Saw a Pirate Ship in a charity shop the other week, I went back on Monday and it was still there so I picked it up for the reasonable sum of £3.25. This is the original crew:

The Pirate's pretty much unchanged just given him a sword sash/belt and a gun, the guy in the jacket was bald and the modern guy originally came with the brown lady's bun he was holding so decided to try some new hairstyles on him after some debating decided he looked good as a bald head. I think he'll make a good rocker with the guy from the mystery series also updated with a new pair of trousers

This is what the ship came with

It needs plenty of parts including a wheel on the bottom, this explains why it seemed slightly unstable

Exploring the ship plenty of work to do but, it's certainly a good upgrade from the little rowing boat.

According to the plans the cabin seems to be missing a table and another part not sure what it is possibly some shelves?

Thanks I only got part way through it, went upstairs to do something else and my card had an error well downloading a couple of extra photos.

So I think the ship's this one http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4424
I've got one or two questions. I know this ships meant to have plastic sails, I've got mixed feelings about this I think it will make it easier to clean it if I want to take photos of it on the pond when it's been restored and seeing as I'll probably end up storing it under my bed for the minute at least it'll probably be easier to disassemble without damaging. However, at some point in the future I would like to get some proper sails for it and possibly replace the cabin and poop deck? with one which is a more natural wood colour although that's not likely to be anytime soon. I've been comparing it to the one I had as a kid:
http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3750
and as far as I can see it's mainly the same parts in different colours, the only real difference I could see for the sails is the parts you attach to the masts which makes me think replacing the sails with fabric sails should be possible but, I'd like to know what you guys think as to whether it'd be possible?
-
It certainly is a work in progress. For starters I would recommend cleaning the ship properly since it seems very dusty. Just looking at it is almost making me sneeze already. :)
I'd go with something else than plastic sails since it looks nicer, I assume all these ships are quite similar so it should be possible to fix it up with parts from other pirateships that use this shape.
This reminds me, maybe I should restore my brother's old pirateship sometimes so I can use it in picture stories. It needs some good sails and some parts may need to be replaced, but that would mean I'd have two large pirate ships for stories. :)
-
Heehee that was fun ;D
Great to see the pirates don't discriminate when it comes to Lego minorities!
-
The plastic rolled up sails have a different mount on the mast. Just change the mount and you could use different sails. Not a big deal. I just don't understand why you would want to change the plastic bright red sails :P

Don't discriminate? He was thrown overboard with that slimy baby

It's probably just initiation. They're pirates. :P
P.S. I just noticed his hairy grey chest ;D
-
That's a great purchase! And the baby hydra
-
Great buy, and yes it's 4424. You can just get the regular masts and sails and they will fit fine. I like the red plastic sails for at port but you want proper ones if you will be taking it out for seagoing photos.
-
A super buy! That's a ship that I don't have - though I bought the others in various incomplete states secondhand, and then ordered lots of parts to remake them the way I wanted. It's great fun.
Mine are always a bit dusty - I have nowhere protective to store them. Some are on the floor of a spare room, and others get the Special Treatment and are on (open) shelves. They are too big (and too many) to be moored elsewhere. But I think that my pirates are not particularly clean folk anyway.
-
That's a good buy. :)
I might be able to help you out with a few spares, depends on whether you want the exact colour matches or whether you just want to make it into a useable ship.
I made my own sails for some of the ships I used in my harbour display (not the striped ones of course!)
(http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac300/skypurr/2014%20Kirkbean%20Playmboil%20Exhibition/HARBOUR11_zpsb4878e5b.jpg) (http://s909.photobucket.com/user/skypurr/media/2014%20Kirkbean%20Playmboil%20Exhibition/HARBOUR11_zpsb4878e5b.jpg.html)
- I used fabric interfacing soaked in cold tea. I may have some material left over and I have patterns of the sails for the old ship if you are interested.
-
Those sails look beautiful, skypurr!
-
Those look very nice indeed! :)

