana bread works well)
 2 cups white frosting
 Yellow food coloring
 White chocolate chips
 4 mini chocolate-covered doughnuts
 Round cookie wafers
 Black decorating gel
 Small red gumdrops
 Red Hots
1. Trim the top and sides of one cake to straighten them, if needed. Spread a bit of frosting onto the center of a serving plate and set the trimmed cake upside down on top of it (to keep the cake from sliding).

2. Trim the sides and top of the second cake to straighten them. Then slice off a 1 1/2-inch-thick piece from one end and use the remaining portion for the top of the bus, frosting the bottom and setting it atop the first cake.

3. Spread a thin layer of white frosting over the whole cake to seal in any crumbs and let it set for about 15 minutes. Spread more white frosting on the sides of the top layer (the windows of the bus). Reserve about a teaspoon of white frosting, then tint the rest yellow and use it to frost the rest of the cake.

4. For tires, use dabs of frosting to attach white chocolate chip hubcaps (tips down) to the centers of the mini doughnuts and then to stick the tires onto the bus.

5. Transform cookie wafers into people using white frosting and black gel to create eyes. Trim some red gumdrops for smiles, then press the cookie faces onto the cake.

6. Finally, add details such as black gel lettering, Red Hots for caution lights, and white chocolate chip headlights.

An edible Excavator ?

(http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/605/0308edibleexcavatorphot.jpg) (http://img29.imageshack.us/i/0308edibleexcavatorphot.jpg/)

Assembled from a pound cake and Twinkies, this no-bake treat will please the crew at a celebration with a truck or vehicle theme, or at our construction party.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
 9 1/2-by 4-inch pound cake
 1 1/2 cups yellow frosting
1/2 cup light-brown frosting (white and chocolate mixed together)
 Chocolate decorators' frosting
 4 mini chocolate-covered doughnuts
 Blue and green M&M's candies
 Red and yellow gumdrops
 4 Twix
 2 Twinkies
4 (8-inch) wooden skewers, trimmed into two 4K-inch and
 two 6-inch pieces
4 yellow Twizzlers Rainbow Twists, cut to the same size as the skewers
12 chocolate cookies (we used Oreo cookies)
 1. Cut a 2 1/2-inch-long section from one end of the cake. Frost the section's cut end and place it on top of the cake for the cab, as shown. Cover the entire cake with yellow frosting, saving about 1/3 cup for the loader and bucket.

2. Spoon the light-brown frosting into a resealable sandwich bag, snip off a corner, and pipe a window onto each side of the cab. Outline the windows with chocolate decorators' frosting, then press the doughnut tires in place. Add M&M's and gumdrops for lights and hubcaps.

3. Use Twix to add a smokestack and loader arms. Frost one of the Twinkies yellow, set it on the loader arms, and add chocolate decorators' frosting details. Cut a 2-inch section from the other Twinkie, place it behind the truck for the bucket, and frost it yellow. Add pieces of yellow gumdrop for teeth.

4. Slide the skewers inside the Twizzlers. Press them into the cake and bucket as shown, using dabs of chocolate decorators' frosting to join them. With a rolling pin or food processor, crush the chocolate cookies into "dirt" and sprinkle it around the cake. Serves 8.

Chocolate Train

(http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/685/choochoo.jpg) (http://img194.imageshack.us/i/choochoo.jpg/)

Shelley Collette of Palisade, Colorado, engineered this great train cake, which makes an ideal centerpiece for a toddler's choo-choo party. If you invited the entire nursery school, bake extra cars.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
 5 baked mini loaf cakes
4 cups frosting (any four colors)
 16 M&M's
 16 chocolate sandwich cookies
 Candies and cookies for cargo
 Rope licorice
1 marshmallow, frosted and rolled in jimmies (for the smokestack)
6 popcorn pieces or mini marshmallows threaded on a wire (for the steam)
 Vanilla wafer for engineer
 1. Cut one loaf cake as shown in the small picture. Use frosting to attach the pieces you cut off to the four remaining loaves, creating different shaped cars. Frost the engine and each car a different color.

 2. With a small dab of frosting, place an M&M in the center of each cookie to make the train wheels, then press the wheels against the frosted sides of the train.

3. Add beds of candy cargo, outlined with licorice; a marshmallow smokestack with popcorn steam; and a decorated vanilla-wafer engineer.

