Title: any news about may's secret sets?
Post by: cachalote on April 05, 2008, 02:51:22
 :hmm: some of you surely remember the promised secret sets (2 of them) announced some time ago, due may 2008.
a translation of what is said by playmobil could result in something like:

"still secret!
two mega-strong action articles
guaranteed play and action in summer months with super-incredible prices and in a limited edition!"

 ??? is it still a secret? does any of you have a clue?
 :yup: we are not that far away from may, something should have leaked out...
 :-\ any hints on the contents?
 ;) i think i can see a tricorne-pirate on the left but nothing else...

I'm afraid it still is a secret. Only about a few weeks to go before all will be revealed.

Well, I am afraid, the summer specials are the following sets...
 ::)
http://www.playmobil.de/on/demandware.store/Sites-DE-Site/de_DE/Product-Show?pid=4445&cgid=Freizeit-Abenteuer (http://www.playmobil.de/on/demandware.store/Sites-DE-Site/de_DE/Product-Show?pid=4445&cgid=Freizeit-Abenteuer)
http://www.playmobil.de/on/demandware.store/Sites-DE-Site/de_DE/Product-Show?pid=4446&cgid=Freizeit-Abenteuer (http://www.playmobil.de/on/demandware.store/Sites-DE-Site/de_DE/Product-Show?pid=4446&cgid=Freizeit-Abenteuer)

These sets are announced in the actual catalogue with a release date in may.
I do not know why they released the sets already before the easter holidays..  ???

best,
socrates

Where in the world do Police have such cool stuff (airplanes, hovercrafts, VTOLs, etc)?

I guess PM didn't want to do a theme about cops gliding around on segways...

The two "shadow" boxes in cachalote picture have the rough dimensions 1x4x7 and 1.5x6x8 - do these conform to any of the already known releases?

The 4444 cannon ship would seem a much more likely candidate for one of these two limited edition sets - though the box is much deeper. That may be due to the angle of viewing in the picture, or it may be those boxes are just for the picture and aren't the real boxes.

The 4444 set would fit the tricorne hat theory, though the klicky who wears the tricorne hat in that set doesn't have the same hair as the shadow figure.

Hello, Martin ...  :wave:

There was some speculation that the "shadowy" figure might be Napoleon (http://gardenwargaming.com/howto/Graphic01.html) ... ???

Hopefully, there really is a secret .. ;)
(otherwise, many of us may be a bit disappointed)

All the best,

I guess PM didn't want to do a theme about cops gliding around on segways...

A cop on a segway would make a perfect special/pal/easter egg...  :D  :love:

@Martin+Richard: Well, I suppose most people think, the two police sets 4445 + 4446 are the surprise sets as they are listed in the catalogue as the only two sets to be released in mid-may as a limited edition, which matches the facts listed on the secret-sets-add...
See: http://download.playmobil.com/public/eCS/Store/de/FSICatalog/index.html (http://download.playmobil.com/public/eCS/Store/de/FSICatalog/index.html) (pages 16+17)

But I am more than ever convinced that you all are right and there will be two completely surprising sets in may...

And the dimensions of those two boxes in the catalogue match the measurements I just gave from cachalote's picture, so maybe it was just the shadowy background that was misleading.

on the other hand the flyboat and the hoovercraft were revealed at the same time as the mystery sets were introduced. It would be a bit odd to put up two "mystery" sets and then show them at the same time elsewhere...

Besides; the flyboat and hoovercraft are already available and it's definitly not yet May!

Just my own 0.02 worth ...

::) meanwhile, in the playmobil.de web-page, a "new" set is announced:

Jetzt zugreifen:
Exklusives Angebot: Pirates Hideout
(solange Vorrat reicht)

if you click it - http://www.playmobil.de/on/demandware.store/Sites-DE-Site/de_DE/Link-Product?pid=5782 -  an image of the american 5782 pirates's hideout released lest year appears.

 :hmm: could this be one of the "secrets" announced for middle may.
 :( if this is the case i am terribly disapointed.
 >:(the set already exists on the other side of the atlantic, there is nothing new to it and the "limited edition" announced is nothing more than the selling of a surplus stock.

OTOH the UK site has several new modern vehicles available, plus a car wash and garage sets, and the 4320 Compact RC-Module-Set  for the first time I think. I'm very tempted to get one as I have several RC compatible vehicles.

These were showing on 1st May, and were scheduled for a May release.

