Title: Playmo Swabby
Post by: Jimbo on July 03, 2008, 00:50:46
Ahoy Playmofriends, seafarers and landlubbers alike.

I have been "putting" around the last few days trying to
make a modern U.S. Sailor.

This is how the little salt turned out.

The base figure was the snowboarder.  I raised the inseam a bit and removed the
cargo pockets.  The collar/flap was made from the snowboarder's hood.  I
used a belt sander to remove anything that didn't look like a sailor collar, then fine tuned
it with jewelers files and sandpaper.  The necktie (with a regulation knot :yup:)
was made from thin ribbon, superglued for firmness, and painted black.

The sailor hat, (dixie cup) was made from card stock, and painted with Krylon
spray paint.  The uniform was also sprayed with the same stuff.

He is standing on a genuine piece of the deck from the Battleship USS North Carolina.
(Son in law and Daughter sent it to me when they moved to North Carolina.)

Oh yeah, the swab,(mop) was made from yarn and a Playmobil flag staff from an
old knight set.

Anchors Aweigh!

Well done, Jimbo ...  :wow: ...  :wow: ...  :wow:

Sure brings back lots of memories (especially shore leave and midnight liberty) ...  :klickywink:

Are you getting a flight crew ready for a Playmobil sea plane?

The dixie cup looks great. I can see the whites very easily becoming dungarees and a chambray shirt.

Let's see Pacific or Caribbean?

I vote Caribbean ...

Here's a photo of a couple of swab jockeys down here in St. Thomas in the 1950s. That's Fort Christian in the background (on the right). Back in the 1950s, it was used as a police station by the VIPD and the Navy SPs.

Thanks for sharing, Jim. I really love your customs!

All the best,
Richard

Hello, Timmy ...

To Richard: you were in the navy?

Jimbo was in the US Navy. He was an aircrewman and flew in a naval patrol craft in the 1960s.

I was in the US Coast Guard and flew SAR in a flyingboat out of San Juan, Puerto Rico in the 1950s.

The bell-bottom trousers look fabulous!
Very clever adaptation of the snowboarder figure! 8-)

Very nice custom Jimbo!

I've been reading a lot of Naval stuff recently, and am in the middle of reading The Cruel Sea.

This figure looks just the part. Very clever use and adjustment of the baggy trousers. I'd like to see these on more figures, not just skateborders and clowns that I've seen so far.

Jimbo, your swabby is so appropriate for the Fourth of July ... I posted a LINK (http://gardenwargaming.playclicks.com/forum/index.php?topic=1158.0) at GW-PC.

Thanks again for a really great custom!

your sailor belongs with no doubt to the last category.

well jimbo, if you want and try other uniforms from navies around the world, i leave you with a picture of some portuguese sailors from the n.r.p. "sagres".
with only a litlle more black paint it should be easy (just kidding)

Richard..Loved those libertys, I think I had a good time .
I have been thinking about a seaplane flight crew since Porco Rosso.  I have a few ideas.

You are right about the dungarees and chambray shirt being easy...also, dungarees and T shirt would be cool.  My favorite is dress blues, but the pinstriping would be tricky 8}
The white hat was a bit tricky to make as well.

Pacific or Caribbean?....Pacific naturally :yup:.

Thanks again all.
Happy sailing,
Jimbo

Hi Tim..I flew in a P2V5FS (SP2E) land based patrol bomber. We flew out of Hawaii, Japan,
Okinawa, Guam, Taiwan, and the Philippines, (mostly).

This is a photo of a P2v-5 Neptune like the ones that I remember following into the Gitmo Naval Base (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4f92Fado1Y) back in the late 1950s.

Now there's an idea!  The Royal Navy Museum in Portsmouth used to sell bits of HMS Victory.   If they still do, I have a fancy for a British sailor doing the same thing.

Jimbo's figure would make a grand presentation piece to some old salt who'd served on the North Carolina.

Hi Richard..
That is a great picture of the P2V.  Thanks for posting it.  I was
trying to figure out how I could get a good pic. of mine to post.
You saved the day!

Hmmm, Playmobil scale P2V... 8}

Hi Dan,
It is, or at least was customary for the original commissioning crew members to get a "plank" from their ship when it was decommissioned.  I would have loved to have gotten a piece of my old bird, but last time I checked, it was already pots and pans and aluminum  stuff :yup:

I also think an old salt from the North Carolina would like the little Playmo Swabby.