The Little Princess and the Pea Bed

(http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/9669/pincesspeamainphoto180f.jpg) (http://img216.imageshack.us/i/pincesspeamainphoto180f.jpg/)

Fairy tales can come true with this sweet rendition of the extra-sensitive princess and her super-tall bed. Despite the cake's magical appearance, you won't lose sleep worrying about making it! The mattresses are two cakes that have been cut into quarters and stacked. The quilt and dust ruffle are made from store-bought fondant. For the headboard and footboard, just use melted candy and our printable template to "draw" the designs on wax paper. Idea from Karen W. of Iowa City, Iowa. See her version here:

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
 Headboard/footboard template
 Wax paper
8 Pepperidge Farm Chocolate Fudge Pirouette Wafers
1 cup dark cocoa melting candies (we used Wilton Candy Melts)
 9 ziplock bags
2 cakes baked in 10- by 15-inch jelly roll pans
 5 1/4 cups vanilla frosting
 4 drinking straws
 Plastic gloves
Red, blue, yellow, and green food coloring
8 ounces (about 1 cup) fondant
 Cornstarch (for dusting)
 5 marshmallows
 1 vanilla wafer cookie
 1 tube chocolate decorators' icing
 4 brown M&M's and 1 green M&M
1. Make the headboard and footboard: Lay the template on a cookie sheet and tape a piece of wax paper on top. Line up two Pirouette wafers along each bedpost and use a serrated knife to trim them to size. Set them aside.

2. Melt half of the cocoa candies as directed on the package, then spoon the candy into a ziplock bag and snip a 1/8-inch hole from one corner. Pipe the candy onto the wax paper, following the lines on the template. While the candy is still soft, press the Pirouette wafers in place. Place the pan in the refrigerator until the candy is set, about 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat to make the footboard.

 3. Build the bed: If needed, trim the tops of the cakes with a long serrated knife to make them level.

4. Spread 1 1/2 to 2 cups of vanilla frosting on the cakes' tops, reserving about a teaspoon of frosting for the princess's face. Cut the cakes into quarters so that you end up with eight 5- by 7 1/2-inch pieces.

5. Stack the pieces on a serving platter. Insert 4 straws down through the center of the cake to make it more stable.

6. Make the linens: 6 Working on a sheet of wax paper and wearing plastic gloves, knead 1 drop of red food coloring into the fondant to make it pink. Divide the fondant in half, then knead 1 drop of blue into one of the halves to make it purple. Work the pieces until the color is even throughout.

7. On a second sheet of wax paper lightly dusted with cornstarch, use a cornstarch-dusted rolling pin to roll the pink fondant into a 5- by 7-inch rectangle. Use a pizza cutter or knife to trim the edges and lightly score the top with crossing lines to look like quilting. Roll the purple fondant into a 7- by 1-inch strip and two 18- by 1-inch strips.

8. Secure the 7-inch strip along one long edge of the pink blanket with a few drops of water. For the dust ruffle, crimp the top edges of the long strips and lightly press them around the cake's bottom layer.

9. Decorate the bed: Tint the remaining frosting (see guide below). Spoon the pale yellow, blue, pink, purple, and green frostings intoseparate ziplock bags. Snip a 1/8-inch hole from a corner of each. Starting above the dust ruffle and working up, pipe frosting on the sides of the cake, alternating colors so you end up with 6 "mattresses," each about 1 inch tall.

10. For the princess's body, lay 3 marshmallows end to end lengthwise down the center of the cake, using a few dots of frosting to secure them. Place 2 slightly flattened marshmallows perpendicular to the body for a pillow.

11. Lay the fondant blanket over the marshmallow body. Spoon the dark yellow, leftover vanilla, and red frostings into ziplock bags. Snip a V-inch hole from the bags of dark yellow and vanilla, and an even smaller hole from the bag of red frosting. Use a dot of dark yellow frosting to secure the vanilla wafer to the pillow. Pipe on dark yellow hair, vanilla eyes and nose, and a red mouth. Use chocolate decorators' icing for the pupils.

12. Gently peel the wax paper from the headboard and footboard. Press the pieces onto the short ends of the cake, adding more frosting to secure if necessary. Use chocolate frosting to attach a chocolate M&M to the top of each bedpost. Press a green M&M pea into the side of the cake. Serves 24.
How to Tint the Frosting:
pale yellow: 1 cup frosting + 10 drops yellow
blue: 1/2 cup frosting + 5 drops blue
pink: 1/2 cup frosting + 8 drops red
purple: 1/2 cup frosting + 4 drops red + 2 drops blue
green: 1/2 cup frosting + 8 drops green
dark yellow: 3 tablespoons frosting + 2 or 3 drops yellow
red: 1 tablespoon frosting + 2 drops red

The cake was made for a baptism, yes you read right i dont know why people want a pirate for a baptism, the people need it and i make it.  8}

This people dont say make a playmobil pirate , i have free hand to make what i want, a pirate inside a boat,
i make a pirate with a little playmobil style !

The cake has a diameter from 28 cm <-> 11 inch.

Great cake, Andi! :wow: I bet that confectionery masterpiece was a real hit with the parents and the guests. 8-)

So much detail must be very difficult to achieve with edible materials. Is the pirate made from marzipan?

Thanks for finding the photos. :-*

As far as I know, Andi (customizer) did this cake for the 30th aniversary of playmobil.
(...and gave them to playmobil officials at the toy fare in nuremberg?  ???)

Excellent!!! I used playmobil on my wedding xake as i have posted in an older thread . The combo of playmobil and cakes is fantastic, only one needs to remember samll playmo pieces and a cake can be hazardous to bambinis and extra care is needed ...
