Title: Painting klickie chainmail helmet
Post by: bhellman75 on July 01, 2013, 01:07:33
I want to paint one of the chainmail helmets to get the texture of it, but in black.  I want to get black hair in that texture for an ancient Persian scene I want to make.   Can anyone suggest or give me warnings about what would or would not work?

Thanks!

By helmet do you mean the chain mail coif (hair replacement piece) that an helmet would go on to show chainmail under an helmet?

If you want it in black you will have to paint the thing in black (that will be the low shadow areas) and dry-brush (google the technique if you're not familiar with it) a slightly lighter colour for highlights to create depth and show texture.

Then seal it with a top coat because hair pieces are polyethylene so the are flexible and do not break. This type of plastic also ensures paint will not adhere well. A mixture of water and white glue over (it will dry clear) may work the way you need it to.

Again, google painting polyethylene plastic / soft-plastic toy soldiers (as they are made of this type of plastic).

Hope this helps.

Try spraying it with a coat of plastic primer first to help adhesion.  Try it out first on a spare in case it damages the plastic, but I don't think it will.

I too am not sure if this is what you meant.
(for your info, there's a black version of this chainmail hairpiece already)

if you dont play with it...they'll hold forever...when you fit it on, press the top and try not to press the sides

Wesley: I do mean the the chain mail coif; and Cheng, that appears to be the piece.  Do you know which figure(s) come with that style hair piece in black?

Thank you.

You really mean black, not the darkmetal (anthracite) colour?
I bought most Surpise Figures but never saw chainmail-hair in black...  ???
One of the few that I didn't buy and has a helmet that masks the hairpiece was the black alien (Darth Vader-lookalike) Figure from series 2.... So maybe that one?

not too interested in Fi?ures so I searched all 5 series and even series 4 a few times for a 'darth vader' and came up with nothing...Hadoque, you might be right....perhaps I thought it was black all along....I noticed it back then because they were alway silver/light grey

Aliens don't fit the "normal" hairpieces, theirs is different, unfortunately...

I got all the figures and don't recall that in black..

PlaymoDB gives the part number 30 21 8002 for chainmail hairpiece in black. It's found on four klickies in three sets: 4865 (Lion Knights Castle), 4866 (Falcon Knights Castle) and 4869 (Lion Knight's Battering Ram). All three are still on sale so its a safe bet the hairpieces will be available from DS. (It may also be on more recently issued klickies which aren't yet listed on PlaymoDB).

I have the castles 4865 and 4866, and I got the chainmailparts that fit on the klickies' heads in these sets in common anthracite (darkmetal /charcoal) colour (like existing armour and weapons, as Tahra explained), so not in black like other klickies' hairpieces or beards...

Though there are black weapons in some of these Falconknight-sets; I have some black swords (so not darkmetal/anthracite bur definetely black). So I won't exclude these sets might come with black chainmail-hair, but in my own case I got the darkmetal chainmail.

I've got both the charcoal colored chainmail.  I think I have a figure with the chainmail piece that is blonde actually, but I've been having trouble remembering which one.  But I think the hair pieces on Cheng's mods are what I'm looking for... whatever those are.   :hmm:

depending on what you want it to represent (real hair?) like some of our PM knght armour, (both Graham & Hadoque are right) there are gun-metal (I follow Tamiya colour charts) versions, with their own part numbers (breast plates, halberds etc), although I dont have these chainmail hair pieces, I think those I saw in photos must be these 'charcoal' versions.
mine are supposed to be black/black lacquer so I sprayed using Tamiya gloss black.

I'm trying to make a klickie that resembles this image.  The chainmail, I think, has a good texture for it, but it should be black.

Yes you are right, Hadoque, the part I referred to is not actually black as the photo below (borrowed from PlaymoDB- sorry Heather!) shows. The difference between the beard (black) and the chainmail head cover (anthracite/charcoal/dark metal) is clear in this picture.