 :hmm: after close consideration i decided the 5782 set can't be the secret set announced for mid-may:
- it the german site it appears as a bestell-katalog set - a direct service one if i understand right - without a cardboard box envolving it;  :yup:
- geobra would never let me down in this way, announcing a new special secret set (i think it's the first time they do it) and then present an old one from across the atlantic.  :yup:

i am saying this (particularly the 2nd statement) more to reassure myself than anything else.  ;)

maybe if geobra knows about this anxiety, they will quickly produce at least one pirates' secret special set in time, totally new, just not to disapoint this loyal fan:
 :yup: - one that buys all their pirate sets without hesitation;
 8} - one that loves to pay fortunes for sets made in u.s.a., including shipping costs and custom taxes, only to find out later that the same sets become available in europe;
 ::) - one that defends them against all bad reviews posted in forums;
 0) - one that never complains about defective parts;
 0) - one that never comments on awful color schemes;
 ;D - one that thinks that all their ideas are great and never bothers them with suggestions for new sets;
 0) - one that does not complain about the progressive shortening of parts included in each new set and the progressive growth of the box sizes;
 :-[ - one that didn't even notice the absence of real string in the most recent ships rigging and the absence of real metal in their anchors...

LOL! I've been on holiday in Wales and Dorset much of the last 3 weeks, so I've been visiting Toymaster toyshops and seen a few Lego sets that look remarkably like Playmobil sets, even the composition of the box photograph. e.g. the Policeman on a motorbike. I've got a pic somewhere when I have time to post it.

I've also noticed that some Lego sets boast quicker assembly to allow quicker play with the finished article. Seems to me if you're only going to assemble it once and then keep it for play, Playmobil is the better choice of product.

Ain't that the truth !!!

However, Martin ... if they disappoint Cachalote ...
There are 31 days in this month. So, if there's no announcement from Playmobil by Friday (16th) ...

I know there is a lot of toy rivalry but you might be looking for a long shot here . The Playmobil is not some sort of creative genius . Did they not just look at a real Police Motorcycle and duplicate it ? Then Lego did the same . Both toys look to the real world and imitate it in toy version .

And, if you haven't seen the new "Raiders of the Lost Brick" movie from Lego ...

i am so unhappy with geobra.  :(
i just visited their site and nothing new appears.  :(
this is very sad - it will not turn me into a lego fan but it is really very sad.  :'(
i cannot understand what's the point of announcing a "very secret", "mega-strong", "guaranteed play and action" and then fail to produce it.  ???
maybe geobra is just to confident on their own superiority and think this is not such a big deal but they are wrong - empires fall over seamingly small causes like this one.  :yup:
i wouldn't change the name of this forum yet to "lego-friends" but maybe "playmo-acquainted" could be a good idea right now.  ::)
i just hope geobra can produce some sort of apology over this fiasco - the danish wouldn't hesitate to do so.
  :hmm:

p.s. i am also very unhappy about the absence of a reaction over this matter in the klickywelt forum. maybe they just prefer to ignore and accept every wrong-doing that comes from geobra (not a nice thing to see) or maybe they are just silent due to shock (a better option).

It's good to have honest critics on what you use ...

I have to admit that I've been finding difficult to expect something from Geobra. Not because they couldn't give or make, but because I feel like without voice, I don't know. Maybe I simply behave as a child, in what concerns their production and I get what interests me, and let pass what doesn't ...

I didn't use to be a very demanding child, in a certain view point ... Although I was, all right, very demanding, in person, I think.

I'd like to have more ... honest complaints to make. In a way, I don't have faith in my requests or dreams about Playmobil ... Maybe I still find many things that please me. But then, well, it isn't a difficult thing to please a fellow who has two klicky (and two halfs ... is it halves? ...)

(I had to click a klicky apart, so I have two plus one completely torn apart ;D More will be arriving by the end of the month ... Even so, I'll need much more, and I can't say when I'll may breath. It's a certain anxiety and, at the same time, it's better the way it is than with none at all! Absolutely better!)

Anyway ...

I don't believe it might ever happen, Cachalote, but, well, it could be worse: Pirates could be discontinued ... (like 1900) :-\

I actually don't believe it will ever happen, but, well, it's an enterprise, not a culture factory ... No matter that they did greatly, throughout the years.

To discontinue the Medieval Civillian collection is, in my view, one of the worse actions ever! :'( :'( :'(

Pirates is a collection with great potential. I believe we may see a Spanish colonization collection still, although they're different historic periods ... Even so, Geobra seems to treat them as the same thing.

