I always thought those huge sized PM cannons, the short ones with the giant cannonballs, looked fakey, but it seems they have a historical basis.

Yeah they are surprisingly good at finding prototypes for stuff they want to do. Realistic in siege warfare, not so much on pirate ships.
We had a thread a while back somewhere about things in real life that match Playmobil. I should look that up and add a couple of things I've seen when traveling to Germany.

Yes, they were some in the American civil war.

We use the big berthas for our war fare games, not so much as a realistic artifact. Even though they really existed it just takes up so much room, especially on a pirate boat.
The pictures of the real one always remind me of the game where you have a cup shaped holder with a wooden ball on a string and you try to catch the ball in the cup ....made for a giant

I always liked the big berthas and the specific parts coming with them like for the transport of the cannonballs BUT never liked their cannonballs , they look so fake and ugly and diminished the otherwise nice design of the big berthas..... :hmm: :hmm:

i believe we are talking more of a mortar then of a cannon.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortar_(weapon).
in the 18-19th century there were special gunboats used to carry 1 or 2 of these for special operations.
they were called bomb vessesls.

other cannon-like weapons (with extra diameter mouths) were the carronades, quite usual in both french and british navy.