Best regards
Jimbo

You're very welcome. Did you get to see the GITMO movie? If not, go back and click on it. I think that you might like it.

The white hat was a bit tricky to make as well.

Have you tried filing the the little bump on the Pirate sailor hat (sometimes used as a Chinese hat). I've thought about doing it and painting the hat white, I wonder what it would look like? Do you think that it might pass as a Navy Dixie cup?

If it would work, I could make a mould and crank 'em out by the hundreds ...

Maybe somebody else has already tried it?

All the best,
Richard

Hi Richard,
Yes!  I saw the GITMO movie..It sure took me down memory lane, (or should I say flight path?) :)

I wondered about the Chinese sailor hat being a white hat...I rounded one up last night,
and checked it out.  It might work, but IMHO, it wouldn't be "just right".  I wonder if I could make a sample that could be used to mould some ???.

Best regards,
Jumbo

I just checked the Playmobil that I have here and, unfortunately, I don't have one of those hats with me.

However, I checked Heather's data base and found the attached image.

That sure looks a lot like a dixie cup to me, Jimbo ...

I also remember all the different shapes that they were bent into by all the different swabbies ...  :klickywink:

Can you take some close-up photos of the one that you rounded up?

Hi Richard,
Looks fairly close to a Dixie cup, but the back of the hat is a bit low...(just had a flash back..
low is normal).  If I can find another one, I may see what can be done to make it look
like what I have in mind.

I think Knightmo can help with the close up pictures..

You are certainly right about the shapes that poor hat was bent in!

I wouldn't mind visiting, but I don't think I want to stay.  Besides I'm having too much fun being

The "seashore" is wonderful, Jim ...

I'm surprised that an old salt like you dropped anchor in a dry port.

I know that it would be very difficult for me to be away from the ocean.

Back on topic: Has Jimmy had time to take some photos of the Chinese hat that I keep thinking that we could file off the top bump, paint and use as a sailor's white hat?

Hi Richard, saw Jimmy today.(Sunday). We took some pictures... he sent them to his

that stuff.  Actually one of the pictures looks very much like the white hat...the top

I still need to dig into my Playmobil hat box, and see if I have a spare.

The adventure continues...

Hi Richard,
Wow! it does look like a limey's flat hat. :yup:...I fabricated the hat on top
of a klicky hair piece, then sanded away any "extra" putty.  The Mighty Putty

Yup! :yup:, I used Krylon.

I have not been able to find Krylon's Fusion paint here in the US Virgin Islands, so I'll have wait until I'm back on the mainland.

Looking forward to trying the Mighty Putty method.

Thanks for all the good information, Jimbo!

All the best,
Richard

Ahoy again y'all,
I decided to make a "fat" swabby.  So here he is.
I cut the tummy off of a fat pirate's legs and super-glued them
to a pair of clown legs, and filled the gaps.  (Not to much filler was required.)
I raised the inseam to match the tummy.

A few coats of Krylon Fusion was applied to the dungarees and T shirt,
and he is ready to ship out. :yup:

The white hat was made from Mighty Putty, with just another different roll to
the brim.

Best regards,
Jimbo

Great custom again

you very talented

as for the ships they should / could serve on

The Carnatic
The Rangoon
The Henrietta
The torn down Henrietta  ;D
The Tankadere
The General Grant
The Mongolia

and a few Custom supporting actor schips are waiting to sail out for Wolfsburg 2009

They all  desparately seek for a crew  ;)

I wish I could show some pics but that would spoil the supprise in Wolfsburg . Not ?  :)

all the best and keep up the good work

Congratz again

Very nice job Jimbo! That Krylon paint sure does a nice job, question about the Mighty Putty - Is this a 2 part epoxy, tube, or like Rock Hard Putty that you mix up? I am not familiar with the name, thanks.

Yet another great sailor . I would have to agree that you need to make some sort of ship ( maybe out of the Conlines ship ) to put all these little & now fat guys to work swabbing the deck .

That mighty link was quite an annoying link . The putty looks like it works great but that infomercial guy has got to go .

It's almost un-American to NOT like Billy Mays (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Mays) ...