(@ everyone)

Which makes me remember of something very strange too: have you ever noticed that, in the catalogue, Knights is usually (not to say always ...) AFTER Pirates?! ??? Cloudy heaven!, it's so weird ... :hmm:

I bought a set of the new Indiana Jones Lego! Set 7622 from the "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

Well well, it's years since I bought any Lego, but I'm heading out today to see if I can get one of these Indiana Jones sets. I love the Indiana Jones Movies (I suspect Playmobil's "Jungle Theme" is their nod towards this genre, but more flexible).

Out of interest Richard, what does this set cost in the US? It's up on Lego's UK site for £25, which seems a bit steep to me - maybe they have to charge a lot because of the license?

Everybody seems to be getting a bit carried away and assuming that because it's now 17th May there will be no special surprise from Playmobil.  But surely, "mid-May" is an approximate term, and isn't necessarily just the 15th and 16th, but could be, say, the 14th to 21st.

I'm still waiting,

I can't see how that Pirate set fits into the shape of the silhouette of the secret set.

The only thing that is clear is the hat, and the figure wearing it has to be in the foreground and the tower in the far distance for the height ratio to be correct.

There are no distinct battlement shapes visible and no palm tree protruding out of the shape.

Of course I would still like to see a couple of western sets, so I keep seeing an odd shaped cowboy hat and rockies.  8}

Lego Raiders of the Lost Ark Set 7622 cost me $30.USD (actually $29.99) at K-Mart here in the US Virgin Islands. It's probably a bit cheaper at Target or ToysrUs on the mainland.

However, Hasbro is about to release three Playmobil size Indiana Jones vehicles. They will cost less than $20. USD and they really look great. I've attached the pictures.

I can't see how that Pirate set fits into the shape of the silhouette of the secret set.

The pirate set was the DS special for May, and not the secret set it seems, so it's still "wait and see" as I can't see Playmobil saying there will be something special and then just slipping it out without any publicity.  Maybe there has just been a delay in production.

There is something strange about these two secret May sets. I have tried to email (in German)PLAYMOBIL's German service deparment about these two sets. They answered that they didn't have any secret sets :o

I have just sent a new email to PLAYMOBIL where I have included a picture of the announcement (which can be found on the first page in this thread). Now we have to wait for a new answer ;)
And yes, I know I should have attached the announcement the first time, but I forgot :no:

They are fast in Zirndorf :clap: I have already received an answer to my second email. The new email can't be misunderstood.

They write that the two secret May sets are the 4445 Polizei-Wasserflugzeug und 4446 Ganster-Hovercraft and that it is right that they were planed to be released in May, but they were moved to an earlier date.

Out of interest, in what format did the original "Secret May Sets" announcement appear? Was it a leaflet, email, page on their website, or what?

As far as I can see, the announcement was only available at the back page of a so-called "Fachhändlerkatalog" (which means a catalogue only for the toy shops).

Well, that is a disappointment for some (though not me as I'd worked out whatever it was it wasn't a fire engine!).  I wonder if the release was brought forward because of the release of the very similar Lego police floatplane?

Well, if it wasn't announced to the general public, I don't think the general public (that's us) can be disappointed.

Still, it boosted Lego's sales a bit.

as a member of the general public i am very disappointed ...  :'(
tracking back the whole story, the secret sets were indded announced in a leaflet made for shop-owners.
the problem is that its design does not suit this purpose - it has a very general-public-oriented concept, in its language and in its shape (a leaflet ready to be vertically stored with lots of others).
does geobra really needs to crate this "secret-antecipation" in its seller? i don't think so.  ???
anyhow, they should know that all information leaks and that a shop owner can be as well a collector.
lhapp did the right thing - thank you  :wow: - and asked directly what was happenning.
unfortunately the worst news came - there are no secret sets and geobra just made a mess of this entire subject.  >:(
someone sais, in another thread, that geobra was basically a "regional" short-sighted" view on things - it is true.

Hmmm ... However, that certainly doesn't explain ANYTHING about what we all saw in the silhouette ...  :hmm:

All the best,
Richard

I think people tended to see what they wanted, Richard.   There were fairly firm claims that the flyer indicated pirate sets or western sets, for example.  However, in the foreground are two rectangular boxes which were the real secret sets.

You are much too kind ...  0)

As, Cachalote said, "... they should know that all information leaks and that a shop owner can be as well a collector."