Thanks I forgot to mention that it needs a good dust although as you say it is fairly evident in the photos see if I've got time this weekend to clean it should probably do some work for my course if I'm short on time. I totally agree with you on the sail s my first thought was urh plastic, then I thought from a practical point plastic may be easier. My main thoughts are if I'm taking photos of it in the pond don't know how durable the sails are so hosing pond slime off plastic sails might be easier as might be disassembling the masts and stuff for storage, if I did go for plastic sails it'd probably only be short term.
I reckon you should definately restore your brothers Pirate ship, am I right in remembering you showing us a new Pirate ship a while back? 2 Pirate ships interacting with each other might make for some good photos or even part of a story ;)

Thanks that what I meant to say, I thought it should be fairly easy to interchange parts since it's fairly similar to the earlier ones with proper sails, ah nostalgia dictates proper sails look good ;D

Yes my LEGO Pirate doesn't have any other Pirates friends his own size so he hangs out with the Playmobil Pirates they seem to have accepted him in fact he's been sharing avevntures with them since I got my Pirate Advent Calendar the other year (he provided good company for the kids as well ;)) he may be lacking in size but, he's got plenty of enthusiasm particularly when it comes to warding off Zombie Pirates :captain: :arrr: Oh and yes he has a really nice outfit some great details combined with ever smiling enthusiastic face.
That's a great purchase! And the baby hydra
Thanks glad you like it I like the little Sea Monster or Baby Nessie as I started calling it  it came with the Pirate Advent Calendar the one down side is it doesn't seem to float so couldn't take photos of it in the pond and it's a bit small to present a challenge to a Pirate then it occured to me my Lego Pirate might be a suitable size to ride it :)

Thanks for confirming that, that's great makes sense rolled up sails while in dock sails down when out at sea although suppose you've got to remember to keep them the same colour if you do that otherwise it'd ruin it ;) although guess it depends what conditions are like at sea if you need the sails?

Cool I suppose it's quite good fun custom building them from the parts you find. I don't think I'll have anywhere particularly good to store my ship probably under the bed inside a plastic bag so might get some dust, you make a good point though about the Pirates don't think they're well known for they're ship cleaning habits still probably best not have any of them coughing up old dust ;), it gives me some ideas for photos I can take of them at work cleaning it out.

Thank you very much for the offer that sounds really good and very kind of you :thanks: :)9 and the help is always appreciated, as far as I'm concerned I admire anyone who is skilled enough to make their own sails and yours looks as good as any I've seen on a Playmobil ship.
My main concern is restoring my ship to a usable condition so I'm not to bothered about what the sails look like and I think I'd worry less if they were homemade about them getting ruined as I can always replace them with Playmobil ones or make some new ones later. one of the things I was going to mention was that my friends suggested he could make some sails and masts out of dowel, I'm not sure about the masts think I might buy them but, even if you could just send me a template with the measurements for each sail that would be a great help and indeed a useful resource should I or anyone else ever need to make more sails, by the way what materials did you use for making the sails and where can you purchase them?
Thanks again will try to remember to PM you when I've got more time but, if I don't get round to it please feel free to send me a message as I might be busy doing some work for my Conservation course :)

I'll look in my spares box and see what I've got that might be suitable. May take me a couple of days to get to it!

Cool ship! I'm glad to see that you ended up buying it. It shouldn't be too long before you've got the parts it needs. ;)

Thanks, I think how long it takes to complete it will depend on how much I spend on other stuff, I bought the BBQ guy who came free with the DS order on Monday for £3 and was very tempted by a Jousting set they showed me for £12 (might be able to reduce it to £10) so if I'm tempted to go back for that in a month or two when I've more money the Pirate Ship might have to be on hold, typical timing hey ::)

A jousting set? Which one? I can see how it'd be tempting to go for that instead of looking for ship parts! :)

Yes very tempting mate particularly seeing as I've only got 2 horses (not including the 3 from the Western Cavalry set) and only 1 incomplete tournament knight (the 1990's Swan knight). I'm pretty certain the set's this one although I'm not sure if the barriers are the same

It's a good set, personly I only have the jousting knights but thats really all I needed from it.
Especially the unicorn knight is beautifull in design.

That is a cool set, indeed. :)

Yes it should be a good starter Jousting set I think I'm fairly certain that it had both of the Knights in there I like the green horse the Knight is not a particular favourite but, there's nothing wrong with him either the Unicorn Knight is nice I've already got one of him with the helmet the mystery dwarf and crusader have in gold though I much prefer the helmet he's shown with so if I do buy this set I'll have a spare Unicorn Knight to sell :knight:
