Title: "Forest Folk" sets drawing on vintage children's illustration
Post by: klickyklack on March 03, 2020, 12:04:35
I'm a fan of both the Series 15 Fi?ures grasshopper man (http://animobil.info/figures/text/5d0863aa-figures-1322.html) & Bunny people (http://animobil.info/text/3e258fc-3151.html) & would like to see a wider "forest folk" world for them to sit in, with possibly more animal headed anthropomorphised klickies (sorry tahra!  8} )

(https://live.staticflickr.com/3697/33263248315_3da57056fd_z.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/8725928@N02/33263248315/)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/3863/33134784631_36e97ce4c4_z.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/8725928@N02/33134784631/)

It's been discussed here (https://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=17134.40) how the grasshoppers & bunnys could fit in with already existing items - with flower fairys, the Alpine/Tyrolean theme, animals, plants & flowers, gnomes, & elements from the older sets ( blacksmith (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3370x), water girl (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3372x) ), & I can also see accessories from the Victorian sets fitting in (bonnets, etc).

To me this kind of theme is still one that is timeless & still popular with younger children, & also very nostalgic for parents & older collectors (like myself).

More Fritz Baumgarten work can be seen here (https://www.flickr.com/photos/8725928@N02/albums/72157677547531714), Wiki link about Literature featuring anthropomorphic characters (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Literature_featuring_anthropomorphic_characters) for more inspiration.

I agree. See also LEGO's old Fabuland (https://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?catType=S&catString=153&itemBrand=1000) theme.
The Sylvanian families stuff is great and they and the knockoff companies make some wonderful accessories and buildings that fit Playmobil pretty well. There is clearly a market segment for this sort of thing.

I'm not a fan of the animal-headed Playmobil, but as a child I did LOVE Brambly Hedge (and Barbar, and Wind in the Willows.....), so there could be a market for it

I think this is a good idea.  :bunny:

To me this kind of vintage folky fairy tale aesthetic is always appealing & cute, I imagine it would go down really well with the Asian market (this aesthetic is very popular in Japan & South Korea).    I think there's an overlap between the fairy line & knights/medeival stuff, but that's not really my bag, whereas the more forest folk thing is.

Some things I'd love to see:

More insect people
butterfly people (grasshoppers in different colours with solid colour painted wings)
more grasshopper people inc. grasshopper kids

more gnomes & forest kids/fairys
more mushroom & flower hats
large (oversized) snail led cart or carriage
battery powered lanterns the klickies can hold
a maypole
a "lemonade" stand

I like the idea of the sets being seasonal (we already have that with the bunnies, so why not ones linked to midsummer, halloween, midwinter, the spring equinox) & have the sets be linked to the idea of the animals, gnomes, fairys, etc, as the custodians & carers of the forest & land.

Also maybe tie in more sets with classic fairy tale themes?

We've had a special set with red riding hood & her wolf  (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4562) are there others?

What about donkeyskin, Hansel & Gretl (witch & gingerbread house), Baba Yaga (with chicken/bird feet to go with a Victorian dress), Pinocchio, Snow White & the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella (tricky because of Disney?), The Frog Prince, Jack & the bean stalk, the three billy goats gruff, the pied piper, Goldilocks, Thumbelina, etc.

They did Fairy Tale sets (which annoyingly I didn't buy at the time)

4211 Snow White
4212 Hansel and Gretal
4213 Cinderella

I think their was also a Princess/peasant duo that I've assumed is sort-of meant to be Cinderalla

Ahhh, thanks! I *thought* there was more, but hadn't had time to look for them yet! So, 4211 (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4211), 4212 (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4212) & 4213 (https://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4213).   Er, I'm making another sub-collection rod for my own back here..

I would love all of those.. generelly we love odd critters... Just the bunnies rub us the wrong way..  Maybe they look too detailed next to the klickys? Don't know.

I do love some customs of them more like aliens than "county bunnies" ..

ABSOLUTELY! While I like a lot of the fairies Playmobil already has, this is definitely more up my alley, I love this genre. Some of the fairies, particularly the children, match this. Also, some of the gnomes like those of the blind bags. A whole line would would destroy my savings.

Yeah, I get that about them looking a little strange alongside regular klickys.  The Grasshoppers are delightfully odd too though, so I think they look less odd.

On a slight tangent, the bunnys would lend themselves very well to use with some of the knights stuff if anyone wanted to recreate some of these (https://www.sadanduseless.com/rabbits/)

Those illuminated manuscript rabbits are quite scary, but one of the comments suggested they were a sort of medieval visual humour for Lay People (like the cartoon pages in a tabloid newspaper of today?). I think Terry Gilliam had seen these marginal rabbits when the Python team wrote Holy Grail!

Yes! & the comments are interesting for numerous reasons! (esp for me re. the linguistic, gendered & religious symbolism of hares & rabbits in that time, some of which I knew already) & I agree, Gilliam must have been aware of some of those when working on Holy Grail.

 the drolleries are great right! :D

I'm ALL in for giant snails (I love snails, I had pet snails for a while many moons ago), but if they fight with the knights those knights better watch themselves! (I'm sorry klickies, but I'd have to root for the snails).

(er, I've actually been looking for the 123 snail, because, SNAIL!!)

Oops! Not doing well staying on topic.. must think of more forest folk stuff & stop getting sidetracked by snail battling knights & murderous bunny people.  8} ::)  (seriously though, someone with knights please set some stuff up & take photos!  )

I could try drawing a giant, mountable snail.  >:D

That's right, klickyklack did mention it! http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-67380419885148_2271_434588065 (http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-67380419885148_2271_434588065) Needs some reworking obviously, but it has potential!

 ermahgerd! LOVE IT! I think maybe the drolleries stuff needs it's OWN thread with addtional Bosch style klicky fantasticness in addition to the murderous rabbits/hares, & snail riding/fighting knights.

Janilew that's a great pic! A "medieval illuminations" theme would be awesome.

It appears there's been a considerable sprouting of fresh and peculiar ideas!  I'm late on these developments, but it's extraordinary seeing so many members come together with their contributions. If only your names could be put forward for the creative team at PM! Themes like these would truly set Playmobil apart from other toy manufacturers (just think how many brands have their own variations of the "Special Agents" theme...).

Oh SIR! I have nothing BUT ideas when it comes to playmobil! I have to get around to uploading my pirate/ 18th century themed concept art.

Thank you for sharing these lovely illustrations

You actually used images of books I used to have. I bought them with my pocket money when I was about 12 years old, because I fell in love with the drawings
