Title: 5588 - Christmas third nativity set
Post by: sunflower on October 25, 2014, 12:16:58
I know Christmas is still two months away but I couldn't wait anymore. I bought myself the new nativity set. I'm in no way dissapointed. It cost me 39,95 euro's. I bought it at a big postorder company (Wehkamp). At this moment they have discounts on all their toys, including Playmobil. But the price is the same as on Playmobil.nl. On other sets the discount up to 35% is more interesting.
Anyway

Here's  the box.

I started with building the stable. One of the reasons for buying this set. You can use it as a stand alone and if all goes well, there will be living some llama's when they arrive in January at my zoo.

The building is not too hard. It is kind of the same system WHY (?) as the Alpine Lodge. Not easy to make variations.

The printing on the inside (wood structure and hay) are stickers. I decided not to use them. Thanks to advice given here.

Another big improvement is that there is no cardboard any more. The backside of the stable and the star are made of plastic.

The star is easily attached to the back of the stable. I really like it.

Thanks for the pics and review! I want to get this set too. The figures are nice, but mostly I want a stable that is not so frail (I have the first nativity set with the fully cardboard stable).

Then the characters in this box. There's five of them.

I really like the shepherd. He's a fresh young man with very nice clothes. I love his bag.
The angel has new wings. At least to me. Her dress is a nice color light yellow.

Mary is a bit serene in blue and white. Her veil matches the babies cloths. She has a sweet face.
I'm not sure about Josephs beard. I think I like the traditional beard better. His clothes are fine to me.

The baby is small and made of solid plastic. His face is a bit crooked. But so where my sons faces when they where newborns. It is realistic.

This is the complete set. The palm tree has a small extension. It is a bit higher and lighter green than normal.
The battery for the lantern is included. It has an orange shine.
The bucket is a bit darker than the old ones.
I love the small goat in beige. The ox and donkey are the same as the last set.

I'm very happy with it!

That was my main reason for buying; having a good stable and this one is! I do have the cardboard one too and it is worn out after seven years of use.

Thanks for reviewing this nice useful set. I try to load up on these type of sets for the useful buildings and klickies. I do wish the building had separate system x connectors at the bottom of the walls so someone could use it with out the baseplate. The back of the building looks unfinished but I guess it is a barn.

A great review, thanks

Oh lovely, I've been looking forward to a review of this set!

I already have a stable like that, from the second nativity scene, but that one doesn't have a barred-up window. Or that lovely brown mug. I can't justify bying a 40 euro set for a window cover and a tiny mug  :(

The baby's face looks quite funny, but I don't know if I'd be happy with that.

Maybe better order the parts through DS? Although the rest is very nice as well.

Now that you mention it, my baby Jesus is probably a misprint? I hadn't thought of that before  :-[
I somehow remember seeing this kind of face before. Feel so stupid now... I guess it is best to return it and get a new one.

I've never tried that before... From what I've read here on the forum, there's a fair amount of calling and faxing involved, right?

If they'd make spare parts available through the official DS website, like they have in Germany, I'd definitely go for that.

Well I assume it's a misprint, but mind you, I've never seen a wrapped up Playmobil baby up close before.
Misprints are a rarity in themselves, of course.  8-)  Maybe you'd miss this one if you sent it back.

A very nice looking set really like the look of the stable building and the pots and bay animals are also nice. The figures are well done like Mary's outfit in blue ad the Shepherd looks really good in that outfit a nice fresh new take on it  :)

I've ordered some broken and missing pieces twice and I think it is very easy. I mailed to Playmobil by using the Contact button on the website, once and they sent me a form through mail. I've printed this and filled out the article numbers and sent it by post to their office in Belgium (Mechelen) You allow them to do a automatic payment for a maximum amount. Within two weeks they send the things you ordered (if still available).
Shipping costs are around 5 euro's if I remember correctly.

I'm afraid you'll get hooked. Any part of a new set you want is within reach now...
I'll soon order some of the new animals from big sets that I don't have yet.

 :(o):

It's thàt easy?!
Oh my... Oh my! Do you know how much the pieces will cost, in advance?

Right, I'll have to start making a list of pieces then.
This is so exciting  :D Thank you for explaining!

No, but maybe you can find out through DS Germany? I've never tried.
I save up a list and if things are broken, you have to include the receipt and the part. Within two years they replace for free.

Thanks for this review. I definitely want this set too. Your pictures and comments are detailed, but I missed one small thingy. Ever since I noticed this set I was wondering what the white vegetables are. Could you shine a light on these ''cornlike' thingies?
Title: Re: 5588 - Christmas third nativity set
Post by: sunflower on October 25, 2014, 18:46:59
I'm afraid not. They are too white to be corn. To me they look like flowers (digitalis), I think those are used in 5353 as a flower. There is a tiny hole in them. Maybe a manna flower? Josef gathers them in the baby bag on one of the pictures on the box.

Thanks for the pictures! No I hope they are not corn, that wouldn't be 'accurate' as far as I know corn is a so called new world crop. They wouldn't have corn in ancient Bethlehem. Still I'm puzzled about what it supposed to be...Joseph gathers it you mention so it's probably some kind of food.

Checked the playmobil site (Germany) the part is called blüte-schachtelhalm. It translates as the flower of horsetail.

Thanks for the review and all the great pics :)

At least THAT stable can be useful.... And such lovely peasants! I ADORE the shepherd.

(btw - the bag shoulder thing goes UNDER the fur neckpiece - you can slide it under easily, and remove it again)

Still on the fence about having a doll instead of a baby...

Thanks for the review. The stable does look good and I would like the lantern some time. I will have to check for it going on clearance after Christmas.

I'd love to get this set too. Great stable aside from the back, nice animals, great clickies and some usefull items too.

Only things I am less fond of is the angel girl's big star on her dress.. if it was just small stars she could have blended in more in historic settings and be used for other roles than being an angel. The big star is also something I wouldnt use.. dont think I'd ever use it as a nativity set.

The newborn baby seems usefull though, for when you need one. The older kids seem more like toddlers after all.

Thank you. This looks even better!
It came out of the box this way. I should have taken a closer look.

Yeah, the giant star is limiting, especially since there aren't that many kids in dresses. I am glad she is a brunette though because I already have quite a collection of blonde angels, and variety is nice.

I actually prefer the second Nativity set as an actual Nativity set. I think I'll take the stable and star from this one and use the figures from the old one. The old wise men are better too.

I love that stable.

Regarding ordering parts:

Do you know how much the pieces will cost, in advance?

I always check prices and availability first.  You can do this at the playmobil.de site - scroll down nearly to the bottom and click on Ersatzteile finden.

The part numbers need to be entered one at a time and without spaces