And, it is a well known fact that Zirndorf spies on us all the time. They were well aware of what they had created!

I really have to agree with Cachalote's statement, "Geobra just made a mess of this entire subject."

And, you are quite correct, Martin, "Still, it boosted Lego's sales a bit."

I want to be sure that none of Zirndorf's spies miss your comment:

"(Playmobil's Secret May Sets) boosted Lego's sales a bit." ...  :P

All the best,
Richard (the Lego buyer)

I guess that you are probably correct ... because that really looked like "Napoleon" to me ... :lol:

However, I really feel bad that Zirndorf disappointed so many people. (And, they really can't hide behind, "It wasn't a 'public'  announcement.")

Because any information that is printed and widely distributed is pretty much "public" information.

All the best,
Richard

What if?

What if the person who answered the email from Lars was mistaken?

What if the two sets were indeed Pirate sets?

What if the two sets were marketed together on TV (as shown in the poster and video clip)?

What if the two sets were "Killer Price" and "Limited Quantities" (as shown on the website)?

What if the larger of the two sets had an outline that closely matched the silhouette?

What if one of the pirate figures was in the foreground of the silhouette?

And ...
What if the sets were supposed to be released in Mid-May, but were released earlier for some marketing reason?

WHAT IF ... ???

PS: Click HERE (http://www.playmobil.de/on/demandware.store/Sites-DE-Site/de_DE/Link-Page?cid=TOP08_en) and then scroll down to read about the May release that's also "killer price" and "limited quantity." However it's NOT on TV and it doesn't look like the silhouette!

once again richard: what a mess ...  :(

1. there's no way in no angle that the hat belonging to the 4446 hovercraft driver can be the one "silhouetted" in the "mitte mai" picture.  :no:
2. this picture first appeared in klickywelt in november 2007 as belonging to a shop-owner catalog of novelties for may/july 2008.
3. customizer bought and reviewed a 4444 set in february 2008, much earlier than "mitte mai" or even "april-july".
4. 4444 kanonensegler and 4443 piraten schatzinsel have hardly "killer prices".

... nothing makes sense.  8}

- the pirate sets could match the picture and have a tv add ... but they were released 3 months ahead of schedule and have no killer prices and geobra told lhaap they were not the ones. :hmm:
the hovercraft set has geobra saying it is the secret set and the timing seems almost allright ... but it doesn't match the silhouette in the add, the size of its box is much smaller than the sea-plane and killer price is not what we can call what they cost. :hmm:

on top of all this, both options are classified by geobra in richard's last link as being limited editions (whatever that means) ...
  ???

i wish a reply posted saying "i just love this 2 new pirate sets, they were worth the waiting, what a surprise after all the secrecy" could have made me an official addict instead ...

Don't ask how Fachhandlerkatalog is pronounced in English.

But, seriously, maybe instead of worrying about these daily letdowns we should all meet in Holland at some cafe, tear up our passports, have a few smokes, and see how long it takes for the money to run out.

I think is this:

http://www.playmobil.de/on/demandware.store/Sites-DE-Site/de_DE/Link-Product?pid=5782

Maybe they have some stock problem, and decide not to go to TV, this set is limited 5 per customer.

Excellent detective work, Cachalote !!!

Maybe Zirndorf knows how much you like Playmobil's Pirate Theme, so they decided not to make you wait until mid-May ...  :klickywink:

Well I don't like the skull island (too Fisher Price) but the small sailing boat is FANTASTIC and I hope it sails to our shores eventually. I have one, but I'd like another.

Actually, now that I see the sets, I see why PM was trying to keep it a secret.

Maybe we should cut PM some slack--

They wanted to keep the sets a secret and now we know why.

Maybe this is about respecting PM's personal space.

"Honestly, guys, we're kind of embarrassed and would prefer not to shout it to the whole world.  Ergo: May's secret."

And, Timmy ... if someone were into Games Workshop's Warhammer (http://oz.games-workshop.com/games/warhammer/) using Playmobil Klickys instead of 25mm Citadel figures, the "Skull" might just work fine with the Undead (http://oz.games-workshop.com/games/warhammer/vampirecounts/catalog/skeletons.htm) (from the Vampire Counts (http://oz.games-workshop.com/games/warhammer/vampirecounts/default.htm)) with Playmobil skeletons.
(Somewhat similar to Count Bogro's "Band of Skeletons" (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=1978.0))
