Some of my favourites are my American Indians. I have gathered them into their proper tribes. For instance, I have Apache and Sioux Indians that look like Apache and Sioux Indians!
I have Pacific Northwest Indians with their Totem Poles! I have Sioux Indians with their Teepees, Travois and Buffalo!
But, they all came "mixed up" in different sets and figure configurations. I probably would never want to return them to their original historical mis-configurations. (But, I kept the boxes ... just in case.) ... ;)
All the best,
Richard
Hi Richard,
I saw some of your American Indians in your Old Pictures thread, but I'm such a dunce regarding the whole culture I couldn't tell a Caddo from a Navajo.
Could you post & label some pics of your tribes, explaining a little about how they are differentiated?
I'm getting interested in the Native Americans, and would love to be able to make my tribe(s) look more authentic. I visited the National Museum of the American Indian in July last year in Washington, but didn't have long before closing time, and it would take a week to give the museum the time it deserves. I also saw the totem poles in Seattle, but that was back in 2004 and I don't recall much detail (except they were very tall).
btw, seeing your collection, I realise I have this Playmobil thing completely under control, yes indeedy. I think your storage rooms are bigger than my whole house!

Hello, Martin ...

I'd be happy to take some photos of my Playmobil versions of some of the various North American Indian tribes for you, Martin!
But, you'll have to wait until Spring when we return to our home on Vancouver Island.
In the meantime, I can post a few "teasers" from my collection of Playmobil photos, but it won't be quite the same ... ;)
The first picture shows Playmobil's Travois Set 3872 which is somewhat similar to the picture of a Kiowa dog travois (before the Spanish introduced the horse).
All the best,
Richard

Richard, I'd love to get the First Nations people labeled properly - I had no idea how to do that, or indeed if any of them were identifiable by tribe. In your copious free time, would you make a list of part numbers and tribes or other pertinent indicators? While you're waiting for Spring...

I also "had no idea" that you had a Playmobil "Indian Theme" incorporated into your data base.
As you probably already know, you and Sylvia share a common trait. You are both very responsible hard workers who are fully committed to whatever task you undertake. Therefore, it is impossible for me to refuse either one of you ... ;)
Of course, I'll label the Native Americans and First Nations People by tribe. With your permission, I'll post it here, within this topic, so that all who want to see it can (and make comments) ... before it becomes part of your incredible (and continually growing) Playmobil data base.
All the best,
Richard

Thank you kindly! By the way, you can show all the figures from any theme via a link on the main page, that says,
Who's that Klicky?
* Show Klickies from a theme you choose
It also shows any specials that I've decided :) go with that theme.

Since there are probably more than 500 recognized North American Indian tribes ... You both need to be careful what you wish for ...
And, Playmobil has produced about 30 different North American Indian figures thus far ... :)
I will use the following groups to make it easier for everyone (including me) ... ;)

Within the groups there are specific tribes that are probably best known through literature and cinema. A couple of examples are the Sioux (Plains) and Apache (Southwest).
Hopefully, we will be able to represent some of the best known tribes from each group using our Playmobil Klickys.
All the best,
Richard

Hi Guys,
many thanks to both of you for this! I imagine with 30 or so klickies to represent 500 or more tribes, we may not get all the tribes represented ;) but even an indication of the main groupings would be very interesting, and help create a more accurate portrayal. e.g how do I tell a tribe from the plains from one from the Pacific Northwest, etc.
Lookign forward to your pictures and information Richard, and I'll get my NA klickies photographed for the DB Heather.
cheers, Martin

Wonderful! A lot of them are already photographed (watch for camera icons) but if the photo is less than maybe 500 pixels high, or not good quality, it couldn't hurt to redo it; any printed backs or side views need to be photographed too.
I just realized that there is a relevant figure outside the Indian theme: 30 00 5760 - Native Scout (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-00-5760), appearing only in 3811 - U.S. Cavalry (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3811), so doesn't appear on the "Klickies from the Indian theme" page. I also have to assign Klickies to the Indian DS sets, if they already exist, so we don't miss any.

Hello, Heather ...
I just realized that there is a relevant figure outside the Indian theme:
Don't worry. I'm sure that we'll find them all. For instance ... here are a few more that are "outside" the Indian theme ... ;)

And, since we already have Playmobil Eskimos (and they're a pretty good representation of the tribe) let's check them off our list. They are in the Arctic Tribe Group.

Here's a couple questions for ya, Richard:
Were the head/arms form Special 4592 Caveman used for any Native Americans? If you were to use those pieces(with their red dot pattern) for a tribesman, where would you assign him?
Thanks!

Hi are the results of the Indian work being posted somewhere?

Hello, Timmy ....
Hi are the results of the Indian work being posted somewhere?
I think that the plan was was to just post the results here for Heather to use in her data base and for everyone else to enjoy ... ;)
Fritz sort of got us sidetracked with his question ...

BTW, best guess on this question, so far, are some of the Eastern Tribes, but we're currently working on authenticating this.
All the best,
Richard

AN UPDATE (3 March 2008):
Hello, Playmofriends ...
After looking carefully at all the hairstyles, clothing, etc. of Playmobil's North American Indians, it appears that they really fit into only three of the nine groups:
The largest Playmobil group are the Plains Indians. They were nomadic buffalo hunters who followed the buffalo herds. After the arrival of the European horses, they became very skilled horsemen. The Sioux seem to be the best represented Indians produced by Playmobil.
The second largest Playmobil group are the Southwest Indians. They were farmers and shepherds as well as hunters. The Playmobil figures representing the Southwest Indians look somewhat similar to the Apaches.
The third largest Playmobil group are the Arctic Indians which Playmobil depicted rather well with their Eskimo theme.
The Northwest Coast Indians appear to be really only represented by their Playmobil totem poles.
Unfortunately, I do not have any of my Playmobil Indians with me. However, if someone wants to assemble a typical Playmobil Sioux or Apache, I would be happy to make some suggestions as to which parts to use.
BTW, the politically correct terms for North American Indians, or Amerindians, are now Native Americans for Indians living in the United States and First Nations People for Indians living in Canada.
When I was a kid playing "Cowboys and Indians," there were almost no "Eastern Indians" from India living in Fort Lauderdale. So, when we took turns playing either the "Cowboys" or the "Indians," there was little chance for confusion. Nowadays, it does seem to make more sense to call our native populations by something that's more easily identifiable.
All the best,
Richard

Hi Richard,
I'll give it a go - I need to re-photo my Native Americans for Heather, as my first attempts came out too grainy, and then I'll do some shots of my collection and post them here. If you can advise which bits to chop and change, I'd be happy to have some identifiable tribes.

Here's a really simple "conversion" to get you started ...
Please see attachments
Exchange the wigs between the Playmobil "Sioux" and "Apache" figures and put the headband on the "Apache" figure.
Voila !!! You now have a fairly decent Playmobil Sioux klicky and a fairly decent Playmobil Apache klicky ...
Hope that helps ... :)
All the best,
Richard
